Check on a "new" magic item

Advice

Greetings travelers!

I created a small magic item and i would like to know, if the stats (CL, price etc.) are adequate or need adjusting. I made it really cheap, because it cannot be used to harm anyone and the effect is not "powerful" in any way.

Your feedback is most appreciated.
Here the item:

HOMELY BLANKET
Aura faint transmutation; CL 3rd
Slot none; Price 500 gp; Weight 1/4 lb.
DESCRIPTION
This fine blanket gleams in the light as if it were made out of metal. It is warm and feels soft to the touch. The blanket prevents the user from feeling uncomfortable in cold weather. Used for warmth only, the blanket produces warmth continuously until the command word is spoken. It can also be used to turn hot for 4 hours a day, but never hot enough to hurt a creature or start fires. After 4 hours used in this fashion, the blanket deactivates and cannot be reactivated for 24 hours.
CONSTRUCTION
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, heat metal; Cost 250 gp

I would argue prestidigitation but continuous.

So 1000 GP price.

Hmm..the "hot" feature is not really required, so that could work.

BUT: Two points i like to make:

1. The effect is limited to warmth, ignoring all other effects that prestidigitation could accomplish.

2. The Campfire Bead for example is even cheaper, while more powerful.

So i'm not really sure if the costs should be that high.

Thoughts?

If you can think up of a better way to keep a cloth warm and comfortable and clean, go ahead.

The campfire bead also makes a fire, you probably don't want to set your cloth on fire, you even might want to avoid the lighting effect the fire might have. Though it probably keeps some animals away.
So why not use that one?

Isn't that what blankets do anyway?

I don't object to the price, but I'd suggest being more specific - eg, you are affected by cold weather as though it was 50 degrees warmer, or something like that.

For comparison, see Endure Elements, which stops working entire at -50F.

Ok, maybe it would be best to tell you why i wanted to create such an item in the first place.

I plan to use it to keep eggs warm for the hatching process.

This item can be used for other purposes as well, but this was my initial reason for creating it.
If you have a better idea how to accomplish this in form of a minor magic item, i'm grateful for your thoughts :)

500 gp might even be a little high for what amounts to mostly a flavor item. I'd say 250gp, CL1, require prestidigitation. It's a magical electric blanket.

Worth pointing out that there are settlements at temperatures below when Endure Elements functions.

Exactly :)

In a world where the cold-weather rules are so harsh that (by a literal interpretation) a fully dressed man (or polar bear) will freeze to death after walking in the snow for a few hours, a magic electric blanket that doesn't need to be plugged in would be a very precious commodity.

Hi Matthew,

so what would be your suggestion concerning a price? :)

Thanks!

500gp seems fine - it's hardly the only magical protection against cold out there - but I think you should specify that it doesn't work below a certain temperature.

500 gp seems fine. Nobody argues that a torch should be more expensive in cold environments. : / Just note that in ridiculously cold environments the warmth provided may be insufficient to sustain a creature, same as any other heat source.

Thanks for the input, will add a temperature limit.

500GP cost or base price for creation?

500 price, 250 creation?

Hi again,

i've changed the approach to the following description.
Final feedback is most appreciated.

HOMELY BLANKET
Aura faint universal; CL 3rd
Slot none; Price 500 gp; Weight 2 lbs

DESCRIPTION
This blanket keeps a constant temperature of 90 degrees Fahrenheit in environments from 120 to 15 degrees. In colder or hotter environments, the blanket will gradually get colder or hotter until it reaches 90 degrees + 50% of the environmental difference in temperature. In a low temperature region of -50 degrees, the blanket would reach 90 – (50% * (140)) = 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

CONSTRUCTION
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, Prestidigitation; Cost 250 gp

It's fine.

Thanks!
