Interest Check -- Inquisition of the Silver Flame

Recruitment

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Checking up on interest in playing in an Eberron game set in the Theocracy of Thrane. The players are part of the Inquisition of the Silver Flame and it's their duty to root out heretics and unbelievers. And if they can root out known followers of the Whisperings of the Dark Flame, then so be it.

The game is going to have a heavy religious bent to it. After all, you're playing in Thrane. I've an idea where the players are all followers of the Silver Flame. Whether or not your devout is your own affair, heck you can be a secret follower of the Dark Flame. The Inquisition believes that Heretics are in the land and they must be found out.

So, who thinks this is a good idea?

Map of Thrane

Character Creation guidelines:

Ability Scores: 25 point buy. The PC Inquisitors of the faith should be fine examples of their profession.
Race: All from Eberron are available. Remember humans and others have the chance for dragonmarks, and Eberron specific races don't have dragonmarks. See this page for details.
Class: I hate to admit it, but Inquisitors from the APG have some cool for this campaign (I never liked the class). This is Eberron, so any other class can potentially fit. Clerics should check with me for domains.
Religion: Everyone should be Flamists. That is, members of the Church of the Silver Flame and one of it's sects. Being a follower of the Whisperings of the Dark Flame is possible too.
Alignment: Any good, any neutral, and lawful evil also. Paladins can only be Lawful Good, but the paladin of the Silver Flame has different beliefs than paladins of other faiths. Anti-Paladins can only be lawful evil in this campaign.

Character Backgrounds:

  • Two traits, they can be chosen from Faiths of Purity (even those that follow the Whisperings of the Dark Flame may choose from Faiths of Purity). Player characters may also generate their backgrounds from Ultimate Campaign. I'm very tempted to also allow backgrounds to be generated from Central Casting: Heroes of Legend by Paul Jacquays; to see what colorful backgrounds you can make up.
  • Clerics needing domains should choose from those in the Eberron Campaign Setting. Clerics unsure of their choices can check with me to see what is available in the way of subdomains.
  • Average gold.
  • 1st level. You are all acolytes of the Inquisition.
  • WARNING: Choosing the Whisperings of the Dark Flame as your "church" might mean that you will have few friends. But it also could lead to interesting roleplaying.

Well you've piqued my interest, for sure. I love those kinds of character creation guides, so having an opportunity to possibly collaborate with others on it since it's a focus for you sounds great!

I've never actually played an inquisitor, so this might be a good time to try it out. In particular, the Living Grimoire archetype seems cool to me--whacking enemies with your holy text has a lot of appeal. ;)

And I was about to give up on this because I thought no one would be interested in a game about religion. Actually, it's about the bad side of Religion. The Church of the Silver Flame is a force for good in Eberron, but it's also has its dark side. And I'm showing it through the inquisition of the church.

So one person interested in playing this campaign is a pleasant surprise.

I'd be interested. I'm currently fighting some serious depression, though, so my posting is erratic at the moment.

    Inquisitor (1)

    Avenger Vigilatne (2)
"Returning Weapon (Ex): The vigilante has a signature type of thrown weapon that returns to him. Choose a type of thrown weapon, such as throwing axes. Whenever the vigilante uses that type of weapon, it automatically returns as if it had the returning property. "

If the GM allows it, you can a build focused about throwing books at people.

Could be fun to roll up a dwarven spellbreaker inquisitor.

    Str (16) Dex (14) Con (16) Int (12) Wis (16) Cha (6)

    * Conversion Inquisitor (Wis for all face skills)
    * Stoic Negotiator (+2 bluff +2 Diplomacy)
    * Stern Gaze (+1/2 level for intimidate)
    * Roll twice for will saves against mind affecting effects
    * Glory of Old and Steel Soul (+5 saves against spells and spell like effects)

    So...at lvl 1:

Saves: (5/2/5) and vs spells (10/7/10) roll twice and pick best for most will saves

    Diplomacy/Bluff: +9
    Intimidate: +8
    Sense Motive/Perception: +7
    Knowledge Religion/Arcana/Planes: +5

Hunting down a witch? A rogue magic user? Enemy clerics? Get to laugh in their faces when they cast at you.

Enemy casts charm with casting stat 18. That's DC 15. You get +10 roll twice and pick highest for the save.

