Rules Questions

In incident at absolom station the crew will acquire a tier 3 ship. My question is when can they upgrade. As first level characters and the ship being tier 3 do they have to match the tier in level or can they upgrade as they wish?

Pathfinder Maps, Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Maps, Starfinder Roleplaying Game, Starfinder Society Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

I would assume no upgrade until the average party level reaches 4 or higher.

Without spoiling anything too specific, I promise this won't be an issue.

I am running the game so be specific I want to plan ahead...why wont this be an issue?

Don't read this next bit if you're planning to play in Dead Suns (obviously).

Spoiler:
The characters don't gain their ship until the end of book 1, at roughly the same time they should hit 3rd level. If this isn't the case then they will hit 3rd level within 1 or 2 encounters at the beginning of book 2, though I recommend just giving them the required amount of XP at the end of book 1

But the PC's gain Build points each level..thus at third level do they have saved points to spend..I can't find in the core book where this falls. Knowing my players as I do when they get their ship they will want to spend accrued points from level 1-3 on their new ship..my question still stands. Do they or do they not accrue build points prior to getting the ship.

Yes, they accrue the build points.

If their accrued build points is greater than the ship's build points when they get it, then they can modify the ship. If their accrued build points equal the bp of the ship, they can't modify it. If their accrued build points are less than the ship's bp, then they continue to accrue as they level up, but can't modify the ship until they gain enough accrued points to exceed the ship's BP. If they want to modify it before then, they'll have to modify it to remove enough BP to match their accrued bp.

It's no different than getting a +1 sword at 1st level. You can either use it as is, or sell it and buy things that are level appropriate, but you can't pool up more gold to add another +1 to it at 2nd level.

Yes, they always have access to the amount of BP that coincides with their APL. It would be the same as starting a game at 3rd level, the PCs won't have a tier 1 ship. They probably won't be able to customize the ship immediately and I assume, though I have not verified this, that the layout for the tier 3 ship is using the max BP available. Bit unrelated but maybe ask them to build their ideal tier 3 ship using the appropriate frame and just change the stats on the ship? Unless you're gonna let them just customize it in Absalom Station right away in which case I wouldn't bother too much.

Ok ..still not making sense..so the party reaches level 3 AND gains the sun rise maiden a tier 3 ship. assuming 4 players at third level how many points will they have to modify the ship with AND can they modify it past tier 3 as you can a piece of equipment. I have read over those rules multiple times and brought several members on my old group and all of us read it differently..so...

The tier of the ship is equal to the APL, so if you have a party of level 3 characters the APL is 3 so the ship is tier 3. This means you have 95 BP to work with, and you can buy as much as you want with that as long as you have all the essential parts of the ship. The gaining of the ship is independent to leveling up, though it's likely to happen at roughly the same time.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It's simple.

1st level group finds a tier 3 ship. A 1st level group has 55 build points. The tier 3 ship is 95 bp.

55 is less than 95, so the group can't make any modifications to the ship as it's more expensive than their BP. If they do make modifications, they have to rebuild the ship so that it costs 55. Meaning they'd be selling off bits of the ship to afford the thing they want. They can continue to use the ship as is, but can't modify it.

At level 2, their BP goes up to 75. 75 is less than 95, so they still can't make modifications to the ship unless they sell off 20 BP worth of equipment and bring the ship down to BP 75. They can continue to use the ship as is, but can't modify it.

At level 3, their BP goes up to 95. 95 is equal to 95, so they can make modifications to the ship, as long as the BP total is 95 at the end.

At level 4, their BP goes up to 115, and they can add 20 BP to the ship equipment.

You seem to be thinking of the ship as free BP added to their BP total, it isn't. BP just represents the maximum they can get in a ship on their own. If they find a higher tier ship, they can use it as is, but can't add it to their BP total. If you capture three tier 3 ships, you don't suddenly gain 285 BP toward your ship. You just have 3 ships you can sell for money.

Thats what I was looking for. I have several in my group that want to argue over this.
