[Spoilers] Going directly from Iron Gods to Starfinder?

At the end of Iron Gods, the “Continuing the Campaign” (page 63 of The Divinity Drive) gives the option for Technology to spread throughout Golarion.

Spoiler:
After the defeat of the Technic League and the conclusion of the events of the adventure, the PCs f ind themselves in possession of a wealth of technological items. With the Technic League’s stranglehold on Androffan technology over, the PCs now have the option to spread technology throughout Golarion or further curtail its expansion. Many scholars and heads of state would love to get their hands on Androffan gear, as would the engineers of Alkenstar. If the PCs allow the spread of technology, they also see an increase in the worship of Brigh (and of Zyphus to a lesser degree, since he loves witnessing the accidents that result from such a surge of dangerous technology).

If I understand correctly, this would allow the campaign to transition to something like Starfinder. If so …

  • After the resulting world war, What would be the resulting politics of Golarion?
  • How long would it take the people of Golarion to “digest” the new knowledge and start manufacturing technological items?
  • How would the rest of the System react?

Finally, would it be worth the effort?

But I am planning on transitioning from Iron Gods to Starfinder. I am changing the ending of Iron Gods to have the players floating away from Golaria in a spaceship, having just destroyed the end boss who managed to blast itself out from Golaria. The PC's are unable to get back to Golaria, and have to enter cyrofreeze to survive, and are presumably lost forever...

Until I'll have them show up again as NPCs in the Starfinder era, thousands of years in the future, when their ship has been found and they have all been thawed out. Not sure what role they will play yet, but should be fun.


I will attempt to answer your questions.

1. I would think that Avistan would colonize pretty much everywhere else. This would be because, since they are closer, they would get the technology first. From here, they would set out to make empires, both by fighting each other and colonizing other continents. Since, at this time, no other continent would have advanced technology, Cheliax, Taldor, Molthune, etc, would have large empires, not unlike the European empires of the 1600-1700s.


2. I think it would be at least a 100 years, probably more, for clockwork/firearm scholars to wrap their heads around technology. These people would probably not share this secret and would instead try to profit on it. So, it would take at least 150 years for most places to be able to manufacture advanced technology.

3. This one I don't really know. I don't own distant world's or anything.

Looking at how the technology would flow ...
  • Mendev would benefit almost immediately from new technology, specifically communications and vehicles. Demons would still require magic to fight, but these would greatly help in bringing the correct resources to counter any incursion. Surveillance systems would also help the inquisitors identify the guilty.
  • Ustalav wouldn't benefit that much, largely because it isn't united.
  • Belkzen would be even worse off. Not only is that realm chaotic, but their Rovagug inspired aversion to creation and learning would limit them greatly.
  • Many of the River Kingdoms would be interested in Technology, but wouldn't have the resources to effectively exploit it.
  • The Elves would, foolishly, ignore it, so would the Dwarves.
  • Brevoy, Cheliax, Qadira, and Taldor would benefit significantly from Technology but would suffer significant internal problems. Most of these are very "traditional" cultures, so they would likely be slow to adopt the changes. (... and the "Order of the Rack" would be of no help what so ever.)
  • Andoran would likely win this tech arms race. In addition to having a intellectual and economic resources needed, they are already in the early stages of the Industrial Revolution - a big "leg up" for turning theoretical designs into production.
  • Druma, with their mercantile philosophy, would be a wild card in this.
It is likely however, that both Cheliax and Taldor would realize the danger represented by a technologically advanced Andoran, but even then, they might not win. So, as I see it, the winner of that war (Andoran or Cheliax-Taldor) would then conquer (or at least dominate) Avistan, and would then go on to control the rest of Golarion.

I am thinking about 100 years or less. Andoran's war of national survival would greatly accelerate the assimilation of technology, regardless of the ultimate victor. :)

If Andoran won, the system wouldn't be too dissimilar from the Pact Worlds of Starfinder (Golarion would still be present, of course). A Chelish victory would result in a protracted war with the Vercites, who have developed their own technology.

The year is 1987, and NASA launches the last of America's deep space probes. In a freak mishap, Ranger 3 and its pilot, Captain William 'Buck' Rogers, are blown out of their trajectory into an orbit which freezes his life support systems, and returns Buck Rogers to Earth... Five Hundred years later..."

If I weren't running Dead Suns, I probably would have run with this angle -- with the conceit that the PCs, after cryogenic stasis, have severely atrophied in their abilities since Iron Gods, putting them with Starfinder stats at around 6th or 7th level, and the Gap explaining the changes to magic, and work with the players to make their character rebuilds.

You would need to strip them of their magic gear too.
