@ GM: Which honor code will the village be holding? Or can we have any honor code as long as the acts benefit the village?

Example: Criminal Code gives +1 for stealing a valuable treasure. As long as it was stolen from others for the Clan, would it be counted as honorable to them?

I love using the honor system, though. Adds a level of realism to the game.

I'm thinking about an Oracle with Wrecking Mysticism curse for swapping spells for tails.

So a question: Does the Kitsune Magic trait count as one tail, i.e the first level character already has one tail if they didn't swap the trait for something else. Or it doesn't count, and we can take Magical Tail at first level?

That is a good point, as all Kitsune start with a tail AND race Magic.

The feat Magic Tail adds to this with up to 8 more tails, making 9 in all.

I have put a cap of 1 tail per level up to level 9, for in house game logic.

You your 1st tail counts as magic, the if you take feats or traits, you can take 1 more for levels 2 and 3 hitting a max tails of 3 at 3ed level.

10 min background:
Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character. These can be a concept overview, a list of important life events, a physical description, a personality profile...whatever you need to get an image in your mind. 5 is just a minimum...more elements are encouraged!

[Example: Martin Tenbones]
1) He is a former pirate and retired adventurer and now owns a tavern in the city of St. Clarice.
2) He is outgoing and charismatic, and attempts to keep abreast of all the local gossip and juicy secrets that pass his way, because he believes that knowledge is power.
3) He and his former adventuring band fought against the forces of the pirate captain Craven, who was a major lieutenant for the current Dread Pirate Hellbeard. He used the wealth that he acquired to build his tavern, but he sometimes worries that the pirates may one day decide to find him and extract revenge.
4) Though he is still friends with most of his former adventuring mates, some of them parted the group on bad terms. His girlfriend went back to the sea to fight pirates once more, but he received word that her vessel was taken by Hellbeard and believes she was killed. He mourns her death.
5) Although he is retired, he can be convinced to adventure again if he hears that Sasha (his lost love) may still be alive, or if he is contacted by the White Foxes during a crisis (see secrets).

Step 2: List at least two goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course of the game.

[Example]
1) I would like to see Martin reunited with his lost love and perhaps able to mend fences with some of his former adventuring buddies over the course of this campaign.
2) It would be cool to have Martin face and possibly defeat the Dread Pirate Hellbeard once and for all.

Step 3: List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character. I will also be creating a third secret which you as a player will not be aware of, so expect some surprises!

[Example]
1) Martin is a member of the White Fox Society, a secret society dedicated to keeping Coralton free of tyranny and evil, as well as keeping local governments honest. He provides information and rumors to them, but can be convinced to take a more active roll if pressed.
2) Sasha LeBell, Marin's lost love, is still alive. She was captured by the Dread Pirate Hellbeard and has been kept as his captive for all these years.
3) (Example of a secret I might make up about your character): Not only is Sasha alive, but also she has escaped captivity and killed Hellbeard. She has taken over his ship and crew, and has turned to piracy out of bitterness. She now IS the new Dread Pirate Hellbeard!

Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile. If you like, you can include an enemy of yours here as well, so I have an instant NPC nemesis to throw at you.

[Example]
1) Martin's friend Audric Cwellen was one of his adventuring mate. Audric, a holy warrior in the service of the Goddess of Love, is the leader of the local cell of the White Fox society, and provides Martin with information and adventure hooks.
2) Another of Martin's old traveling companions, Aubrey LeVaine, is not as helpful as Audric, because they quarreled over the love of Sasha, and Aubrey is still bitter about losing her to Martin. Still, he can provide some magical support if Martin can convince him to let go of his hate.
3) Yebin Thistledown is a strange little creature from the Feywild called a gnome. Martin met the gnome in the Shroudmist Forest and saved him from a pack of Howlers. The Gnome makes all sorts of alchemical items and gadgets, and loves collecting odd souvenirs and items, as well as "recreational herbs." He operates a bizarre patchwork shop in the Rue Angélique district.

Step 5: Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.

