Advice

Hi all

I'm starting a small (2 or 3 player) pathfinder campaign tonight based in Kaer Maga initially with my best mate and his 13yr old daughter.

My history is from playing ADnD from 1st edition up to 3.5. I stopped playing about 7 or 8 years ago so completely missed version 4 and 5 hence I want to stick with Pathfinder.

Bit of advice though, what are the main differences (apart from specific rule changes) between 3.5 and Pathfinder? I'm talking in generic, overall terms so I can try and put those differences acros rather than the campaign feeling like 3.5 in a new world.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Like the others said, you have to attack to fight defensively, but if you go total defense before you move you get the AC bonus (which would make you very hard to hit, barring bad luck).
Your next best bet (since Tumbling is probably not option or you would have mentioned it) is to say something to your beefier friends like, "Draw its attack so I can move safely away" or some other way to tell them to provoke its one AoO (it shouldn't have Combat Reflexes). Hold your action until after theirs if you have to.

I think Pizza Lord is answering a different thread...

The differences between DD3.5 and PF are many and varied, but the general feeling is the same. So I don't think you have to worry about "putting the differences across".

There are a lot of differences in individual feats, skills & spells. For example, PF rolls several DD3.5 feats into one. Polymorph spells and shape changing in general is radically different. Many character classes have additional powers and choices.

Best thing is to start with the core rulebook and pretend like you don't know anything about the game.

This said, somewhere around here there is a file listing the most significant changes. Someone will surely provide a link...

The difference that stuck out at me when I first made the transition was everything/one is cooler, has more options for flavor, and is stronger.

Yeah, sorry about that. Website went to Kobolds tangled in computer wires when I was posting. There's a lot of little rules differences, but I think world-wise, goblins have a huge dislike for dogs or horses, other than goblin-dogs.
Kobolds and gremlins are well-respected as cunning trap-designing mischief-makers.
People aren't so much concerned about being good as they are with tolerating everyone else.

Thanks for the responses.

Ran a quick game tonight, had them working for The Freemen against a rival faction freeing slaves being transported through their territory. We were caught out by the smaller pool of skills for example but essentially everything else was smooth. Moving on to Godsmouth Heresy next as fits in nicely with trying to get influence from the church of Pharasma so might have a little faction war as the start of my campaign.

I did take license with the description of the outer rings of Kaer Maga though. Didn't really have time to research in-depth so when it described about most people living 'within the walls' I went with a similar description to the Stronghold in the Belgariad so the 'streets' were actually more like tunnels cut out through the walls so to speak. My world, my rules :)

Critical hits and sneak attacks work on more creatures in Pathfinder versus D&D 3.5 (The "Sneak Attack" power has a sidebar next to it that details a lot about that over HERE (Scroll down, I couldn't link directly to it.)

Moving during a charge triggers attacks of opportunity.

I know there's a bunch of others but I'm very unfamiliar with D&D. These are two of the things that I remember my group being confused/surprised about when they came up in the game.
Also, you may want to take a look at the Pathfinder Conversion Guide

That's brilliant thanks, have a thief in the party and would of gone with old rules so thanks for pointing that out.
