Community Use

Hey,

Not really PACG, but it is definitely home brew related:

So I have been making cards for my own use to reference monsters stats. Just makes life easier. I either use my bestiaries or the OGL site to get the stats and verbage for them.

The card template is roughly based off of the monster cards used in PACG with a bunch of extra information and design added.

I fully know and comply with not selling any of my work. So far I have just done it for myself. But I was thinking of selling some of my mini's on Ebay and wanted to know if I could add a stat card for the mini for free. I do not intend on charging more for a mini with a card, just thought it would be a nice addition for anyone who bought the mini.

That being said I know I can make my own cards, not use any of the artwork from the Community Use package but I love the idea of having the cards logo's match up with the mini's themselves. For example a Pathfinder logo in the upper left and the Adventure Path logo in the upper right and a numbered card like 1/47

This is what I have been doing for myself anyways. If using the logo's is a no go I'll probably just make a more generic card without them but it looks much better with them.

Second question:
Since I have only been using them for myself I have been slapping whatever picture I want on the card but if I was to make it for others I wanted to formalize them. Are the 3d renders you see on sites like www.pathfinderminis.com considered Public Domain? those would work great, otherwise I'll just take a picture of my own mini's and place them in the frame.

*I posted a similar question in the customer service area but then thought this was a better spot to find knowledgeable people on if this has been allowed before or if it could be allowed now. Thanks in advance

I'm 99.99999% sure that including anything that is made using the card creator in a product that you sell would be a violation of the Community Use license. I would highly recommend you do not do this.

Not made in a card creator. Only using logos from the community use package and some creature type logos I got online. Either way I know I can use what I have without the logos, it is all information found in the OGL site. Would rather stay in line with the rules either way, and if I can use the logos the community use stamp gets slapped on it to point people here for more business towards Paizo.

If buying the mini is the only way to get the stat card, then that is for sure not allowed under the CUP: "you cannot sell or otherwise charge anyone for access to content used under this Policy."

Even if the card is "free", the person needs to pay in order to gain access to the card. That is a no-go.

Now, if you also gave the card away for free in addition to bundling it with a mini, that is more of a grey area. Hire a lawyer to see if they think that would fly by the text of the license, or ask Paizo for express written permission that goes above-and-beyond the CUP. Or take the path of least resistance and just don't use any of Paizo's marks, etc. (and therefore don't use the CUP in any form).

If you're using the OGL for the stat cards, you'll have enough text to cram on that card anyway...

Well I have no problems posting a pdf for someone to print their own, if I do make them look nicer already planned on posting them here if I figure out how. But I am not going to pay shipping for people to get the cards printed and laminated from my house lol

I am already starting with the no Paizo marks, but pains me if I can't use the fantastic logos already made in the CUP.

the cards I use are front and back, and yes. Lots of text to go around lol

On a similar note, it is not clear to me at all how the blog artwork interacts with custom cards. I think we agree that you can not put them on cards on drivethru since they are for sale there, but what if I make a card on drivethru, make a screenshot, and turn that screenshot into a pdf I distribute for free, instead of submitting the card?
That should be fine, right?

Got an answer from Vic on the use of the renders. No go. I'm good with that. Probably means the logos will be a no go as well except in releasing them here for community use. Will do that if I am happy with the way they turn out. Thanks for the input peeps.

It was stated here that the blog art, as outlined in the cup, was usable on DriveThru. (See Vic's affirmation below that post.)

So no, need to go through all those hurdles.
