Here is a link to an article about 22 guns that won the west.. I think it will be useful to the discussion.

Nice article Chobo, Now to add to the discussion, book two is in Tombstone founded circa 1879.

Raphael de Etoil-Mortant wrote:

I am curious how the cap and ball and bullet will play out.

I do think that bullet revolvers are just emerging.
And almost everyone starts with a 3 shooter.

The first cartridge firing revolver was a Smith and Wesson, but it was a .22 basically a 'cap' with a bullet attached. There was also a large caliber'pin fire' cartridge revolver used in the civil war called the Lefaucheux M1858 if I remember correctly, one was carried by 'Stonewall Jackson' So over twenty years potential use of Cartridge revolvers.

What confuses me is the 'three shot' starting pistol, Um did such a thing even exist? Curious to see how this will play out, of course it's stuff we can sort out once the game gets started.

@everyone- the three chambered pistol is the starting firearm, for 100. see (4A, 16A, 21A) that is the firearm for starting characters if they want to buy a firearm. the gunslinger, spellslinger, any other class that gets a starting pistol gets the improved ones (5A, 17A, 22A) at no cost, the reason they are slightly more powerful and have 3 shots are even though its not historically correct its better than a one shot pistol that i thought would be appropriate for a common type weapon. any of those named pistols like the Lemat, Remington would all follow under the generic named pistols, rifles or shotguns. (5A, 17A, 22A) you will find throughout the adventure different firearms that will be slightly better in the other categories but I will be using only those named as base items. (for example you might find on someone a modified starting generic Revolver (5A) that would have a misfire of only a 1 (5F) that i could name a Lemat Special.) I hope that clears up the firearm part i tried to address all the questions asked. I'm not going to get caught up on cap and ball or technical stuff. I am trying to be as realistic as possible, but there might not be perfect historical facts. (like you might run into Indian (elves) that use Early firearms. that would be worthless to the PC's because they are a lot worse, but would make sense historically the Indians using what they find.)

@chobo - TY ill use that for some names of special weapons found.

@Serail- I think you should write your history as if lived since before the revolution. because even though the reckonoers didn't show up til after the start of the war does not mean there wasn't already a dark underworld with vampires and werewolves. like a descendant of count Dracula.

@everyone- the easiest way to do the bullets is simply to say a pack of bullets (10 bullets)(revolver, rifle, or shotgun would a dollar) then adding any pitted, silver, alchemical cartridge as listed cost. in addition because I got to thinking about Serail response as a count Dracula decendant. I have no problems with anyone making or playing a historical figure or pop culture iconic, (albert Einstein, Ab Lincoln vampire hunter lol, Wyatt Earp, Lt. Custer, Dr Jeckle and mister hyde, etc.) because you might run into some.

ok, I really want Sariel to start with a revolver, so were going with a Paladin with the Holy Gun Archetype.

Two question: do you mind if he has a second archetype if it doesn't alter the same class features?

Also, could we alter his 'lay on of hands' to also use negative energy to heal himself? if this is too out of the ordinary, perchance if he takes a 'Drawback' and gets positive and negative energy for LoH' instead of an extra feat.

Also, if interested, Here is his original backstory I will obviously alter it to fit the setting and timetable while answering the questions :-)

@Darkwing (and everyone else) I'm knee-jerk in reading Kim Newman's Anno Dracula series ...altnerate history where vampires (and most fiction) are real and interact with real figures. Perfect for this!

@Chapel Ty'El - I was reading your background, did you not want to be a survivor of the Massacre? I can work with that if you don't want to be for your character concept, but it was my preferred hook to get people together..

I think maybe I misunderstood, doesn't it say tieing the campaign trait into before or after the massacre? What I have is meant to be about the day before the massacre occurred. Sitting with another posses member and talking about why they are there.

I can definitely add/change some things around.

Updated Story. Mostly extending it into and after the massacre with the exception of an added line at the beginning.

7) Dawnrunner massacre story.:

”I am too damned old to be out chasing after boogeymen,” Eb passed the bottle back to the younger man. ”If’n I were a smarter man I'd leave the Reckoners to you young fellers,” he added as he slipped a clay explosive into his pack — gift from the Professor.

The younger man, tall and slight of frame — probably had Injin blood somewhere — gripped the bottle by it's neck, ”Sumuna others would agree with ya.” He took a swig and winced, though far less than he had an hour ago, ”Not me. My family's farm is east of El Paso, along the Rio, so I know all about 'Ol Eb’ ‘n’ his late night seances.”

