Dire Wolf thinks she's a lapdog?

So my party found a litter of pups after killing the mamas. (to be fair they didn't know the b!$!*es were nursing). One of the PCs has a rather soft spot for all critters and in his spare time runs what is pretty much a wildlife rehabilitation sanctuary.

The father was a Mythic Worg.

I'm writing them as Advanced Dire Wolves.

One of them (Rumper) I've decided is convinced she is a lapdog, and doesn't realize that she is the size of a large draft horse.

Now, do you think this is a good idea?

Soon the party will be given these pups, once they're full grown, as traveling mounts.

Also, what would it look like a draft horse sized tail-less dire wolf try to climb into someone's lap look? (Aside from adorable/really funny)

I think some non-lethal crushing damage will be doled out to unsuspecting "pet-owners"

Fairly common for animals to want to cuddle so makes sense for these wolves to want to do so.

here are some ideas you might want to throw once in a while (i actually used them with my Kitsune character but k9 everywhere should be fine with them):
- berrying bones (or other stuff) in awkward places.
- digging OUT bones (or other stuff put in the ground -fallen comrades?) from awkward places.
- coming in from whatever, socked drenched, and then pick the most clean person to shake near to.
- gnaw on shoes\boots (the higher grade-magical the better!).
- bestow slobbering licks.
- (if the players won't get offended) mark their territory.
- leap on people who enter the room (with\without the slobbering licks from above).
- shed hair EVERYWHERE.
- auto hostility to cats\other felines (catfolk etc).
- squirrel attention span. (from "up").
- mail-man (or messenger equivalent) auto targeting..

Vomiting... and eating it
Peeing wherever
Carrying around a half rotted corpse. HIS half rotted corpse!!!
Rolling in a huge refuse/manure pile
Rubbing up against the important nobleman for scritches
Eating ALL available food because hungries
Licking crotch vigorously and noisily - MUST be clean
Fun fighting with a massive warhorse
Taking a sword etc and running away to be chased
Snuggling down with his fave human in the camp, giving the gift of warmth
Eating half a couch at the inn

Even something very heavy sitting on you isn't TOO lethal if the weight is spread out over your body. You'll be fine.

for the above list:
- runs after arrows or bolts other shoot (or other thrown weapons) to bring them back..

Is afraid of thunderstorms and sits on you to make the thunder go away (i woke up with a newfie on my chest like that. I didn't know she could get into my bed...)

never forget, sniffs new folks in very personal places, just to make sure they are "cool" and such. :)

Bonus points to any PC or NPC who does the correct k9 thing and sniffs back...at last, someone with dog manners!

also (and this might take a bit of practice to not miss a role-play chance):

-drops ears and give sad poppy face whenever anyone say "no". no matter what the context is..

"look what you did!".
"all i said is 'no onions in mine'".
"and now you need to apologize to her"

All you need is to 'Reduce Animal' twice and it really is a lap dog.

have you no heart!?

think of the emotinal trauma it would get from everything it knows growing 4 times:
- it's master..its pillow..its fevorate bone and toys......actuly you might got a point there.

Shadow Lodge

Baleful Polymorph would do, if you want a permanent duration. (Also, I don't believe the size reductions would stack.)

An advanced dire wold polymorphed into a (small) dog ends up with a Str 19, Dex 23, Con 19, and AC 18 (+6 Dex, +1 natural, +1 size). Bite drops to d4+4 and loses the trip property. Unfortunately if the pup fails its Will save it'll also go from Wis 16 Cha 14 to Wis 12 Cha 6.

You know that thing they do when you're playing tug of war with them, and they growl, and people who aren't dog ppeople don't get that it's playing?

Now picture that the animal in question is, well, that damn big.

And also, that maybe the thing Puppy wants to tug with is an orc's femur.

They're primarily mounts. Though does give men an idea for a homebrew magic item. "collar of pup shape" or something similar. Great for bringing your Large (or bigger) sized Animal Companion into the city without the guards throwing a hissy fit. (because your elephant is now a tiny baby elephant and DAWWWWWWW!!!!)

Mini-tiger!!!!!!!

on that shrinking discussion... pup shape from UC would work
