Is it possible to get to a demiplane created by someone else?

Liberty's Edge

I was thinking of a lich foe for a short (maybe even one-shot) campaign, and I want its phylactery to be almost, but not quite, impossible to find. I want to hide it on a demiplane created by said lich, but if there is absolutely no way for a party to find it, then I'll have to think of something else.

If the demiplane isn't warded against Divination, magical inquiries could reveal results. Otherwise, perhaps the party could encounter some information about creating demiplanes - in a workshop, maybe.

Very little is truly impossible if your party has access to resources in a good city. ^^ Of course, that's not the same thing as the party thinking of those resources... do you want it to be an answer basically given to them, something with a few hints, or something they're expected to come up with themselves?

The focus component to create it must be the same as the one needed to Plane Shift there. Divination might reveal the form and substance of the key.

Plane Shift

If they know of the planes existence they can just shift there.

Liberty's Edge

It looks as if Discern Location would locate the lich after it has started to reform. I was thinking about a hidden closet full of metal tuning forks.

"Components V, S, F (a forked metal rod attuned to the plane of travel)"

The focus is rather specific. For a personal plane...assuming it's owner has the only one (would they have to make it?). Then it's questing time.

Fair point, I forgot about that requirement.

A counterpoint though, they could research the plane enough to create a fork attuned to the plane (since pathfinder provides no rules on attuning the forked metal rod to a plane).

All you need to do is bind an outsider with a plane shift SLA, since spell-like abilities don't have focus components.

Make it a Psychic Lich with the Sorrow Psychic Discipline? This lets the lich create a private demiplane without a focus, so it's extra hard to get to.

(The most likely way someone would find someone's private demiplane would be to find the focus, find the plans for the focus, find the notes for the plans to the focus, find anybody else consulted, etc. all of which goes away when there literally isn't one.)

The Create Demiplane spells in Ultimate Magic state that other characters cannot enter one without the ability to travel between planes, so yes, it's possible. As has already been pointed out, Plane Shift requires a focus attuned to the desired plane. Most other methods of planar travel require even higher level spells.

He still has to know where he's going.

I want to Plane Shift to random, unknown plane X, because the person I am looking for might be there, is hardly a way to clearly delineate your destination.

This is the problem solved by the tuning fork. It is attuned to only a single plane: that is about as specific as you are going to get.

Nothing says how a fork is attuned, and no price is given. So just create a properly attuned fork.

Or even better, “Assume that focus components of negligible cost are in your spell component pouch.”

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Little do the foolish heroes know...

THE PHYLACTERY WAS THE TUNING FORK THE WHOLE TIME!!!

Maybe have them use a piece of the Lich’s corpse to create the tuning fork. Some Kn:Arcana and a little bit of craft (possibly untrained) and they are able to get there.