Wade through the spells and smash them with a huge hammer...and I think that I'm talking myself into making a character.

    *perk* Daelkyr Half-blood inquisitor?

Would a Warforged Paladin (Temple Champion archetype) work?

They would likely have been mobilised by the church militant to provide support to the inquisition...

    Dark Archive

Sounds like Dark Heresy, I dig it. I would have interest in this.

    Scarab Sages

If I do build an inquisitor for this I think I won't go with the Living Grimoire, after all.

But anyway, EltonJ, have we shown enough interest to merit a recruitment?

It's really close. I'd like to see others before recruiting. But it's really close.

I'd be interested, is there any chance you would be open to Spheres of Might/Spheres of Power from Drop Dead Studios?

I’m not terribly familiar with Eberron as a setting, I’ll admit, but I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of Warforged. I wish Pathfinder had a common constructed race like them. I’d like to hear more, though I know very little about the Church of the Silver Flame.

Nominally interested. Been in a few Eberron PbP's here on the boards. Love inquisitors. I agree it sounds like Dark Heresy stuff. I need to work out whether I can pull the faith off.

Was in a Birthright Campaign I think you ran once Elton?

Yes. That was before my email got hacked by (east) Indians who masqueraded as Microsoft attendants.

The Church of the Silver Flame worships the silver flame in flamekeep. It used to be a demon grappling with a quatl, but then a human stepped in and sacrificed herself by slaying both demon and quatl. The result was the silver flame.

The Church itself is like the Catholic church, monolithic. There are a few sects, two of which can be mentioned is the puritan sect, who is trying to purify the church. And the followers of the Whisperings of the Dark Flame, who listen to the demon trapped in the flame.

As for Warforged, they are currently owned by Wizards of the Coast, lock stock, and barrel. I think paizo is avoiding a lawsuit by not creating warforged or something like them.

Heard of them, not really interested in running a game with their stuff. Looked good, though.

I'm giving this Central Casting: Heroes of Legend book a run...

101: Character Race table (adjusted for Eberron races):
    1 - dwarf
    2 - elf
    3 - gnome
    4 - half-elf
    5 - half-orc
    6 - halfling
    7 - human
    8 - tiefling
    9 - bugbear
    10 - goblin
    11 - hobgoblin
    12 - kobold
    13 - orc
    14 - minotaur
    15 - changeling
    16 - daelkyr half-blood
    17 - empty vessel
    18 - kalashtar
    19 - shifter
    20 - warforged

101: Character Race: 1d20 ⇒ 18 = Kalashtar That Eberron site says adulthood is age 40 for a kalashtar--this character creation book differentiates between childhood and adolescence, so I'm just going to call childhood 1-20 and adolescence 21-40.
    102: Cultural Background: 1d10 ⇒ 8 = Civilized (CuMod=4)
    103: Social Status: 1d100 + 4 ⇒ (99) + 4 = 103 = Nobility
    427a: Type of Hobby: 1d20 ⇒ 3 = Play a musical instrument
    427b: Hobby Proficiency: 1d4 ⇒ 2 +1 (civilized) +2 (nobility)
Rolls to Determine Noble Titles, etc. of Parents:
    758a; Noble Notes: 1d100 ⇒ 26 = Marquis; TiMod 3d10, Special Titles 1d2, Land Holdings 60%, Land Size 1d20+12
    TiMod: 3d10 ⇒ (7, 3, 6) = 16 (TiMod = 16)
    Special Titles: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Chance of Holding Land: 1d100 ⇒ 3 = has land holdings
Land Size: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24 square miles of land possessed by the Noble or at least deeded to him by his liege lord
    871a: Position of Merit: 1d20 ⇒ 19 = Warden of the ...
    871b: Location Locator: 1d20 ⇒ 3 = [no descriptor added]
    871c: The Location: 1d20 ⇒ 13 = Mountains

