I've got the In the Company of Unicorns book. Looks like a lot of fun, but I felt like that was kind of cheating since the GM said no PC races were allowed. The "In the Company of..." books are basically all about making monsters into PC races.

True, but I think/believe the intent was not to have players take adventurer (or even NPC) classes. the "in the company of X" series of books basically have racial paragon classes which are ways of advancing monsters to 20 while still giving them icon racial features.

I do like my monster species...

@PirateDevon - I'm fine - I'm looking at a Vegepygmy Occultist who uses the equipment of the adventurer who died and thus gave "him" life. I'm not really into spellcasters, so this might be too steep a learning curve. And there's something calling to me just to play a martial, or, as casty as I get, an Inquisitor or Warpriest.

@Vrog - I never get the attraction of the half- concept. I did like Cambions in 1e back in the day, but then I did like all the weird concepts like 'tweens (a ripple of your character like a double), shades (you gained power in shadow etc) and the like. But mostly I think you were making a stab at dragons, and the plethora of half-dragons...

But mostly mostly mostly, this is still an interest check, so I'm holding off on hard ideas. It does seem to be set on Golarion though...

I'm not counting the "company of" books in the "can't be a pc option" rule

Its set on Golarion for convenience. I doubt any Golarion specific features will be critically important.

Blighted fey quickling?

I have an image stuck in my mind... that was in a friend's own world, we met an NPC who was a T-Rex-like thing and was hosting a tea ceremony (you know, japanese thing) with its two katanas set aside on the ground...

So I'm probably going that way. A big whatever. 'Cause a good big'un is always better than a good small'un.

Ya, I was making a crack at half-dragons, mainly because in 3.0 it was the template that got the most love (they were everywhere for a bit, and DMs seemed to love them. I remember an adventure I played where there was a half-dragon T-Rex, a half-dragon blink dog, and a half-dragon human with class levels).

I guess the monster I decide on would depend mainly on one thing: what level of humor are we going for? A flail snail would be silly and fun, a mimic or crystal golem would be serious fun.

edit: Oh man, animated object: chair or animated object: broomstick would be pretty silly as well.

That's a good question, mishima. The stakes (your very survival) would suggest a more serious tone, but humor would certainly not be unwelcome. Unless you went in the Suicide Squad direction then just about anything goes.

Hmm... I'm thinking cave troll. I'm just deciding between smoke, unholy or savant templates.

Can we change the non-bonus feats?

I'd prefer if the feats were left alone. I know they aren't optimal, but I won't be sending optimally crafted undeads after you most of the time and I want there to be some challenge. ;)

Work in Progress intro post for the setting, should give an idea of the tone I'm going for:

Hey everyone! I'm GM Choon, and I've gone insane. Hopefully in a good way but the jury's still out. Thus this recruitment

I am seeking 4-6 players for a VERY homebrew game featuring the less used section of the Pathfinder Library: the Monsters.

The Setting: The world as you know it has ended. All nations anywhere near you have been crushed before an undead horde so powerful even the Whispering Tyrant and the Whispering Way have bent their boney knees. What's left of civilization has holed up far from you and for practical purposes might as well not exist. No one is even thinking about you anyway with the exception of a few exotic zoo keepers. You're the monsters, after all.

And who could be so powerful as to force the de facto ruler of the Whispering Way to heel. They are known only as the Cabal, a shadowy and yet very real organization seemingly bent on the death of... well everything that hasn't experienced it yet. Needless to say, this was met with some resistance.

But that doesn't matter now. What matters is Haven. Or Safety. Or Nexus. Or Glorious Garbage Pile. Or The Great Maze. Or any of the other hundreds of names the hundreds of different monsters call the sanctuary established by the Great Worm Sovereign Dragon named Lungarfiliax. Or the Savior Worm. Or Great Good Lizard That We Must Never Ever Eat. Having so many people with so many cognitive levels and languages has led to a bit of a problem with proper nouns.

Anyway...

All that is left of the monstrous races have retreated to a large, heavily fortified, easily defended enclave on the ocean. Using their ability to cast Wish, Lungarfiliax and his dragon followers have crafted a nearly impregnable fortress. The Cabal soon found this little refuge and basically herded the remaining monsters throughout the entire region into the thing just to see what would happen. To their apparent surprise, everyone settled in and got along. Under the radiant glory that is the golden scales and majestic horns of Lungarfiliax all the myriad beasties actually came together and formed something approaching a coherent fighting force. They then proceeded to dig in like a burned tick.

You are one of them. Herded from your home, your families, tribes, clans, loved ones, etc, you were lucky to make it out before the horde of the Cabal. Sometimes entire clans made it in. Sometimes it was just a few ragged survivors of a once great species. Now, you are fighting for your existence in a bubble of life among the dead.

So question, did Bitey help push you to this madness, or is that a happy coincidence?

Coincidence. I was thinking of this before Bitey.
He certainly didn't help though. :)

We all love Bitey.

The setting definitely sounds enjoyably grimdark. Is the adventure going to focus on venturing outside Haven, or defending it from the undead hordes?

In either case, I'll probably go with a blue wyrmling.

Both, but mostly defence from both internal and external threats.

By monsters, do you mean fleshy beings exclusively or can we build construct PCs as well?

I was intending fleshy bits as constructs don't usually have an int score. Remember, "-" is not "10". Is really hard to RP something with a mental score of "-", and I'd prefer if everyone could at least speak and understand each other. Somehow. As I said, it won't be strictly combat.

*tossing ideas around* Blink Dog or Hound Archon for me. The Occult or Psychic books allow for some flexibility, though Occult may be iffy, given the justified dislike for the undead legions and the likely suspicion with anyone dealing with the undead or things that can be considered such.

That said, if you can find a way to give yourself those mental score and you can write a compelling story around it I won't look down on you for being a construct.

Ummm. I did it.
