New to society play, not new to GMing....questions

Starfinder Society

Pathfinder Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Sent a similar email to customer service, but thought I'd try on here as well.

So, I recently picked up Starfinder from Gencon, and am interested in running society games with my usual basement game group (Myself and one other player trade off GM duties). I have a few questions, just to make sure I'm correct on how this all works, I'm having a somewhat difficult time understanding some of the society manual.

1. Am I understanding correctly that provided all the rules and regulations are followed, it's permitted to run a society game at home, ie. it doesn't have to be a public event at a game shop or other venue?

2. Do all of us involved, that is myself (the GM) and each player need to have an account, along with properly registered characters (Either pre-made or following standard level 1 character generation point buy rules)?

3. Despite not being a public "event", will all sessions will be reported as "events' to contribute to the advancement of the story line?

4. If players want to use the same character for the majority of the "Dead suns" adventure, should we take care not to accidentally out-level the content? I notice that there's the guideline of roughly 1 XP per scenario, and 3 XP per adventure path. The "Into the unknown" free content has 5 individual scenarios which would put characters on the cusp of hitting level 3, close to making them inelligible for the first book of "dead suns", if I understand correctly. On the other hand, since book 2 is designed for levels 3-4, am i understanding that they should actually also do some extra scenarios outside of this (Once they have their chronicle sheets of course), in order to get the required XP for them to be elligible for the second book?

Thanks for any information that you might have, or any other easily missed "Important things". Again, I'm one of two designated GMs in my group, and I'd really like to be able to do this with them, if possible.

1. Exactly correct. You just need to make sure to give Chronicles and report the results.

2. Yes.

3. Yes.

4. When playing in Campaign mode, the easiest way is to use the guidelines at the front of the module that say approximately what level they should be at milestones in the story. If using PFS characters, they will not level up until the module is completed, due to the way chronicle sheets and XP work.

5/5 5/55/55/5

1) correct

2) they have to be legal. They don't NEED to be registered but it would be nice.

Lets say you have Bob the fighter, Daimion the cleric, Sneaky the rogue and Bill the wizard.

The other group has Oab the fighter, Kneely the cleric, Squeeky the rogue and Bubba the awakened T rex with 9 wishes per day.

Even though Kneely the cleric is himself just as legal as damion, kneely has kind of an unfair advantage here of full gold and prestige from adventuring with Bubba , even if he doesn't have +5 to all of his stats from Bubba chain casting wishes for him as they adventure. Thats why everyone playing at the table needs to be legal, not just the folks that are going to play elsewhere.

3) 99.44% sure thats a Eyup

4) Yes. Going slow might be an option there. (voluntarily take half gold half pp and half experience)

1. You are permitted to run a Society game at home (or online, even.)

2. All participants need a Roleplaying Guild ID, however, you can download ID #s to distribute for the group. It's encouraged, but not required that they register online.

All players in a sanctioned / reported game need legal characters (pregens or characters that follow the character creation rules in the Starfinder Society Roleplaying Guild Guide. The exception is if you play the Adventure Path in "Campaign Mode." There's a guide for running in Campaign Mode Here.

The GM is required to have an ID, but doesn't immediately need a legal character to apply credit to.

3. Private events are reported. It should be noted that a majority of scenarios are independent of each other; some player actions may carry over later, but are usually subtle.

4. Into the Unknown is only worth 1 XP maximum when applied to a character, whether you complete one of the quests or all five. The rewards (credits, Fame, boons) are greater for completing more of the quests, however. Completing "Into the Unknown", SFS #1-01 "Comencement, Incident at Absalom (sanctioned content) would put the players one scenario shy of third level.

It should be noted that it's going to be impossible to level a Society character by the APs alone. One thing you *could* do is play the Dead Suns adventure in "campaign mode", and apply the credit to "Society" characters.

Thank you for that clarification. I totally misread the chronicle sheet at the end of Into the unknown. So the breakdown would be

Comencement (1XP plus reward)
Into the Unknown (1XP plus increasing other rewards depending on how many completed)
Incident at Absalom (3XP, plus rewards)

Putting them at level 2, with 2XP, 1 shy of level 3.

Then to get them to level 3, in order to play "Temple of the Twelve", I could use "Fugitive on the red planet" and/or "Yesteryear's Truth", correct?

Correct.

Thanks. One last question.

At the beginning of commencement, there is a summary of the Scoured Stars Incident. Does this get read to the players, or is this GM knowledge only? I'm assuming that players don't go into this universe completely blind....having just graduated and receiving their initiating assignments, I assume they know why the society is so short staffed?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I believe the NPC dialog sums it up a little. I had the NPCs take off their hat and hold it over their variously placed hearts at various points in the speech.