Christ, will that rumor never die? Eb thought as he gestured for the bottle.

”I knew it was you a’soon as I saw that shiny shovel and that pipe. Is it true that ya use that shovel to dig up the dead 'n’ share your pipe with 'em to convince 'em to reveal where they stashed any riches?”

Eb nearly choked on the whiskey, ”Well, ya got me kid. That's a new one.” Eb scratched at the stubble on his cheek and sighed, ”No, son, that's not true…” Eb trailed off and took one last swig from the bottle before moving as if to stand.

The younger man struggled to get to his feet, gave up, and lay down, resting on one elbow, ”If you don't do seances, why'd the Professor bring you along?”

Eb settled back in next to the fire, ”I once saved the Professor's life.”

He meant to leave it at that but, the younger man’s eyes begged for more details. Eb sighed, ”I was doing some fishing down by the Rio. And all of a sudden I hear this hollerin’ comin’ from behind me, up on the bank. So, I snatch up my gun and climb up the bank to get a better look. And i see the Professor haulin’ ass through the shrubs straight at me. Behind him is the biggest gotdamn bear I've ever seen. The first thing I think is 'Why in the hell is a bear way out here along the Rio?’ Then I notice that this bear has bony plates sticking out of its first. As well as about half a dozen arrows and a hatchet.” Eb paused to let the image sink in, ”I had half a mind to dip right back down below the bank and let whatever was gonna happen happen but, the Professor and I locked eyes. 'Well shit,’ I think and climbed up all the way. 'Over here!’ I shouted and I fired a round off into the air, hopin’ it might scare the beast off. Instead, the thing just roared and came crashing straight my way. So, I popped the empty shell out and fumble in my pocket for another one. I'm diggin’ in my pocket all the while this abomination is intent on rippin’ me to shreds. I probably would've been a bit faster but, you know,” Eb shook the nearly empty bottle and stared off into the flames.

The younger man sat up on both elbows now. The story sobering him a bit, ”So? Did it get you?”

Eb blinked slowly at the younger man, ”...no….it didn't get me. But, I'd be lying if I said I took it down with one shot. My dumbass loaded with scattershot and only peppered the things hide. But at that point it was far too close to ask loading again, so, I tossed the gun aside and grabbed the only other thing on hand — this here shovel. I waited until the thing was right on top of me and I swung at its big, bloody head. Either I got lucky or all those arrows and such had hurt it enough for me to finish it off. The Professor was thankful, of course, and when I got the word that he was rounding up a group to come after the Reckoners….well, let's just say I need to have words with one of them boys.”

Eb sat there staring at his right hand and ignoring the questions that followed his tale. He had left out the part where he had been unable to find any shotgun shells in his pockets. How he had almost given up and had resorted to prayer when he felt a twitch in the palm of his right hand. And how he knew God had plucked a shell from his pack and placed it into his hand. He also left out the fact that he had nearly missed with shovel but, his arm had jerked at the last second and connected the blade with the bear's skull.

Somewhere in the night a coyote yipped and Eb’s hand twitched.

**********************************************

”Mr. Stryngvos!”[b]

Eb's right hand shot out and gripped the side of the small building, acting as an anchor and stopping him. He nearly dropped the shotgun in his left hand from the sudden jerk. Eb peared down the alley behind the building and was just able to make out the shape of man, slight of frame, crawling away from dozens of animated corpses. Decayed flesh hung off of the an alabaster skeleton like a horrific mockery of a chasuble. None of them bothered to look at Eb, they all kept their empty eyes turned on the man on the ground. On of the monsters stepped forward and raised a rusted cavalry saber.

The shotgun spoke. The ribcages of three of the skeletons replied by exploding into thousands of tiny shards.

[B]”Now's when you get up!” Eb shouted to to the man on the ground. The remaining undead would be on the younger man and Eb would not get another shot off before that happened. The younger scrambled to his feet and over to Eb. Eb gripped his gun in one hand and pushed the younger man ahead of him down the narrow street.

Over an hour had passed since the alley way and the younger man was still struggling to get his breathing under control. The two had taken refuge on the roof of an adobe house at the end of the street. The younger man had proved to be smarter than he had let on and been rolling barrels of gunpowder towards the house when he had been ambushed. Already there were four barrels on one side of the street, each with a flask of alchemist's for sitting on top. Now, they crouched on the rooftop waiting for the undead militia to follow them. Where are they? Eb thought as he scanned the darkness for movement.