[Example]
1) Martin remembers growing up in a tavern as a young boy, helping his mother with the cooking. This started his own interest in the culinary arts.
2) Martin remembers the panic he felt when he discovered that the ship he signed on to was a pirate ship after a brutal attack on a merchantman. He vividly recalls the smell of blood and burning timbers.
3) Martin often recalls the goodbye kiss he gave Sasha when she left him. No kiss he's had since ever compares to that memory.
[design notes for the example character] Martin began life as an atypical barkeep. He was a retired adventurer, but still young and vigorous enough to accompany the party on their adventures. His tavern became the party's base for a while, until the BBEG of the game let off a necromantic bomb that killed most of the townsfolk and turned the town into a Zombie Apocalypse nightmare. Martin survived, and he turned into a secondary character for one of the players as he became more important to the ongoing storyline. Most of his background came from this transition from NPC to part-time PC. After the campaign reboot, Martin returned to his role as the barkeep of the party's favorite hang-out, but the players like him enough that he might return to adventuring status in the future.

I want to see your 10 min background to make the best Fit of PCs into a group.
Work on the idea that your guns for hirer, the Fox clan village back home is kept going buy the work YOU do. The Fox Clan Village, You could have been born there OR made your way there by underground tails of a hidden village of Kitsune, skilled in the arts of deception and spy craft. You may want to just learn or you may want to stay, thats up to you. The idea is this lets you have a "other place" starting point while still part of the clan, as well as a drive to be part of the clan.
Or start as someone linked deeply with the Fox Clan who sees it has home.

That should even things out, not your STILL level 3 and you will need to ROLL HP for 2-3 levels.
Max at 1st. If you have rolled your HP keep it.

This can give a player 18/18/18/10/10/8 as a starting point, if your into Min/Max-ing and so after race Adjustments you can have 20/20/18/10/10/6 min/max.

Players are free to do this, but I want to know WHY! your PC is so ugly / weak / sick / dumb / slow / unwise etc. Back story is all.

Step 1:
1. Morgana Darkmoon's fur is the darkest color of black with tiny specks of shining silver hairs all over her body, giving her the appearance of being a night sky scattered with stars.
2. These markings are the same in both kitsune and fox forms, and in human form, she has freckles that cover the same places. Those familiar with astrology would recognize Desna's constellation across her chest, among many other across her body.
3. She's more interested with exploring her powers and abilities than she is professing any faith. Her oracle's abilities are a part of her regardless of faith, so she's taking it as her personal journey rather than at the behest of the goddess who marked her.
4. She's impulsive, and vain, and loves dressing with fine jewelry and clothing. She is not aware that some of her compulsions are related to her oracle curse.
5. Morgana is a name she adopted when she was a child. All she knows is that she's from the Darkmoon family of kitsune. There is evidence her parents were killed by some kind of magical disaster that left many kitsune dead.

Step 2:
1. Morgana Wants to become well respected and have a position of social power. Such as true nobility or an owner of a vast household or large swathe of land. (Countess, duchess, etc.)
2. I want Morgana to grow as a person, gain emotional maturity, and perhaps even gain a little bit of humility.

Step 3:
1. Morgana remembers what happened to her family, but has suppressed it so far deep in her mind, that she claims that she has no memory of what happened, and without serious psychological/magical aid, would not (and refuses to) rememer it. Her mother had become possessed by an Oni and became a Nogitsune, and her father died putting her down...
2. Mitsuo Silverfang (see below) actually knows everything that happened that night the Darkmoon family was nearly wiped out. As one of the responders to the calamity, he was the one who wounded the Nogitsune enough that her father could finish it. Morgana's father told Mitsuo what had happened with his dying breath, begging him to keep it a secret or else dishonor his family so badly they'd have been exiled.

Step 4:
Mitsuo Silverfang (Positive): An older Kitsune swashbuckler, the head of the Silverfang family and possessor of the silverfang, a magical rapier that is the namesake. He toook to watching over her after her parents 'died'. A person of some import, he hasn't had time or attention recently to monitor her actions.
Basri (Neutral): A younger male who believes that Morgana was up to no good, based off of the rivalry the families had.
Ulrathus (Negative): An oni spirit, one that's determined to ruin anyone bearing the Darkmoon family name. Morgana does not know of it's continued existence.

