Magus Help

Rules Questions

Hi everyone! I have been playing a magus for a few books now and I was wondering if someone could clarify some things for me for spellstrike. So do I have to cast defensively if I am in front of an enemy or can I hold the spell in one hand for a round, move up for 5 feet so I get a full-round action, and then use spellstrike? Or can you just use spellstrike in front of an enemy without having to cast defensively? And after I use spellstrike do I get a free attack afterward without the spell on it? It is confusing a me a bit. If anyone has a visual guide on how this works, I learn better when it comes to these things with visual cues. Thanks Community for the help in advance!

You're still casting the spell, and you still need to cast defensively if you are threatened- it's a common oversight I've seen players make when playing magi.

If you are able to hold the charge of the spell, great. Once a *touch* spell is cast, you can walk around with it all day and not provoke when you attempt to discharge it. It's even better for a magus. Cast the spell, hold the charge, and next round, spell combat. Discharge the spell through spellstrike, finish your full-attack action, then spell combat a 2nd spell at the end of that turn.

During the turn that you cast a touch spell, you get a free action to attempt to discharge it. If you do not attempt to (or you fail to) discharge the spell, on any subsequent rounds you then have to spend a standard action to discharge the spell normally, or you can use spellstrike to deliver the spell through your weapon. If you discharge the spell normally (via an attempt at touching the target with your hand) you must spend a standard action to do so*. If you use spellstrike, you can combine spellstrike with spell combat as a full attack action.

*You can also discharge the spell through an unarmed strike, targeting normal AC instead of touch and dealing unarmed strike damage that way, but that is generally a bad way to do it.

Mini-Guide (actually a thread) for you, specific to Spell Combat and Spellstrike. Then, the more general Magus guide and its discussion thread.

Heh, everytime I see a Magus question pop up I'm like, "Ooo! Quick! Link them to Grick's Guide!".

I guess after several years of doing just that it's the default thought for everyone =D
