Back Pack= 2 bulk

General Discussion

So I was trying to fit stuff in my backpack and I was having a hard time with the limit of 2 BLK.
So 1 hygiene kit=1 BLK and 1 other 1 bulk?

This leaves very little room for anything else.

When I was 12 and in the Boy Scouts I carried a 40 pound pack which would mean 1+3=4 Bulk (IIRC the conversion) to represent my pack. And in the military their pack are often in the 100+ pound range.

So what is off the backpack and the amount it can carry or the hygiene kit or both?

MDC

Most things are L bulk, and the pack holds at least 20 L bulk items. Try keeping your hygiene kit in your starship or vehicle at the earliest opportunity. The rest of your stuff is on your web gear or on the exterior of the pack.

The backpack is clearly intended to represent a fairly small backpack. I've also carried 50 lb backpacks...but let's be honest here, those are usually encumbering.

If trying to stay at the 1/2 Str bulk limit and remain unencumbered, the 2 Bulk limit on the backpack makes a fair amount of sense. Especially since nothing prevents you from carrying 2.9 bulk in it (which would be 29 lbs) due to the 'bulk always rounds down' thing, and it weighs 1 Bulk on its own. That makes for a 39 lb backpack, that only encumbers as if it were 10 lbs lighter.

That seems believable to me.

It also means you can carry the following in a backpack:

1: 1 Hygiene Kit (1)
2: 1 Week Field Rations (1)
3: 2 changes of clothing (.2)
4: 1 Flashlight (.1)
5: 20 feet of line (.2)
6: 1 Navigator's Toolkit (.1)
7: 1 Medpatch (.1)
9: 1 Survival Knife (.1)
10: 1 Survival Flare Gun (.1)

And that, frankly, sounds about right for most of the packs I had in boy scouts. Strap the tent on the top and we're talking a total of 3.9 Bulk in carrying capacity used (and an actual weight of 4.9 Bulk).

Seems reasonable to me.

Thanks! I'm blushing here.

Hopefully, I don't make any egregious mistakes.

It's more metaphorical than literal, I admit...

Thanks
I did remember that the pack only counts if you are not wearing it.

I also did not remember that BLK rounds down.

I guess I thought it was a frame pack and not a day pack.

I could also see it just negating two BLK worth of items as well as adding to your ST.

I need my hygiene kit otherwise I will get penalties to my stealth rolls. big smile

Proper hygiene is important in space one never knows when one will find a green skinned alien of a friendly nature when exploring. Always look your best.

I don't get why hygiene kits are 1 bulk when every other kit is L bulk. Does space toothpaste, soap, and grooming equipment really weigh five to ten pounds?

Pg 167: Estimating Bulk - As a general rule, an item that weighs around 5 to 10 pounds is 1 bulk.

Liberty's Edge

I always got the impression they were a lot more comprehensive than that, I must admit.

I'm assuming the hygiene kit has the following to make the 1 bulk:
oral care: toothpaste, brush, mouthwash, tongue scraper
moist towelettes
TP
soap AND hand sanatizer
Hair Care: comb, brush, shampoo, conditioner, hair gel, ear-hair clippers, nose-hair clippers, Non-head hair grooming equipment, razor, shaving cream, Industrial Strength Hair Dryer
Nail Care: clippers, emery board, cuticle pick
Skin Care: moisturizer, callus remover, zit popper

Admittedly, I think the industrial strength hair dryer alone may be 1 bulk, but everything else would be negligible to L in comparison, so rounding down to 1 bulk seems ok.

Survival kit contents check. In them you'll find: one forty-five caliber automatic; two boxes of ammunition; four days' concentrated emergency rations; one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills; one miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible; one hundred dollars in rubles; one hundred dollars in gold; nine packs of chewing gum; one issue of prophylactics; three lipsticks; three pair of nylon stockings. Shoot, a fella' could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.

Liberty's Edge

I'm pretty sure setting-converted versions of all that would fit in a backpack, yeah. ;)

He doesn't know how to use the three seashells! *laughs uproariously*

And at most 29 light bulk items.

I do not have the skill to use 3 sea shells as I know you cannot use it unskilled.

I agree the 1 Bulk hygiene skit allows for some serious man-scaping/person-scaping/race-scaping.

Thanks

I've been looking at my bathroom while thinking about this question. Once you start adding in towels, washclothes, soap, the Q-tips and electric razors/trimmers you get a lot of volume.

I'm also looking at this as not an overnight bag, but all the items you'll need for a year long excursion to some newly discovered planet. That right there is a bulk worth of volume just in TP.

You'll shoot your @$$ out, Ralphie!

You can just lower the setting on the Pulse gauntlet, thunderstrike from 1st level. Makes wiping a breeze.

If/when I do I am sure it will provide a bonus to my PC and not a penalty.
