Petros has culture. Kellids have music, art, poetry. We tell tales, sing songs of sadness and glory and beauty. The philosophies of Kellid kings and poets are still read by men to this day and they discuss hope, beauty, and the hard truth of survival.

But, what does the music of the Kellid people sound like?

  • We know what the music of the Ulfen sounds like (examples of Norse music survive to this day)
  • We know what the music of the Chelish people sounds like (Italian Opera)
  • We know what the music of the Kelishite people sounds like (Arabian Music is widely available)
  • We can even guess at the music of the Shoanti (they are kind of "Native American" in culture)
Any thoughts?

I believe that the general consensus is that Kellids are a Celtic/Germanic tribal analog, with maybe some Russian/Slavic thrown in. So that might be a good place to start.

Judging by what Erik Mona wrote, the music of the Kellid people should sound like Cimmerian music. Which hasn't existed outside of fiction and must be created and interpreted from scratch anyway.

Knut Avenstroup Haugen, composing the score to the "Age of Conan" MMORPG approached it like this:

Quote:
"The music for lowland Cimmeria is inspired by Celtic musical traditions and the solo violin is the main instrument here. In the Cimmerian highlands and the Eiglophian Mountains, the Norse and Nordic influences are strong and Helene Bøksle's voice represents a kind of mountain spirit - much like Atali of Conan lore."

Here's a sample of his work (YouTube link)

In my own mind, not being a great Conan aficionado, I imagine Kellid music would feature a lot of drum banging and horn blaring.
Guttural death metal grunts optional.

I would look at a lot of Scottish Music would work as well.
Look up Flowers of the Forest.
There is a tonne of good Irish and Welsh Celtic music as well. The band Clannad has rather a lot of music that works well as mood/background music

I was thinking that, given that the Kellids are a kind of "generic" barbarian** culture, that the Germanic or Slavic might be better. Problem is that Germanic tribal music (as opposed to Norse or Celtic) is kind of hard to find.

** - Yes I realize that Robert E. Howard's Cimmerians were supposed to be a "proto-Celtic culture.
