Is it okay to skip a scenario that is too hard and just keep going with the adventure?

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game General Discussion

I have been really enjoying this game and always thinking to myself how amazing it is that they could balance a system and rules that are so complicated. A lot of my solo adventures with three characters come down to 5 or less blessings left in the pile.

Last night I started the scenario Bizarre Love Triangle in adventure deck 3. I encountered one of the three villains very early in the game which is usually great because it closes a location early and gets rid of a stack of cards (preserving the blessing pile). I easily defeated the snake villain using Survival with Lini. Only then did I really start reading carefully and realize how hard this scenario is. Even though defeated, since there obviously was not two other villains in the stack, the snake was undefeated. I had to burn 4 blessings from the pile and the villain escaped into 1 of 5 locations, including possibility the location he came from.

I started running the numbers in my head, the scenario is nearly impossible. The only way to close a location is to manually work through the entire stack in every location, which you normally can't do in 30 turns, let alone each time you see a villain you burn 3-5 blessings.

I packed everything up and called it a night, it was a bit depressing. Should I skip this scenario, skip the rewards and just move on to the next?

Thanks for your time.

Did you read the FAQ on this one? They changed it so that the Villains sort-of-escape instead of being undefeated when they're not all in the same deck, so you still close the location, take Blessings from the box, and so on.

Otherwise, it's your game. You can skip whatever you want. :)

First, you should probably note this FAQ:

"Bizarre Love Triangle has issues. Are you supposed to close the villain's location when you defeat it, even if it's undefeated?

The villain shouldn't be undefeated. You are supposed to close the location, and if it escapes after you defeat it, any blessings you use should come from the box, not the blessings deck.

Resolution: On the scenario Bizarre Love Triangle, replace the During this Scenario text with the following:

If a villain cannot escape to an open location, shuffle the villain into a random location, opening it.

To win the scenario, defeat any villain while all three villains are in the same location deck."

To your question, in the thread title: yes, it's "OK" to skip scenario, since it's your game, and first and foremost you should be having fun with it. Is it *allowed* by the rules, though - definitely not.

Please note that the Scenario was FAQed

and that thread

On the scenario Bizarre Love Triangle, replace the "During this scenario" text with the following:
"If a villain cannot escape to an open location, shuffle the villain into a random location, opening it.
To win the scenario, defeat any villain while all three villains are in the same location deck."

Aaaahhhgggg double ninja'ed by the veterans while I was looking for links :-)

Ahh!!! This updated rule makes way more sense and turns an impossible situation into something that may actually be fun. Thanks for showing me this new rule!

Yeah, read through the rest of the FAQ as well; quite a few cards and rules received errata.

Good idea, I am reading through the entire FAQ now. I feel like the FAQ should actually be a page titled as official rule changes or something other than FAQ. Frequently asked questions has it's place but this page almost seems like entire rule changes agreed by the developers. At least as a beginner to the game it seems like the FAQ is super important.

True enough. Especially given how a lot of the "Frequently Asking Questions seem to be things that no one thought of asking before the dev noticed the error and posted the FAQ...

Sometimes they are questions we ask ourselves literally the day after we get the set printed.

If you ever do skip a scenario, I wouldn't skip the rewards. They're too important. I'd count the scenario as "won" and move on.

For the first time ever (after 5 full campaigns), we're about to skip a scenario ourselves: Nocticula's Attention (4-3) from WoTR.* Some scenarios are nearly impossible with higher player counts and/or parties that happen to be low on a particular skill. This is one of those scenarios.

We'll try 2-3 times before giving up (failed once already) - and it'll be fun doing so - but it's extremely unlikely that we'll win. Anyway, it'll be just as fun when we throw in the towel and move on. :)

*Per the designer's suggestion, we're using WoTR as "Adventure 7" for a party that's already completed a full campaign. It's neat, but painful without mythic paths. As it should be.

I'm still holding out for those Skull & Shackles Errata cards. I've got a reminder set to ask about them again in November. :)

I'm going to beat you to it and ask in October.... :)

I'm going to be starting AP3 soon and I already bought the cards for the Season of the Shackles so I would love to stop having to write on my cards or consult an FAQ...

Especially the card writing thing. I make myself do it so I can tell myself that its NOT a collectable card game and the game is more important than the cards but MAN it hurts each time... :)
