just how much trouble would it be to make parts of minis more interchangable?

A good example of a missed opportunity is the Reclamation Cavalry and Reclamation Sky. The riders are nearly interchangable.
if a wee bit more attention/effort had gone into it the torsos would have been perfectly interchangable.

Since you are working with digital renders I wonder if this is on purpose or if it just never ocurred to the designers.

The very first PFB set had an "Ice Giant" with two interchangable arms (axe & sword).

After that - nothing.
I think it's both cheaper & not what the PFB series is aiming for, even if i would like it to be.

Wizkids is kinda doing it over in the D&D line, where some minis use the same body, but different limbs for variant versions.

Grand Lodge

Adventure Path Charter Subscriber; Pathfinder Starfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

Use Lego mini-figures. Completely interchangeable.

There is a Kick Starter right now with magnetic parts for figures.

I can understand not having extra parts, but with a series like the Reclamation Knights...

as a lazy engineer I'd have expected easy interchangeably of body parts.

Hand of Glory: Modular Magnetic Gaming Miniatures

It's in Kickstarter with 18 days to go. Good to check out.

I think this will be a start of more and better designs to come later, I hope.

That's whole level further than what I was thinking about. It looks quite interesting but since I don't paint minis it would cost me a fortune to get them painted.

When you take wizkids minis apart at the joints you'll notice the juctions have different shapes.
For example:
Reclamation Knight has rectangle peg/hole to keep the rider on the horse*
Reclamation Sky has a 'D' shape peg/hole to keep the rider on the hippogriff**

Lazy design would have been one shape for one purpose, on all minitures.

*and the torso on the legs, with another size rectangle
** and is a single piece torso+legs
