Preservationist - When?

Rules Questions

So looking over Alchemist archetypes. Quick question.

Preservationist gets Summon Nature's Ally on their formula list. But... um when do they do this? Here's the rub I'm having.

Quote:

Bottled Ally I

At 2nd level, a preservationist adds Handle Animal to his list of class skills. He adds summon nature’s ally I to his formula book as a 1st-level extract.

So when do I get Summon Nature Ally? At level 1 when I take it, or at second level?

The ability Bottled Ally I is gained at 2nd level - you gain no benefits before this. Thus you add SNA to your formula book at 2nd level.

There are a few other things written like this, and most would agree that it means you get both handle animal and summon natures ally at lv 2. Otherwise, it opens up a massive can of worms. That isn't to say some disagree, but some also disagree that you can't act while dead.

Necromancy has been a thing since the CRB (sorry, couldn't help myself)

In all seriousness, the summon spells are pretty close to useless at 1st so I might be inclined to rule generously. It looks harmless to give it to them a level early. Text-wise, though, I'd agree that the "at 2nd level" should apply to the entire paragraph.

I agree that in this instance it doesn't seem OP but like I referenced, it is a slippery slope. I can't remember the specifics right now but this came up with a lv 6 ability. If you get this at lv 1, you'd get that as well.

And certainly, you can act while undead, obviously. But excuse me while I go sicken constructs with my will saves.