Step 5:
1. Morgana's general demeanor is that of a noble. She comports herself in the manner to which she desires to be. She hopes that she's practiced at acting like someone of power when she finally attains power.
2. Morgana does not enjoy hiding her Kitsune nature at all, and will go in her true form at all times unless it's expressly detrimental to do so. She does enjoy her fox form expressly for being cute and as an option to get enough to eat or a safe place to sleep.
3. She really loves shiny jewelry, especially anything made out of jade. She has memories of her mother wearing such bits and it makes her feel like she has a connection to her mother, whom she doesn't remember very well.

I've always wanted to do a kitsune dragon disciple, so I'll give that a go.

I was thinking of playing a young Barbarian Kitsune from a remote hunting clan on a mountain that keeps to themselves. Like our Amish, they send their young out for a rumspringa before they make their choice to become a permanent part of the community or whether they join the world at large. He stumbles on Fox Village and finds it very much like home, yet more modern and fun, and decides to stick around. At 6th move into dragon disciple. I need to come up with the 10 minute write-up (though it never, ever, takes only 10 minutes for me) but that is the foundation of the character.

Mmm a question that just occured to me: We're granted the Fox Shape when we reach 3rd level. What if we had it from before? Do we get something in return?


`I don't think you can, by any other means at 3ed.

Oh, very interested in this... though it seems like a whole lot of people already are. XD I'll see if I can come up with a competitive submission over the next week or so.

Would it be possible to make a campaign for this recruitment and put all of the character creation/setting information scattered across the thread in it? Just from skimming I see something about an honor system and a second post with an alternate point buy method, but I'm guessing I missed some things.

Ok, this happens once in awhile-and I should have braved rolling in the first place-but something is not connecting. If you rolled, and do not like your outcome, you may take the 1 to 1 22 point buy. But if you *DERPED it-like me-you are stuck with the 21 point scaled buy?


Well, there's no reason not to roll now, so I'd suggest you to roll. Then you change it to 22/1-1 if you want.


Well, apart from my 3rd level feat (which will be chosen when the GM resolves my doubt about the Fox Shape feat) and some minor money spending, I can say Saino is finished.

I will make an alias for Inari (the eidolon) if selected, if you don't mind (he will be a fox, so you know, quadruped, bite, claws, etc).

If you get Fox From as part of your class you can take another Feat in its place.

As long as you have the perquisites.

As for the Stat change, yes feel free to redo your PC with new stat buy OR roll.


I'm thinking of playing a kitsune hunter... who was raised by Deinonychuses. :D So basically Mowgli, if Mowgli was a magic fox-person raised by pack-hunting dinosaurs.

Hopefully I'll have time to put him together tonight.

Well, I've created a profile for my kitsune hunter, but ran out of time to do the 10-minute background before my bedtime. So expect that tomorrow!


Okay, Tsume now has a ten-minute background (that I spent much more than ten minutes on). Is a prose background also desired? Otherwise I think he's done.

Hi all,
I have just been given a work assignment that will start on the 25th and last 3 to 4 weeks. This means a lot of travel and long hours, while living out a hotel.

I said I would end recruitment on the 15th which is still on. But they game itself may not start until later next mouth, once I get back.

I just wanted to let you know what is going on.

I could make something happen with these rolls.

Thinking: Enchanter (i know, i know but,... meh why not try it?), a Wood elementalist, Sorcerer, or a occult caster of some kind.


Ok, I’ve started a character concept that I’m falling in love with.
and this is the result so far. It uses venerable age modifiers, so it’s a very old Kitsune woman, and one stat definitely drops below 8. But, should make for a very survivable cleric capable of popping in and out with buffs and heals. If it’s out of the question, then I’ll stop developing the build and won’t bother writing out the back story (a promising young student, who is struck by a terrible “accident” which affects her vision and ruins her dream of becoming a master monk. She despairs and essentially ends up becoming a beggar for the rest of her life...until an odd cleric mentions that the gods certainly played a trick on her. A...trick? Ahaha! She cackles maybe a little too enthusiastically, and agrees, and reinvents her remaining life by becoming a cleric of a trickster deity not evil)
Eh? Tell me that the flavor and roleplaying potential isn’t worth allowing a stat below 8.

Edit: Hitpoint rolls: 1d8 + 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (5) + (5) + 8 = 18