After an eternity of waiting, something finally moved in the shadows. Eb placed a hand on the younger man's shoulder, ”It's okay, son. We stick to the plan. And we'll make it out of this alive.” He hoped that the younger man had not heard the doubt in Eb’s voice.

Kenneth,” the younger man spoke without pulling his eyes from the undead, ”My name's Kenneth. Kenneth Walsh. My baby sister's buried in that cemetery you tend. We couldn't afford nothing fancy, but it's got her name on it: Clara Walsh. You know it?”[b]

[B]”I do,” Eb lied.

The Kenneth smiled and Eb saw just how young he truly was.

Kenneth began to say something else when one of the flasks exploded against the wall of the house.

”Well shit!” Eb exclaimed, ”Seems they done figured us out.” He grunted and pulled the last few shells from his coat pocket, lining them neatly along his side. The three red ones might help for softening them up but, those two green slug shells would only help if something big came out. Either way, it was not enough.

Kenneth raised his rifle and took aim. Another explosion of flame hit the house and forced him to shield his eyes from the burst of heat. Eb squinted through the flames and saw that the mass was creeping forward.

[I]They're using the fire to keep us pinned down./I][

A third flask arced overhead and a heartbeat later tendrils of flame reached out to singe the legs of both men. Kenneth jumped to his feet as the flames climbed the leg of his pants. Before Eb could pull Kenneth back down, he said the younger man’s eyes go wide. At first, Eb thought that he had been shot but, there had been no gun fire. Not nearby anyhow.

Then Eb the coarse rope gripping the young neck.

Kenneth let out a pitiable groan and was yanked hard from the rooftop.

The priestly skeleton let out an ungodly laugh as it dragged Kenneth through the dirt and shadows. The other undead stood motionless as they watched Kenneth struggle against the lasso. They had waited an eternity for him. What would a few more moments be?

Eb raised his gun and tried to draw a bead on the one dragging Kenneth but, the others closed in around to shield it.

The young man dug his fingers into the flesh if his own neck and pulled at the rope. He managed to croak out two words: ”Do it!”

Eb nodded and turned to aim at the fourth flask and his heart sank. It was gone. As his mind raced to comprehend what that could mean the fourth flask erupted against his feet, dousing him in flames. Eb screamed and the gun dropped from his hands and over the edge of the house. He tried to push passed the pain but, his whole world seemed to be made of flame. Flame. Flame and... itching. Itching in the palm of his right hand. And then a clay ball.

He did not think. He did not question. Eb simply hurled the ball into the crowd then began rolling around on the roof to extinguish the fire. A few seconds later, he heard an explosion which was, in turn, followed by four more, far louder, explosions and then silence.

**********************************************

Weeks later, Eb stood leaning on a cane as he said a small prayer for the Walsh family. He had been the one to give the news regarding Kenneth's death and though he had been unable to recover any of the young man's body, he had offered to cover any funeral costs they might incur and would, of course, lay the marker next to Clara's. The yellow flowers between the siblings’ markers had wilted since Eb had last made his way up the hill to visit. The trip was easier now, though he suspected it may never be as easy at it had before he had left with Lorrimar to chase after boogeymen.

Eb let the cane fall away and strained to kneel on his good leg. He took the wilted flowers from the simple, copper cup and replaced them with the fresh ones he had picked that morning.

DarkWingD could you please check my character and give me some advice how to improve my application.

If you're looking for some historical figures to add to the campaign or to your back story here is a link

Sovereign Court

I forgot to mention that since the story took me there I added the Lame Oracle curse and took Point Blank Shot.

@seriel- if you want lay of hands negative energy that's fine, you will only be able to channel the negative energy also.

or you can take the Life dominant soul feat then you can heal yourself with positive energy.

you can double the archetype, as long as it doesn't alter the same class features.

@chapel- I was going to say ok to as is, but then I saw your update, really good. and I'm fine with the age bonuses Btw (but only because you didnt min/max with it.)

@Chobo- Ty.

@Raphael- I could have sworn I read your background, now it says pending. are you changing it? or am I remembering incorrectly on reading it.

Ouch, I did write it down and must have overcopied it. I will rewrite it tonight!

Bump.