Spoilering the rest because it's so long...:
Finally done with nobility rolls, returning to 103 to reroll social status...
"Before rerolling the character's Social Status, roll a d100. If the result is 95 or greater, do not add the TiMod when rerolling Social Status."
    Add TiMod?: 1d100 ⇒ 18 = yes
    103: Reroll Social Status with Noble TiMod added: 1d100 + 4 + 16 ⇒ (13) + 4 + 16 = 33 = Poor (SolMod= -1 +5 nobility = 4)
Forgot to go to table 872 to determine relation to ruler of the land...
    872: Relation to Ruler: 1d100 ⇒ 44 = No Relation.
    104: Birth Legitimacy: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15 = Legitimate.
    106: The Family: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21 = None known - Left to fend for self. Change Social Status to Destitute. (SolMod = -3 +5 nobility = 2)
    107: Siblings: 1d20 ⇒ 11 = 1d3+1 siblings
    # of siblings: 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
    sibling #1: 1d20 ⇒ 18 = female
    sibling #2: 1d20 ⇒ 16 = female
    108: Birth Order: 1d20 ⇒ 10 = Second born.
    110: Place of Birth: 1d20 ⇒ 18 = Roll 1d20 on Table 111: Exotic Birth Locations.
111: Exotic Birth Locations: 1d20 ⇒ 1 = (BiMod 5) Roll twice more on this table. Combine the results (and BiMods) together in a workable way.
    111 2nd time: 1d20 ⇒ 13 = (BiMod 2) In the home of friendly non-humans.
    111 3rd time: 1d20 ⇒ 6 = (BiMod 2) In a brothel (this does not necessarily indicate that the character's mother was a prostitute).
    Total BiMod = 9
    112: Unusual Births: 1d100 + 9 ⇒ (39) + 9 = 48 = Nothing unusual occurred.
114: Parents & NPCs: 1d20 ⇒ 18 = Both parents within the household have an occupation.
    423a: Occupation Selection (parent 1): 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 = Lower Class Occupation: select on Table 423B.
    423b: Lower Class Occupations (parent 1): 1d20 ⇒ 19 = Craftsman: select craft on Craft Table 424a.
    424a: Craft Table I (parent 1): 1d20 ⇒ 6 = Baker.
    423a: Occupation Selection (parent 2): 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 = Barbarian Occupation: select on Table 422.
    422a: Barbarian Occupations (parent 2): 1d20 ⇒ 8 = Farmer.
    215: Significant Events of Childhood & Adolescence (1st time-childhood): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14 1d3 more Significant Events occur during this time.
    1d3 ⇒ 3
    215: Childhood Event #1: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13 = A race-specific event occurs (N). The book doesn't have anything for Kalashtar; maybe we can come up with something together.
    Age at Event #1: 1d20 ⇒ 17
    215: Childhood Event #2: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 = Character runs away from home (R). Roll d10 to select events which then occur...
    Age at Event #2: 1d20 ⇒ 18
    215: Childhood Event #3: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 = Character serves a Patron (N). Determine details on Table 543.
    Age at Event #3: 1d20 ⇒ 9
    Childhood Event #2 followup roll: 1d10 ⇒ 5 = ... to a distant land.
543a: Who is the Patron?: 1d10 ⇒ 10 = Reroll. If the result is 10 again, the Patron is a deity, otherwise, use second roll.
    543a reroll: 1d10 ⇒ 2 = A local official. Select on Table 752.
752: Government Officials: 1d20 ⇒ 5 = Sheriff: law and order in a village, shire or county.
543b: Why a Patron?: 1d8 ⇒ 4 = The patron needs all the friends he can get.
543c: What Happened?: 2d8 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3 = Patron is in love with the character (the character may choose this to be only a one-sided affair). Select love events on Table 542. This is during the character's childhood. Because I don't want to go there, this will not be a romantic love--it will be a paternal love.
    542: Ah Love!: 1d20 ⇒ 19 = The beloved is a member of a different race.
Forgot to roll for number of events during patronage: 1d3 ⇒ 3
543c event #2: 2d8 ⇒ (3, 6) = 9 = Patron introduces character to his ward. Character instantly falls in love. Select love events on Table 542.
    # of love events: 1d3 ⇒ 1
542: Ah Love!: 1d20 ⇒ 5 = Character marries his or her beloved.
    543c event #3: 2d8 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6 = Patron has a rival who has threatened the character's life. Select rival on Table 762.
    762a: Who is the Rival?: 1d10 ⇒ 4 = A stranger. Select on Table 750.
    750: Type of Other Person: 1d20 ⇒ 14 = A common soldier.
    762b: Why an Opponent?: 1d10 ⇒ 5 = An insult was perceived.
762c: What Feelings?: 1d10 ⇒ 9 = Deadly: This is a potentially fatal hatred. Severely injuring the patron in any way is the rival's goal. He plots and plans the patron's downfall as a part of his own path to success. Given the chance, the rival will kill the patron.
    215: Significant Events of Childhood & Adolescence (2nd time-adolescence): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22 = Rivals force the character's family to move to a new locale, probably in another country, or face reprisals (N).
    217: Significant Events of Adulthood: 2d20 + 2 ⇒ (2, 13) + 2 = 17 = Something bad happens to the character. Roll a d3 on the subtable below to select the event (D).
Bad Event Subtable: 1d3 ⇒ 1 = A Tragedy Occurs. Determine what happens on Table 528.
528: Tragedies: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 = The village or small town (or portion or large town or city) where the character lives is wiped out.
Did beloved/spouse die in Tragedy?: 1d6 ⇒ 2 = Spouse did not die.
    What caused the destruction?: 1d6 ⇒ 1 = A deadly disease.
    Total up L's, D's, N's, and R's: 0 L's; 1 D; 3 N's; 1 R.
    318a: Personality Trait Check: 1d100 ⇒ 33 = No Personality Trait develops.
    648: Darkside Trait #1 (only): 2d20 ⇒ (5, 5) = 10 = Suspicious: trusts no one.
    318b: Neutral Trait #1: 2d20 ⇒ (16, 11) = 27 = Humorous: appreciates humor and likes to joke.
    318b: Neutral Trait #2: 2d20 ⇒ (9, 5) = 14 = Even-tempered: rarely angry or over joyous.
    318b: Neutral Trait #3: 2d20 ⇒ (9, 14) = 23 = Leader: takes initiative, can take command.
    Forgot to roll earlier for the character's age when the Adolescence Event occurred. 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (9) + 20 = 29