The Scoured Stars incident is also mentioned in the Organized Play guide on page 43 and 44.

This is a resource available to players, so I'd suggest that they read at least those two pages to get some more background information.

Ah, well that Scoured Stars question...it's sort of up to you (but don't read the whole thing because it contains plot spoilers) but as others have pointed out, it's not meant to be read aloud. I personally give them a poetic summary of past events.

Whats the rules on replaying a game's with different characters?

Pathfinder Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Per the organized play rules on pages 8-9 of the society play guide, you may repeat a scenario in society play under the following 3 situations

1. The adventure has the repeatable tag, and you do not already have a chronicle sheet for that adventure for your chosen character.

2. You have earned the replay as a GM perk

3. You are there to bring a table up to minimum size, and you inform the GM that you are a repeater, since they may or may not be comfortable with this. There must also be absolutely no spoilers for the rest of the party. This is is the only exception to having more than one chronicle sheet for the same adventure on the same character, and you do not gain the rewards of the chronicle sheet a second time,

Great, I will replay one with another character. Thanks

Sorry to jump in on this thread like this but, IAM new to society play and are reading the guides but I would like a more experienced society member to help, I contacted my local agent I believe the term was, but I thought I might jump in a thread to better my chances with these questions my town has gotten it's first stable comic/gaming venue and I have been running mini Pathfinder games there to teach Newcomers and I thought maybe society play would be more structured and enjoyable for the patrons. On top of that I thought instead of jumping into the vastness that is Pathfinder society that I might try to start in starfinder society so that IAM not overwhelmed.

Welcome to Organized Play, Modednerd! Did you have specific questions?

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/55/55/55/5 **** Venture-Captain, Minnesota

PFS and Starfinder Society are wonderful structures to build a gaming community around!

Are you looking for general advice on how to start organizing? Because if you are, we’re here for you! Here are some questions that I have for you before we get started:

1) How big is your venue? How many tables do you have available for playing?

2) What is your relationship with the venue? Do you know the main staff by name? If you don’t, now is the time to get to know them!

3) Have you had any return players from your previous mini games?

4) I see you’ve contacted your local venture agent... That is awesome! They can also help you get running.

Hmm

@Adder007USA,

I would suggest you play at least one other scenario before starting Incident at Absalom Station. That would bring the characters up to 2nd level.

The end boss fight is extremely challenging with just first level characters.

For Starfinder Society you can still replay those there adventures even if you went through Incident at 2nd level. It doesn’t have the restriction that Pathfinder Society has about playing only once at 2nd level.

@Modednerd,

Welcome and good luck with starting up as an event host. As HMM said above, having a good relationship with the store that is hosting you is vital. You can help this along in a few ways:
* Make sure your group always cleans up the area you play in —putting tables and chairs back in place and making sure there is no litter
* There is a retail incentive program (scroll down on the page) that you may want to consider. At the location I host, any product bought (snack, comic book, gaming material) regardless of who produces it is a qualifying purchase. Please check with the Venture Captain for your area, some places are more restrictive as to what qualifies.
* Once you get it started, encourage others to GM as well. That will help prevent you from burning out.

Good luck to both of you!

1. Medium to large, 27 table's that are combined long ways in 3s

2.semi personal and yes; I believe one of the staff would like to join

3.i have a strong repeating 5 players

And to the other kind person helping me we are usually the last people in the store and we help them close taking out trash and other tasks.
And thank you one of the co owners and I are working on this together about information and rules that need to be in place and one of my players is one of my gms in 5e so we usually trade places,IAM involved wether going or playing in 4 games I love it more then anything else

And what other scenarios could I run other then the Absalom station or are you saying to rerun the first part to level them up for the last part, I was thinking of using the pre made iconic heros like it recommend or should I start with them making registered characters and I was going to hold off to the holding off society numbers.

I am saying starting with Into the Unknown and The Commencement make great starting scenarios. Wait to run Incident at Absalom Station until you have some players with second level characters.

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/55/55/55/5 **** Venture-Captain, Minnesota

27 tables? Wow, that means you have room to expand. Recruiting and training GMs is going to be a big priority as you move forward. Tell people, “Hey, you’re great with the game. You know the rules and welcome newcomers. Have you considered being a GM? I think you’d be great! “ Do the ask. They may not agree the first time you do it, but they may agree later. The more your players see other GMs step up, the more likely they will too.

You want lots of casual GMs, so that you can have games going at different levels of play, and so that you can have breaks sometimes.

It is fine to have people play the pre-gen characters to start with, but you will want to get them numbers and chronicles for the games they play. They can then apply the credit from those scenarios to the character they create.

You need to read and understand the material in the Guide, especially the parts about apply credit to characters. As the host, you will need to explain this to others.
