Hi folks,

I've been wanting to run Tom Moldvay's classic "The Lost City" for quite a long time and was wondering if anyone would be interested. We could either play the original Basic D&D version (using a retro-clone like Labyrinth Lord) if you don't have the original books, or I could easily update it to Pathfinder.

If you don't know much about the adventure, you can read about it on its Wikipedia page HERE.

Retro!

I would be interested in playing, although I would vote for PF rules.

I am a fan of these themes.

Glad you are interested, Dorian, and we have one vote for Pathfinder. It's a basic dungeon crawl, but with lots of interesting setting stuff added in. I've owned it since the early 80s, but never got to play it with my friends back when.

I'd probably set it in Golarion, most likely in the deserts of Casmaron.

Funny, but back then, we didn't run many mods; mostly home brew adventures: 90% of them dungeon crawls.
We used to rotate adventures; each person developing a dungeon. Fun times!

I'd be interested with a preference for using pathfinder rules.

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

I would be interested and would be down for Labyrinth Lord, Swords and Wizardry or another old school system.

I'm interested. Pathfinder if possible, please. We could keep things simple by using the classes in the CRB, for the old school feel.

Looks like we have enough interest to start recruitment and most people prefer Pathfinder. Here are the PC generation details:

1st level
Abilities: roll 4d6 six times and drop the lowest die
Classes and races: any from CRB
Roll for starting wealth as per CRB
Standard gods

PCs are from the Inner Sea region, but are traveling to Casmaron. Decideb why in your backstory

12, 13, 9, 6, 13, 8

I'll take a minute to think up a good PC for these incredibly epic stats.

hey, with racial adjustments, you could get up to a 15!

And, here we go!:

1: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 1, 6) = 12 11
2: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 2, 3) = 13 11
3: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 4, 5) = 12 11
4: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 3, 4) = 15 13
5: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 2, 3) = 12 10
6: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 2, 3) = 11 10
7: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 2, 5) = 18 16

Not the worst set that I' ve rolled...time to ponder...core...ok.

Staying with the nostalgia motif; I am going to build my first ever D & D character: Loges the Wise male human Wizard.

I shall start the fun of building him.

Are you allowing traits?

Thank you for running.

Ooh! May I join as well? I love those old D&D adventure modules (ah, the nostalgia...) and never played in that one. I'm also a fan of keeping things simple for characters (though I have used splatbooks from time to time myself), so this campaign sounds prefect for me.

I've never used the die roller here before, but here goes...

Stats: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 2, 4) = 124d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 6, 6) = 164d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 3, 1) = 104d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 3, 6) = 174d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 2, 3) = 134d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 3, 4) = 17

I wish my dice at home treated me that nicely!

So let's see, that's an array of:

11
15
9
15
11
14

Good stuff! I usually like the melee-type classes, so might go with a barbarian or a rogue that likes to get into the thick of things.

Thanks for running, I'm looking forward to the game!

That's true! I'm considering a rogue nicknamed '10 foot pole', as in "I wouldn't touch you with a 10-foot pole".

Author of Masque of Dreams

I have a passing interest in the subject. ;)

What about D&D Rules Cyclopedia rules?

Indeed, I have fond memories of crafting dungeons on graph paper, chortling over the traps and monsters I filled the rooms and passageways with. Often with no thought as to the ecosystem of said dungeon - but that never stopped anyone back in the old days of D&D!

As a side note, I prefer the original, cobbled-together feel of the Mystara setting myself.

4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 5, 2) = 164d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 2, 2) = 164d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 5, 5) = 184d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 1, 3) = 104d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 4, 4) = 124d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 4, 2) = 13

Not bad! 14, 14, 16, 9, 10, 11.

Lots more interest, great! I'll hold applications open until next Friday and then pick a group of 5 or 6.

Note that I go mostly go by your background and personality submissions, so don't worry if all the crunch is not there. I'll pick a party of we'll thought-out characters with a range of abilities.

Oh, I forgot to mention, no evil alignments. I'm willing to deal with morally ambiguous, but I want everyone to feel they're playing on the same team.

As for the setting, let us say that you have all found yourself in the Qadiran capital of Katheer signing up as guards (or drovers or another useful job) in a Keleshite caravan headed east toward the central satrapies of the Empire of Kelesh. Its an overland camel caravan that's making a few trading stops in Qadira before heading across the dry deserts and plains of Casmaron.

The reason why you find yourself in Katheer singing on for such an arduous job is up to you. You could simply want to visit the wondrous sites of Kelesh. You could be running away from something or someone. You could be on a quest from G*d, or you could just need the money; the choice is yours.

Something else I forgot to mention:

Although I am using the Moldvay module for this adventure (keeping many, if not most of the locations, NPCs, and critters), this will not strictly be a totally old school, kick in the door, hack'n'slash and don't ask questions kind of gig. Not that I think there's anything wrong with that, I just don't think that kind of play lends itself very well to PbP gaming.

I have found that its the dramatic conflicts (i.e. the conflict and relationships between the PCs and between the PCs and NPCs, as well as striving to achieve the overarching goals of the PCs) rather than the procedural hurdles (disarming traps, killing monsters, deciphering riddles) that allow PbP games to really shine. I will therefore try to focus as much as I can on the former, while sprinkling in the latter.

