Anthropomorfic companion?

I have a doubt regarding the spell, Anthropomorphic Animal.
Can an animal under the permanent effect of this spell continue to be a companion for a druid or ranger?
Since the description says, that the animal gains intelligence 3 and can speak a language that the master knows.

I dunno what RAW says, but I let a player's Verminous Hunter do it on his Giant Slug companion, Slurms McKenzie.

The creature is still an animal, not a magical beast or something. There's no issue with it remaining an animal companion.
