Dex to Damage

Advice

I'm new to starfinder, just started learning the system. I've read that if you attack with a melee weapon, you will get a bonus to both attack and damage via your str modifier. However if you use a ranged weapon you get a dex bonus on the ranged attack but no bonuses to ranged damage.

Is there anyway a character can add dex to BOTH attack AND damage?

Thanks for any help

No and frankly i think it's a good thing, Dex is already the god stat in Starfinder. Weapons damages scale on level now and adding dexterity on some weapon would completely invalidate strength.

How do weapons scale with level? my azumth laser rifle still shoots the same dmg.

At 3rd level, all classes get Weapon Specialization for free, which adds half their character level(for Small Arms and Operative melee weapons) or their whole character level(for other weapons) to damage.

This thread is from 2018. But to answer the recent post, your individual weapon doesn't scale, but weapons do scale. Eventually you trade your azimuth laser rifle for a corona and then later for a aphelion, etc.

As you level up, you're expected to get on gear conveyor and upgrade your weapons.

Though to be honest, you can go pretty far with some of the low level weapons because things don't scale too much until around 7th level, and then another jump around 10th and then a steady sort of increase.

But also, your level adds to your weapon specialization damage, so that's a direct damage boost dependent on level.

And circling back around to the original question. Ranged weapons absolutely don't need to add a stat to damage. They would totally outclass melee weapons if they did. They already can full attack more often and don't need to get close to the enemy to be used.

If melee weapons didn't have that damage edge it would put them in a more difficult spot.

And the game mechanics basically say no one should use small arms (except operatives) and operatives get trick attack to keep their damage balanced so they don't need to add a stat to their damage.

I was thinking about playing a pistol dancer soldier, but the small arms penalty to weapon specialization really hurts the build.

Honestly, I wish they had made weapon specialization damage scaling work differently.

Something that was dependent on the class (that allowed you to add additional weapon groups) and then Operatives could have been limited to 1/2 level in a way that didn't mean small arms shouldn't be used by anyone but an operative doing trick attack.
