E8 with Mythic, any tips?

Homebrew and House Rules

I'm in a boat, where in theory I feel like Mythic and E8 would work for my gaming style: E8 cuts back on much of the abuses of later level magic, but feels to cap out at too low a power level to enable some of the "Big Damn Heroes" stuff I like to see in later games. I'm all for lower stakes, but after a certain point, it's fun to have the world-ending plotlines (There's a reason that APs, even though I generally avoid them, go to 15th level or beyond). As such I feel like Mythic could help with that, but I remember trying it once before. I don't remember specifics on what went wrong, but it felt like too steep a step up, so does anyone have any good advice on how to better integrate Mythic play with E8?

Nothing I know personally, but someone's running an E6 + Mythic PbP here.

I plan to gm a E6/E8 game with mythic tier 3, higher tiers seems too powerful to be compatible with an E8 game (in my opinion)

We've only scratched the surface of Mythic with high level characters, in order to emulate their old 3.5 Epic selves. I have seen (through HeroLab community content) that Legendary Games has an extensive 3PP Mythic line, with many optional tweaks that reign in the basic Mythic abuses. Might want to check them out.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I've run two different E6 + Mythic games. One was a conversion of Legacy of Fire, the other a home-brew ancient Greece campaign where the PCs were demi-gods. The first game had 5 Mythic Tiers which was way too many. It was a fun game, but was so overpowered at the end as to be comical. The second game had 4 Mythic Tiers and wasn't as crazy. I think if I did another, it would be either 3 or 4 Tiers.

Both games had the kind of feel I think you are looking for. Nothing "game breaking" was happening (no 4th+ level spells), but the PCs were very powerful and could do amazing (unbelievable?) things. Balancing encounters got challenging near the end - mostly in trying to keep non-E6 level abilities out (negative levels, feeblemind, etc.) My E6 tends to top out with the PCs effectively at APL 10. Add 4 Mythic Tiers and the final BBEG encounter was CR 17.

I would advise using mythic monsters sparingly. When every encounter is against a mythic foe, the game feels flat. However, if mythic monsters are rare and used in key encounters, it adds a lot to the game and made for very memorable moments.
