Myrmidarch and Sigilus Spellstrike Progression

Rules Questions

First time poster here.

I'm theorycrafting a magus with the myrmidarch and sigilus archetypes and have run into a bit of problem as far as (ranged) spellstrike is concerned:
"At 4th level, a myrmidarch can use spellstrike to cast a single-target touch attack ranged spell and deliver it through a ranged weapon attack. [...]"

However, sigilus replaces spellstrike. I can see this parsed in three ways:
1) Ranged spellstrike is an entirely seperate ability. You can't deliver spells with melee attacks, but ranged ones work the way as described (one at 4th and full-attack at 11th).
2) Ranged spellstrike requires spellstrike. Thus, this archetype combination can't use ranged spellstrike.
3) Ranged spellstrike is an ability that improves spellstrike. Thus, the usual queuing is applied: Spellstrike (vanilla/melee) at 4th level, Ranged spellstrike (one attack) at 11th level, never gain the ability to full-attack with ranged spellstrike.

The way ranged spellstrike is worded, I'm inclined to see it as an improvement of the regular spellstrike (option 3). I guess I'm just not sure whether the queuing rule also applies to improvements gained from an archetype or not.

Also, if anyone wonders whether the combination would be broken if option 3 was used to regain regular spellstrike: Sigilus trades spellstrike for the very mixed bag of only taking -1 to spell combat with one school, but -4 with all other schools and outright inability to use it with two opposition schools (as per Thassilonian Specialist, meaning there is almost always at least one school that would be nice to use with spell combat that you simply can't). It takes 10 minutes to inscribe a rune, so this prevents in combat shenanigans.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

'At 4th level, a myrmidarch can use spellstrike to cast a single-target touch attack ranged spell and deliver it through a ranged weapon attack. '

'Inscribe Rune ... This ability replaces spellstrike.'

RAW they're pretty incompatible I think. Option 2.

As to whether it'd be broken to allow your option 3 - no. The sigilus is a very weak archetype. Even if it was free and traded out nothing I wouldn't use Inscribe Rune very often.

Thanks avr.
I guess it boils down to that RAW, Ranged spellstrike lacks wording along the lines of 'At 4th level, the myrmidarch's ability to use spellstrike improves. He can use it to cast a single...', which would make it clear that it's meant as an improvement. I've come across such omission occasionally and it's always bugging me: the Wand Dancer feat allows you to move before and after using a spell trigger item, so long as you move at leat 5 feet before and after, and no more than your speed. While this is probably supposed to be Spring Attack for wands and staves (activating as a standard action and splitting your move action, so technically a full-round action), since it doesn't specifiy an action to use it, RAW this allows a staff magus with the wand wielder arcana to abuse it to gain free movement up to his speed when using spell combat.

And yes, Inscribe Rune is rather weak and I was more interested in the Inscribe Sihedron ability gained from replacing Medium and Heavy armor anyway, but if you have a favored school (such as evocation for shocking grasp magi) and just need that one more point to hit a bit more reliably, it can be useful.
