Best ways to create item and condition / status cards

1 person marked this as a favorite.

In the past, I've used 3" x 5" hand written index cards to represent items found during an adventure and similar handouts for special conditions.

I've found this helps me as a GM since then I just have characters pass the item cards back to me when they use them. Handing out individual condition/status cards also helps since people aren't trying to share the resource between them.

On the PFS Prep site I've seen where some people have created cards that are the correct size to fit in the CCG sleeves. I find them easier to handle than the index cards.

What is the best way to create something like that? What sort of applications would I need? How tough would it be to create it in something as simple as Google Docs?

As I'm in the middle of preparing to run another special, it would be nice if I could create a set specific to that special. It would help me keep things flowing.

As someone who has done that a bunch, you have two options

The first is Magic Set Editor. It literally creates custom Magic Cards, so they're designed to fit in Magic Card sleeves. This really helps if you want condition cards in different colors or with really nice art, but has the disadvantage that you're using Magic card frames (or card frames from some other game). It's also hard to share with other people since it saves in its own format (and you can't upload that format to PFSPrep.

The other is to open up your favorite word processor and make a table where the cells are 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches. This fits in MtG size sleeves, and can be a bit more flexible since you are just typing stuff in and can fiddle around with placement if you want, but looks more plain. Also, a 3x3 sheet is going to eat into the margins a little bit of a normal 8.5x11 sheet of paper, so printing is a little awkward.

Thanks for the answer.

Magic Set Editor appears to only be available for Windows, so it looks like I get to play with margins and such in order to create the cards. I assume the 2.5” x 3.5” dimensions are the outside. Will a 1/8” border be large enough?

Probably. Honestly I don't worry about the border that much, especially since I cut them out by hand.
