Question about the grioth race

What is the inspiration for these creatures? Do they come from some work of fiction or were they inspired by something from folklore?

I can't speak to their exact origins, but it's probably something Lovecraftian (based on the connection to Nyarlathotep.) It might be a bit of a stretch but by the name they might be a reference to a low-powered relative of Groth-Golka.