    That's quite a ride.

So we have a kalashtar who was born to nobility, the second born among 3 children total. Despite being a noble family (and having the special title Warden of the Mountains), they were poor. This character was a legitimate child of this noble family, but by some weird circumstances was born in a brothel, specifically noted also to be the home of non-humans. Probably for reasons related to these same bizarre circumstances, the noble family did not keep this child, and left him to fend for himself, and so he grew up destitute. The child was taken in and raised by a couple, one a baker and one a farmer.

When the child was 9 years old, he was taken on by a sheriff who needed all the friends he could get. The sheriff grew to love the child as his own, and after some time, he introduced the character to his ward, a girl close to the character's age. The character fell in love with this girl as they continued to grow up together, and at some point they get married.

At some point a common soldier perceives an insult from the sheriff (the character's patron) and a deadly hostile rivalry results. At one point this soldier threatens the character's life.

At age 17 some kind of kalashtar-specific event occurs (the book has tables to roll on here for elves, dwarves, etc. but doesn't account for Eberron races, so we'll have to come up with something).

At age 18 the character runs from home to a faraway land. At this point the character is still a child (not even an adolescent) by kalashtar reckoning...I'm not sure how to reconcile this yet with the whole bit about marrying the sheriff's ward.

At age 29, rivals force the character and his wife to move to a new locale.

At age 40 (just reached adulthood, and presumably immediately before this game begins), a deadly disease wipes out the town the character is living in, but he and his wife are among the few survivors.

The character is suspicious, humorous, even-tempered, and possessed of leadership qualities. He's neither good-aligned, nor evil. I'm going to say his alignment is Lawful Neutral. Oh! Almost forgot that he knows how to play some musical instrument...

I'm going to stop here--if you do set up a recruitment, I can try to finish fleshing all this out.

Quite a ride isn't it? Central Casting: Heroes of Legend is funny when you read it. It's also controversial, but then again, Jacquays was a product of his time.

I was hoping you ended up with a special skill, like wine tasting. Alas, you can play a musical instrument. Perform skill there.

Anyone else want to give it a go?

Don't know much about the setting aside for Warforged.

Hmm, Church of the Silver Flame, is that the one with the "Loli Pope"?

    What happened to this?

    Not enough interest in it.

That's rather unfortunate. I just saw this for the first time, but if it's still open, I'll make a character.
