In my campaign it's possible the PCs may go up against some unfriendly armies. I'd like to use the troop template but don't understand how to use it. I've read some threads on how to use the template but still don't get it. I think I'm supposed to start with what I want the CR of each individual troop unit to be, but I don't understand what to do from there. Can someone hold my hand through this process? Here's what I'd like to start out with:
x3 CR 10 melee-type troops
x3 CR 10 ranged-type troops
The troops would be composed of human soldiers with each soldier being a level 3 or so warrior.
Any help is much appreciated!

As far as I know, there isn’t really a troop template per se.
There’s a troop subtype, but making a troop is a little more complicated than simply slapping that onto a creature. You’re essentially creating a new monster, so you should follow the steps described here: LINK
My advice would be to instead use some of the existing troops.
Here’s a CR 10 troop of imperial archers that would work as your ranged-type troop: LINK
For the melee-type, there’s a CR 9 troop of imperial soldiers: LINK, or a CR 11 imperial phalanx LINK
There are also some hobgoblin troops in the Ironfang Invasion adventure path, which you can easily reskin as human warrior troops. Not sure if those are available online anywhere yet.
If you do decide to make your own troop, use the troops I linked to above and the ones from Bestiary 6 as a guide or a measuring stick to get a feel for how much damage your troop should do, what sorts of abilities it might have, etc.
