Caster level assistance

Rules Questions

Could someone explain to me what benefit a feat like Spell Specialization would have on the spell Chains of Light? I don't believe I understand how caster level works. I have an idea which is a level 5 wizard who had +1 caster level via Varisiam Tattoo could cast a fireball that is 6D6. Also the duration of certain spells could be longer due to caster level. Are there other things as well? Thanks all.

The range of most spells, chains of light included, are based on caster level. A higher caster level also makes spells harder to dispel. It also means it is easier to get through the targets spell resistance. A higher caster level would also make your concentration checks (if any are needed) easier.

Jeraa is correct. Don't overthink it, just treat spells that cast as a level higher as if the character was a level higher. If you were a 10th level wizard casting a fireball, it would do 10d6. If you cast all spells with the fire descriptor at one level higher, you cast the fireball as if you were 11th level. This would extend your range, help you overcome SR, but the 10d6 cap would still make the damage 10d6. Just like any other 11th level caster! But if you had an Intensified Fireball, you would get an 11d6 fireball - just like any 11th level caster with the same meta magic feat fireball would.

Ohh, would it be worth it on a spell like Chains of Light?

Probably not.

It'll make it easier to overcome spell resistance like spell penetration feat, be 5ft longer, and last 2 rounds longer.

Usually increasing the caster level is more worth it for things that have effects that scale off of caster level. Like shooting a an extra ray or doing more damage die or something like that.

Thanks for the help!
