But it seems combat situational awareness is not one of them.

Perception is NOT a class skill for the modern soldier? I really am curious to the reasoning on that?

somethingsomething GAME BALANCE somethingsomething?

Soldier and (Even more troublingly) Mechanic are a bit short on class skills compared to the others.

Mechanic has it worse though as it's very possible that a mechanic can end up with no class skills level to choose (Being int based and only having 8 class skills)

So? You can put skill ranks and even max out non-class skills just fine.

If you're really pushed for more class skills, remember themes give a class skill each, and Themeless gives any chosen skill as a class skill!

Also Skill Synergy gives two class skills, and given the number of feats the solider gains, currently I wouldn't have an issue with grabbing it.

A combat class with a short skill list? I am shocked...SHOCKED I say!

Considering Soldier is one of two classes that is a good sniper by default without needing a lot of feats, and considering Soldier seems to feel more like a blend of Fighter and Ranger, it is a bit odd that their training doesn't then allow them to see good.

That said, it is pretty easy to work around this - as Alfray mentioned, feats and themes can give you class skills for free.

Oh I know it is possible to get around. I did it on my Android Soldier. But IMO after they went on in the preview about how Soldiers benefited from better teaching techniques and technology and how every soldier past and present I know has had situational awareness burned into their brains, I was really expecting Soldiers to have perception in and find it supersizing they don't.

Having to burn a feat or take the themeless theme does not, to me, seem right to address the issue.

As it turns out my SF GM has one house rule: Everyone gets max ranks in Perception so for my home game this won't be a huge problem.

And exept for this one oversite I think soldiers got appropriate amounts sna selection of class skills.

But if they get Medicine in class why not Perception.

Exactly Gilfalas.

"Head on a swivel soldier!"

Nothing gets more training time than situational awareness for combat soldiers. In boot camp they get a lot of focus on physical fitness and following orders but once they move to their duty station it's all about staying sharp.

Exactly. The bonus feats ARE a Soldier class feature. A very dynamic one as well. :)

This is the problem with Starfinder. Still the same old dumb hand me downs from previous editions have sneaked into this. What a chance to redo so much stuff the right way.

The only different between a class skill and a non-class skill is the +3 you get when you add your first rank to the skill. So for the price of a feat (which Soldiers have a lot of) you can have the same +3.

Not perfect, but combine that and that they get 4 skills per level instead of 2, and I think Soldiers are better than they were in PF.

The right way to you.
