Hobgoblin Skald- thoughts?

So, after an attempted raid of the Redjaw Camp in Book 1- which was supposed to be a guerilla hit, turned into a prolonged siege in which we got cocky killed several named PC's with a coup d'grace only to be overwhelmed.
My Ifrit Sword Devil (Ranger), the Ratfolk Ninja, and the Dwarf Paladin were captured as a result of our "arrogance and bravado*" getting the better of us.

*

Spoiler:
The tides turns when the Paladin, after hearing that my Ranger was serious injured, decided to pursue enemies down a flight of stairs rather than heal my character and enable our escape. The Archetype my Ranger has loses out on spell casting.

So, in anticipation of my characters death, I'm getting a second one prepped- a Hobgoblin Skald. I'm still deciding on the character's backstory, but I'm thinking of giving it the "Unfit" trait and having many ranks in Disguise knowing the animosity towards hobgoblins in the campaign.

The Party consists of:
Dwarf Paladin
Ratfolk Ninja
Suli Sorcerer/Ranger going Dragon Disciple [doesn't do a lot of spellcasting]
Drow Ranger/Paladin/Bloodrager [archery focused]
Half-orc Witch
and my Ifrit Ranger

Our witch is doing his best as a support caster, but Hexes and some spells only go so far.
So, a Skald for buffing capabilities and rage song and skills. A bard doesn't really fit the build, but a skald does.

So, if this forum is still active, what's some recommended builds? I don't see think character getting into effective melee, being a primary support caster type.

Hobgoblins shun arcane magic, so a skald would be rare. But it sounds like you're going for an outcast (and, presumably, a traitor).

There are a few rage powers that relate to Intimidate, so instead of "Unfit" I'd suggest taking the "Fearsome" alternate racial trait (in Advanced Race Guide), which grants +4 to Intimidate checks. "Authoritative" could work instead if you end up being the face of the party.

You might get more build advice by posting in the Advice thread. Good luck!

Have you talked to your DM about this? There are very strong warnings against playing a hobgoblin in this adventure. Also, what's your new Skald going to look like? While I love the class, it suffers a bit from needing the right party to pair with, and most of your melee people seem to have been captured in that last event.

Hobgoblins should not be PCs in this adventure.

Why aren't the residents more terrified of this bunch of monsters than they are the hobgoblins!!!

seriously.

someone posted on here that their party was a pack of four gnoll mercenaries who were headed to a job when the hobgoblins show up, and decide to get back at the guys who ruined their party.

that makes sense. this... is a menagerie of horrors. but have fun!

Because hobgoblins aren't typically adventurers. Orcs would have the same problem (and even half-orcs are heavily discriminated against). I admit, at first glance, they are terrifying, however.

I am aware and ran the idea past the GM. while the character itself hasn't be brought into the campaign yet, was planning on relying heavily on Disguise and False Face to mask the PC's identity to garner trust.

I'm just ruminating the idea of a Skald because of the need for a versatile caster. Now that the party composition has changed- the Suli Sorcerer/Ranger and Ratfolk Ninja were slain, i may not keep the Hobgoblin race idea.

The Ratfolk player is contemplating a Changeling Spiritualist [with his ratfolk as the phantom, jokingly], no idea what the Suli player is bringing.

yeah... the risk isn't just the other players - who are going to be veterans of fighting hobgoblin infiltrators and if they are roleplaying, will immediately try to kill your character after they figure out what he is - but everyone else who is also going to be of the "kill hobgoblin on sight" variety. Literally every single NPC who isn't evil is going to be negatively disposed to a party having a hobgoblin in it.

It's grandstanding and unnecessary - trying to be a proud nail, if you will.

Be anything else before being a hobgoblin in this campaign.

It's not even a great idea Mechanically. Hobgoblin offers very little to the Skald.

That's a terribly bad idea which could potentially lead to some ugly RL drama when your character is ratted out and somebody from your party decides to do the "right thing" and full attack you.

If the character even made it into the campaign, I'd have no qualms to abandoning [death or retreat] the character if it came to blows with the party.

The whole premise behind the character was proving to the Hobgoblin Command Structure, that just because you are "unfit" to serve in the military, doesn't mean you aren't able to contribute to the war efforts and whatnot- if that meant helping the survives to prove the point than so be it.
Death mattered not, to this character. Arcane caster deemed Unfit to contribute to Hobgoblin Conglomerate- an outcast.

That said, the structure of the party has shifted.
The Suli Sorcerer/Ranger has brought in the brother, a Suli Bloodrager.
The Ratfolk Ninja brought a Changeling "bad touch" Spiritualist
The Drow Archer has decided not to constantly piss off the GM, and replaced it with an Elf Slayer/Fighter [Sniper/Archer build].
Still have my Ifrit Ranger, the Dwarf Paladin, and the Half-orc Witch.

It may be some time before the Skald is needed for the party.
