Non-human androids

Is it possible to play androids that look like other humanoid races? Like, elves, dwarves, kitsunes, and such? Assuming there's no statistical difference?

I have already seen a gnome android. So why not?

Thanks for all the fish, and the stimulus to remember that Marvin was a android. My unplayed android technomancer is destined to be a nihilist.

Love the Hitchicker reference but I am serious that I have GMed an android gnome.

I hope to meet your nihilist.

Per the CRB the Android is a medium humanoid. Given that the writeup for Androids states specifically that they look human. That is what I would go with, and that is how I am going to deal with androids at my table unless I see something that says otherwise.

The character was still medium sized. It just looked like a gnome.

Thanks for the reference Ezsy

Fair enough, I stand corrected.

And now my friends are recommending an android kitsune with jump jets installed in the tail.

If you want to have an Android resemble a Shirren or a Lashunta, it might be a good idea to get the Phrenic Adept archetype. That way, you can imitate their telepathy and better impersonate those species.

becareful though or they will likely get hit with the same ban hammer nonhuman Aasimar did in PFS.

Just make sure you don't try to gain (or give the appearance of trying to gain) any sort of advantage or mechanical benefit from looking other than "human". I always inform the party and GM that my character is very obviously a medium sized android and cannot be mistaken for anything but an android, even though its body has been constructed with the head of a jackal (no bite or enhanced senses or anything like that, of course; purely cosmetic).

People tried to gain advantages by being aasimar with a heritage of non-human races?

Blood of Angels wrote that other-race-aasimar exist, and use the same stat modifiers. The most obvious use of that would be making a small character without the usual strength penalty.

Oh, I see. Though, I don't think there's any benefit for Small characters in Starfinder.

Regardless, i'll make sure to reinforce that any other-race-android I play is obviously an android and has no mechanical advantage.

Traditional advantages to being small were:

  • Stealth bonus
  • Bonus to hit/AC
  • Can use a medium mount, which works better than a large mount in dungeon situations

And the classic downsides:

  • Almost every small race has a strength penalty
  • Almost every small PC race has 20ft speed

Small Aasimar and Tieflings avoided these downsides while profiting from the upsides. I'm having trouble finding those advantages in Starfinder though.

All androids are non-human ;)

But in all serious it should be possible to play an Android who doesn't have the normal humanoid shape, or to resemble humanoid races other than Human.

But you shouldn't benefit mechanically in any way from it, just cosmetically.

In Starfinder, there aren't even any real benefits (or penalties) to being small instead of medium size.

The removed the inherent speed penalties, the stealth bonus, the bonus to hit/AC, etc. So it shouldn't really be an issue in Starfinder.

I you really want to play freakshow body shapes, there's always Eclipse Phase...

Yeah, the Android write-up in the CRB says that although most Androids are built to resemble Humans, there exist those who were built, or later customized themselves, to look like other races. It also says those are rare, is all. One of the Threats entry in the Settings chapter mentions a fleet of Androids who replace their faces with featureless red plates, as well, so there's precedent for this stuff in the lore.

I'm playing through Incident at Absalom Station as an Android whose production was rushed (due to Backstory,) such that they look more mechanical and "robotic," with visible muscle cording and internal wiring. (Yes, I really wanted to play an Eberron-style Warforged in Space :D)