I just wanted everyone to understand this before they sign on the dotted line.

I have been thinking about what type of character for the quest. I thought that rerolling up my first pc would fit, but not certain; only because if I did that I don't want to do it for a one shot.
If all goes well (assuming he gets chosen, of course), would further quests, perhaps, be given?
After reading the wiki info, I am under the impression that we go in at 1st and get chew upped and spat out at 3rd?

hhhmmmm old school feel, PF rules, with a little drama added in, why not.

4d6 - 1 ⇒ (1, 1, 5, 3) - 1 = 9
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (1, 6, 6, 6) - 1 = 18
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (4, 2, 5, 1) - 1 = 11
4d6 - 2 ⇒ (2, 3, 5, 4) - 2 = 12
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (3, 5, 1, 5) - 1 = 13
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (1, 3, 4, 3) - 1 = 10

I guess the question is if they need to be posted in order or if I can place whichever stat. with whichever ability I want.

There are a number of questions there. I'll be giving out XP in the normal Pathfinder style, so I don't know how quickly you'll advance. The stats you roll are the ones you have, however; no re-rolling.

Apologies, I didn't mean that I wanted to reroll stats. I was refering to rebuilding my first ever character.
I was curious as to a possibility of continuing with these characters after this mod?

Let's just get through this one first :)

Continuations in PbP games depend on lots of factors that can't be foreseen (personal interactions, people's RL schedules, interest, etc).

Ok. I shall work on Loges the Wise human Wizard.

Liberty's Edge

Ok...gotta give this old school game a shot!!

4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 1, 4) = 9
4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 4, 4) = 13
4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 3, 3) = 10
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 5, 3) = 20
4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 6, 2) = 11
4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 2, 6) = 16

So we have: 08,11,09,17,10,14

Original Cyclopedia would have been fun too, or even 5th edition for that original feel, but if all want pathfinder, who am I to stand in their way..lol

I am thinking of a dwarven warpriest to help with healing and fighting...will stat up shortly and begin work on background and personality.

only core rule book classes, Daniel...

Liberty's Edge

d'oh...just noticed that...well then just a cleric then...lol

This is Dorian's work in progress...

I'll just repost the character creation rules so that they're all in one place:

* 1st level PCs
* No evil alignments
* Roll 4d6 and take out the lowest die for ability scores; assign them as desired
* Max hp
* Core Rulebook classes and races only
* Roll for starting gold per the Core Rulebook
* 2 traits + 1 disadvantage (if desired) to add 1 additional trait

Anything I forgot?

Planning on going fighter, haven't decided race yet.

starting wealth: 5d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 3, 3, 1) = 18

Also are you considering archetypes at all? I'm a fan of the 'two handed fighter' but it is from the advanced players guide.

Dark Archive

This is a fun module, folks.

I am currently running a game of it that has been going on for over a year now. Of course, I modified the original module quite a bit.

Have fun!

4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 1, 1) = 8 7
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 5, 6) = 23 18
4d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 1, 5) = 10 9
4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 6, 5) = 15 13
4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 2, 3) = 7 6
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 1, 4) = 14 13

These are wild!! So many ideas with these, gotta take a moment.

EDIT: okay, I think an absolute brute of a human ranger would be fun with these stats. Dumb as a post and so uncharismatic that even the animals shun him. Oh, and slightly clumsy, too.

Do you want us to stick to the core rulebook only for feats etc or is it just for the classes. I'm making a two handed weapon fighter and there are some feats like cleaving finish in the advance players guide and some alternate class features for fighters in the Weapon Masters and Armor Masters books. Not a deal breaker but if they aren't on the table I might as well reconsider now.

Wealth: 5d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 5, 6, 4) = 22

Zuberi Ogbonna
Human (Mwangi-Mauxi), Fighter, NG, Age 19, Hair: Black, Eyes: Green

Background:

Zuberi hails originally from Thuvian capital of Merad. A year ago he found the journal of a now long dead Kellish noblewoman. She had run away from her family and lived a life of adventure. Her tales inflamed his imagination. She had died ten years previously but as he found out on his inquiries that when she died of old age her family had sent servants to retrieve her body to be entombed into the family mausoleum. He found it tragic that she spent her life running from them but in death could not escape them. The servants had not taken her journal, her family knew not of the wonders she had seen and deeds she had done.

Zuberi keeps the journal with him and it inspires him to seek out a life of adventure beyond his homeland and see the world with his own eyes and not just through the words of Akhlata, the late noblewoman. More recently he has set his course towards Casmoran. He does not know the lands there but perhaps he can track down her family and her resting place. Make them see the woman she became not just a foot note and likely a black sheep of the family rarely spoken of.

He is a large swarthy man who in his early adventuring life has already had to discard the breastplate and greatsword he set out with at the beginning of his travels through damage, replacing them with other items he has acquired in his travels. He isn’t sure he can return to his homeland, like Akhlata returning home to the expectations demanded of him would be stiffling though in very different ways. At home he was one amongst many, the further he gets from home the more wonders he sees and more people take note of him for both his increasing skill and that in their viewpoint his exotic foreign nature.