Sovereign Court

I'm surprised there aren't submissions flooding in. This is a phenomenal idea.

Still slogging along. There is a small chance my savage technologist becomes a skald or a medium for more of a shaman like vibe. The feel I originally had for my PC is changing as I flesh out his background, connections,etc..

I have a question about the Tongues curse. It reads "Pick one of the following languages: Abyssal, Aklo, Aquan, Auran, Celestial, Ignan, Infernal, or Terran." Are you using these languages or substituting them out? If you are changing them please let me know what the options are. Thank you kindly.

I think the idea's amazing, too... it should work out very nicely.

(Then again, I wouldn't have submitted stuff if I didn't like the idea...)

LOL, Don't worry, We haven't forgot about this! I'm working on updating Seamus' backstory, trying to keep it from sounding too much like 'Blade'!

Don't feel bad Chobo, I'm relooking at all possible 'divine' classes for Sariel, I like Paladin but he just doesn't feel LG, so I'm rehashing all possibilities.

DarkWingD I'm seriously considering "Hunter" with the 'verminous Hunter' and 'divine' archetype. Would we be able to add 'inflict wounds' to the hunters spell list? I'm assuming that would allow Sariel to 'heal' himself using negative energy.

Backstory updated, just missing the dawnrunner massacre.

Sariel Patrick Cornelius wrote:

The Grey Paladin archetype allows for non-lawful paladins. You might also consider the Battle Host Occultist.

this is the alias that I am using for this game

Thanks for the heads-up on 'Battle Host Occultist.' I haven't read much on the Occult class.

I considered 'Grey Paladin' but you give up a lot, and don't get much other than being not LG. And frankly I liked the starting weapon from 'Holy Gun.'

It appears 'Battle Host' has a MW weapon. HMMM, If I'm going to do HG I will need a story about a 'previous gun owner.'

dawnrunner story

it seemed like years before the sun rose quietly into the sky. the horrors of the previous night were still on Dolgrin's mind. as he was holding the bloody stump of a shoulder that he was trying to staunch, he recalled what happened that fateful night.

"they're everywhere!" shouted Rogar, as the ghouls streamed down from the sides of the crater to kill the posse. the rest of the posse started unloading their guns on the undead scum. many of the ghouls were killed or incapacitated by the amount of bullets and shrapnel that flew into the swarm. Dolgrin pulled out his revolver and started firing. he remembered killing quite a few before the one ghoul got past his gun and sank its teeth into his arm. there was a sickening crunch as the bone snapped and the skin separated.

"get off of him!" Rogar screamed as he swung his woodman's ax at the thing. [i]thunk![i/] the ghoul fell back, angered at getting separated from its prey.

"professor! get Dolgrin out of here, i'll hold them off" was the last thing he heard his friend say before Dolgrin was dragged into the saloon.

"we couldn't find him among the bodies." he heard the professor say as his mind snapped back into the present. "that's alright," Dolgrin said, his tone of voice was very still, "you tried".

did I miss anything important in my submission?

Backstory is added and dawnrunner story is added.

In a few days the recruitment will be closed.

@chobo- no I'm ok with those languages on the curse.
@sariel- I'm ok with adding inflict
@dwarf- no, ty.
@raphael- awesome thank you.

when are we starting the campaign?

This Sunday is when recruitment is closed, then I will choose on Monday, start on that wed.

got it.

Anything else you need from Reuben? (I know I'm still working on gear -- any other suggestions?)

Your good Reuben.

DarkWingD, I'm just not loving any of the ideas that I've come up with for Sariel. So I'm going to bow out of this one. Thanks for running the game and good luck to all. I'll be reading along when I have time.

Having a bad case of writers block and will have to pull out too. Good luck all!

I am sorry I was expecting a larger turnout based on the interest check thread. where several applications are good some have red flags that I typically don't choose for recruitment. so I have decided to try this recruitment at a later date deciding that now must not be the time to start this. where I still think this is a good idea, it maybe just not the right time. or I might do a more traditional AP to DM. thank you for everyone who submitted.

Damn.

Sovereign Court

I checked in early today and had a feeling that it might have been going this way.

Sad day.

I'll keep an eye out for it if it ever comes back around.

I was very much looking forward to this...

Reuben will certainly be keeping an eye out for this one (assuming he didn't get any red flags; the DM can always PM me if he thinks I'm one of them.)

oh well

it was a cool idea
