Who is your favorite combat capable caster?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Weird question? Well, I'm curious what your favorite class that can use magic and still fight with weapons somewhat well is, such as the Paladin, Cleric, Warpriest, Ranger, Alchemist, Bloodrager and so on.

Basicaly any character that can pick up a weapon and do alright/well, While also being able to use magic.

Edit: Maybe a easier way to put it would be, What is your favorite full or 3/4 BAB class that can use magic?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Favorite is hard since they are all different. Bloodrager, Bard, WP, Investigator are probably my favorites high damaging caster classes.

Hunter I guess. Paladin would be close. Id choose magus if it wasn't so single focused one way to do it.

Occultist, Mesmerist, Alchemist, Spiritualist and Inquisitor are all up there for me.

Bladebound kensai is, by far, my favorite.

Mesmerist. They get the DCs of a full caster with the flexibility of 3/4 BAB, a damage boost, and defensive abilities.

Antipaladin gets a permanent summons, which is otherwise a capstone ability. I usually go for Insinuator, though, so no casting there.

Occultist. Best version of a "Mage Knight" I've seen and absurdly flexible if you want.

Silver Crusade RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

The Iron Caster (Fighter that can cast SLAs). :)

Dark Archive

You can build a mean melee wizard. If you mean pick up class and dont optimize than bard is reasonbly ok at it.

My favorite is still a well built wizard.

Silver Crusade

Bladebound Hexcrafter Magus without a doubt.

Kitsune Avenger Vigilante with the Nine-Tailed Scion trait, all the Magical Tail feats and Realistic Likeness. Put all your Favored Class Bonuses into Magical Tail and you can get them all by 8th level.

Look like anyone, toss around fun enchantments and illusions, and also beat the snot out of pretty much anyone.

Arcane Duelist Bard. I'm the party favorite. Inspire Courage bonuses. Discordant Voice also helps. I know my character isn't so tough, but I was able to help stand up to our party's doppleganger Eidolon. Deafening Song Bolt and Mirror image helped!

Inquisitor

Liberty's Edge

I have to pick one?

Warpriest is good at more different combat styles available than any other class. Like seriously, more even than the fighter.

Investigator has the good stuff of the alchemy formula list, amazing skill check potential and studied combat's crazy fast scaling, which has led me to play a good few.

The Inquisitor probably has the best all-round package, because Paizo seemed to just give it one of everything and then some more.

Bards are quite versatile, no combat slouches, and have a good variety of combat and narrative options.

Magus is surprisingly versatile despite the community fixation on dex-based shocking grasp builds. It seems like an exceptionally rewarding class and I want to play one already.

But my favourite? Probably Occultist. Cool resource system, cool spell system, cool flavour, incredibly versatile, and lots of unique and very powerful abilities!

I have played quite a few, but nothing comes close to the barb/oracle/rage prophet wielding a L size two-handed weapon.

At level 16 (2/10/4), I've dealt 279 damage in a full round attack (with a max of 320, but we all know that will never happen), easily buffed up to 365 hp, reached 38 str, and easily felled storm giants in a single round.

Can heal himself while raged, cast level 6 spells, doesn't have the spell dc of a pure caster, but most of his spells are self-buff/party-buff and with some de-buffs tossed in.

For perspective, I've played paladins, rangers, and combat clerics.

Nothing comes close to the oracle of battle/rage prophet dip combo.

Liberty's Edge

Inquisitor and wildshaping druid are my favorite classes in the game, so... One of those, depending on how important knowledge skills are.
