Negasonic Teenage Warhead as a Disney princess is okay but I'd prefer Emma Frost as one. ;)

Generally speaking, those villains either have to regularly fail against their antagonists, or could use there abilities a bit more efficiently without the bloodshed and tyranny to accomplish their gains.

Yeah, villains gotta lose. Darkseid never gets to use the Anti-Life Equation to take over Earth. Thanos gets infinite power from the Infinity Stones, and then fails, again. Everybody fails in the end, Kang, Mordru, Apocalypse, Starro the Conqueror...

It's particularly galling when dealing with characters that, off-screen, have histories of winning. Galactus has eaten thousands of planets. Except Earth. He's been kicked off Earth multiple times, napkin around his neck, fork in hand. Trigon has supposedly conquered countless *universes,* and yet, again, some teenaged Earth super-heroes are too much for him to handle.

They show up all memetic badass, and then fail to deliver.

Dr. Doom at least still owns his own country (last I heard, anyway), which is more than Dormammu can claim, having been kicked off the throne by his sister Umar, and then his niece Clea, or Annihilus, who was the big dog (er, big bug?) in the Negative Zone, until Blastaar overthrew his buggy butt.

I mean really if the villains won Its usually the end of the story. well everything is destroyed or everything is boring cause no more conflict. It really leaves you at a dead end. Unless you flip the villain to the good guy (which happens).

Now that is the kind of Disney princess I can get behind... that was not meant as an innuendo but I'm gonna let it stand.

Of course it is a problem with bad guys winning. However, there is also the matter of psychology here. A villain with a warrior's perspective (something like "I lost this time, but I will have future possibilities to reach my goal") can remain impressive despite losing. Someone who is relevant because of his gargantuan ego, however, becomes laughable with failure. Such as Doom.

Doom does not have failures. Doom has setbacks! Doom Has had many long lasting victories as well. That !@#$ Richards is dooms only worthy adversary.

Yidhra wonders what Doom will do when Doom realizes Spider-Man might actually be a worthy contender if given a decent lab and some time free from other responsibilities. o wo After all, life would be boring for Doom if Doom did not have people to one-up, right?

Oh please. Spiderman poses no more threat to Doom then one of the creature's his name is derived from.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

No but the problem with Doom is his ego gets him every time. Every. Single. Time.

There are instances where the bad guys win. In the Infinity Gauntlet mini-series, Thanos became Eternity after defeating him... which set up Nebula to steal the artifact from him and allowed Adam Warlock to eventually claim the gauntlet for himself. Doctor Doom in the Emperor Doom graphic novel conquered the world using the Purple Man, but became bored after solving the world's problems. I'm sure there are others, but that's just off the top of my head and I haven't read comics in over a decade.

IT does happen but that pretty well ends the story. Theirs not much you can go to after that. mostly amounts to one shots.

Ms. green was a fluke. A simple miscalculation. Doom simply underestimated ms. green and mind you Doom was not the only one to do so!

If people keep “miscalculating” then it’s not a fluke.

Who would you guys choose to play doom?

I’ve been chewing on this one.

How about Jason Isaacs? Either in the suit, or voice only.

He does good accent work, and he can definitely pull off the ‘arrogant aristocrat oozing with malevolence’ bit.

Well crap

I was just reading an article that said, even if Disney gets Fox, they don't get Fantastic Four

The actual production rights apparently belong to some german company called Constantin Films who have been working with Fox to make them.

Sounds very complicated...although I thought there was a reversion thing going on as well; If studio x doesn't release a move in a given set of time, the rights revert back.

If Fox under new ownership just refuses to do more, said rights owners would have to search around for a new partner, which takes time.

I find it strange that people find Doom impressive. He is the epitome of undeserved imperiousness. He fails at all his plans, despite massive resources and high technology. The only ones he manages to terrorize are the poor farmers in Latveria.

He has at least twice conquered the entire world and then found it boring to not have any more challenges so erased people's memories and reset everything. So at least some of that is by choice. Plus, he gets more serious exercise doing a bunch of Doctor Strange-type fighting off high-end mystical threats than toying with superheroes.

