Can an Immediate Action Interrupt Damage Allocation?

Rules Questions

You're a 5th level occultist. You've got 10 points in your current Mind Barrier, and have just taken 20 damage. Can you allow your current Mind Barrier to absorb 10 points then reactivate the ability halfway through damage allocation in order to absorb the other 10?

See below for the ability in question.

Mind Barrier (Sp)
As a swift action, you can expend 1 point of mental focus to create a shield of mental energy around you that protects you from harm. The shield prevents a total of 2 points of damage per occultist level you possess.

It lasts until the start of your next turn or until exhausted.

For example, if you are 5th level, the mind barrier protects you from 10 points of damage; if you are hit by an attack that would deal 12 points of damage, the mind barrier is exhausted and you take 2 points of damage. You can activate this ability as an immediate action, but doing so costs 2 points of mental focus instead of 1.

No. There isn't a 'damage allocation phase' or anything like that.

No. You don't have a swift action when it's not your turn, and the ability says nothing about being used as an immediate action.

Doesn't it say right there on the last line?

that seems to be the ability saying it can be done as an immediate action.

But the answer to the OP is no. You can't do it in the middle of damage since damage is all at once.

I tend to agree, but I can't seem to find any rules that say as much. All I've got is "an immediate action can be performed at any time—even if it’s not your turn." The only other sort-of-relevant rule I can find is under the ready action: "If the triggered action is part of another character’s activities, you interrupt the other character."

Like the other guy said, there's no 'damage allocation phase' or anything like that, but I can't seem to find any rules at all regarding the timing of damage. :(

like most have said, you can't activate it once the damage has been rolled. However you CAN activate in response to a confirmed hit/crit since it functions much like the goblin feat roll with it for it's immediate action clause.

Let me be clearer. Let's say it's your turn. You use a swift action to put up your mind barrier. You do something that provokes. The enemy whacks you with an AoO for 20 points. You can't use an immediate action yet, because the rules tell us "Using an immediate action on your turn is the same as using a swift action and counts as your swift action for that turn."

If your turn has ended and you are then attacked, as the others have pointed out, you can use an immediate action but will then NOT have a swift action available when your actual turn arrives.

However, barring some other special ability, you can't activate an immediate action after some damage is applied but before all of it is applied.

EDIT: Remove spurious backslash (how did that get in there ?)

Again, I agree that this is a reasonable ruling, but I can't find any rules text that supports it. That's my trouble. There don't seem to be any rules that describe the timing of damage.

You get hit you take damage. The rules don't make this any clearer because it's clear enough and they don't need to waste space. You don't take 1 damage 46 times for 46 damage you just instantly take 46 damage. So there are no rules saying that when you take damage it's all at once because other interpretations are silly and it's obvious that taking damage is taking that much damage. The game relies on people being able to figure out or accept when pointed out obvious stuff like this.

You don't need a specific rule saying that the damage is applied at once, if you want to do something halfway while it is applied you need a specific rule allowing that.

BTW, the stacking rules alone are enough to stop your idea. You can't stack the same barrier two times, they overlap. If what you want to do was possible you would bypass that rule and be able to stack them.

It's not about the timing of the damage. The application of damage is a single event. There is no rule that will describe it as such because it is implied by the action system. An immediate action can interrupt a spell, but not part of its resolution simply because the action system doesn't include a damage allocation period.
