Whats more useful for a magus,Iron Will or Combat Casting?

Pathfinder RPG General Discussion

Silver Crusade

So we got to the point in the carrion crown campaign where we were suppose to go to the mansion right?

We decided to go in through the balcony, not knowing the developers planned ahead for anyone not going through the front door, monsters pop up and blah blah blah. Then suddenly i get possessed, the one with the weakest will save. (We had a paladin and an oracle with steadfast Personality)

Thankfully it was dispelled before any lasting damage was done, but it REALLY spooked me. So i considered swapping combat casting for iron will, and the dm approved of it if i chose to do as such, but one of my party member is saying i just got real unlucky.

So which is over all more useful? As i know i can boost my con saves in some way, but i NEED better will saves.

At some point you will want to re-train combat casting anyway because you cannot fail a concentration check for any spell you intend to cast in combat.

i've always found combat casting to be overrated anyway as its super situational and doesn't really give much of a boost in that situation much like mobility or critical focus

To be fair, Lady-J, a magus is a caster that expects to be casting in combat rather frequently. It's just that the need is gone by 12th level, likely much sooner with traits and/or racial abilities, since the magus is only a 6th level caster. A sword binder wizard may need it, but not a magus, not typically at least.

As far as iron will goes, do you really want a dominated magus running around slaughtering the rest of your party? Just sayin...

Shadow Lodge

It might be a bit late, but there are a couple traits(I think, I know there is at least one) that give just a straight +2 to Concentration checks. It's not a +4 but it is also not just for casting defensively.

Silver Crusade

guess i made the right call then, iron will it is.

Likely. My last magus was an elf with focused mind (trait). I maxed INT (20 to start, DEX build). At 8th level (still 3rd level spells), with a +2 headband (a 24 INT, for +7), and improved spell combat (+2) that's a +21 check - I couldn't fail a defensive casting check ever again. My GM let me retrain CC.