The thing any workable film version of Doom would have to get right, for me, is making his facial scarring one small nick on his cheek. It's crucial to the guy's character that the scar is absolutely trivial but he has ego enough to go all Phantom of the Opera about it.

I absolutely cannot read that on my phone - the ads are too obnoxious and everything I touch tries to redirect me. Ugh.

sorry

Well, my understanding is that they're harder to find and use on phones than they are on desktops...

Shadow Lodge Contributor, RPG Superstar 2010 Top 8

They might not be able to find a new partner, legally speaking.

As I understand it, if Fox owns the distribution rights, they can essentially shut Constantin out of making any profit on Fantastic Four movies. Oh, sure, they can make them, but with no distribution deal, any films they produce are stuck sitting on a shelf collecting dust until Fox (or Disney) decides to play nice.

Yeah adblock technology for phones is not really here yet. Especially not the way it is for desktop browsers.

I think Gottfried should voice Doom.

Since we no longer have Alan Rickman, I think I can live with Jason Isaacs. He was pure, over-the-top *evil* in "The Patriot."

HE wasn't too bad in Event Horizon either. ;)

Sounds like it's done and will be announced on Thursday or Friday. The deal is said to be worth $68 billion. Disney will acquire all of 20th Century Fox's film and TV brands and some of its sports and news output (including Sky in the UK).

Annoyingly, the Murdochs will still be involved. It sounds like James Murdoch will be involved in the new mega-corporation, although Rupert will be out of the picture (sounds like he's doing a Bernie Ecclestone and finally retiring, a decade or two after he should have done).

Wert,

I'll wait until CNBC or someone mention it but unsurprised the Murdochs keep the news stuff.

We're cool - nothing to be sorry about.

I mention mostly for those who are checking things on phones. (I was not being figurative, or talking about emotionally upsetting anything).

As for adblockers:

-1) I'm actually okay with advertisement - it's annoying, but it pays the bills for others, so, eh, I can live with it (also, if adblocker does pay, as well, that's likely because you're paying something - not a thing I'm in a financial position to really do)

-2) in this case, I'm being literal - I literally couldn't read the article, because of all the adds that covered the screen and made my phone flip out

-3) such services seem more difficult to find for phones

Such is the way of things. :)

So rumors are still out there but if BBC is correct, we should hear the announcement some time tomorrow.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Here is an article that discusses the complicated and arcane ownership of Fantastic Four film rights.

Summary: They think that Fox owns distribution rights and Constantin Film owns the rights to produce. This could mean that Disney would own the distribution rights after the deal. Also, Constantin is shopping its movie/tv rights in order to focus on sports, so maybe they will be up for sale.

Disney owns Fox, what characters can be added to the Disney Princess line?

In serious answer: probably none.

While the core three "rules" for becoming a Princess are likely suitably reachable for many of the properties they've acquired*, the hidden "fourth rule" is one that none of them have: make a suitable profit (but not TOO MUCH of a profit as to outshine all the others; this one is why Anna and Elsa are not Disney Princesses but rather have their own separate line).

Since none of Fox's potential Princess candidates have made DISNEY any money (yet) with their films, none of them are candidates.

That of course may change in the future if/when Disney does use them in animated films of their own... but at that point, it's basically more like a Disney version of the character rather than the character form the original Fox-owned film.

** spoiler omitted **

Yeah, Disney is very particular over their 'Princess line' and it's VERY exclusive. Right now, Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Tiana, Rapunzel, and Merida are the only ones in the club.

Leia is not one of the Disney Princess'... Anna and Elsa aren't even in the Disney Princess' line.

I don't ever see anything that didn't originate at Disney EVER getting into the club... No Leia, No Buffy... certainly No Deadpool...

YES! They got the Fantastic Four

Official statment

Quote:
“The agreement also provides Disney with the opportunity to reunite the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool with the Marvel family under one roof and create richer, more complex worlds of inter-related characters and stories that audiences have shown they love.”

Also I gather this smooths out some issues with redistributing the original Star Wars trilogy
