It occurred to us that we may have never boosted the Blog of Rogue Genius Games' publisher and Lead Genius, Owen K.C. Stephens. (You may actually have heard his name in context of other game companies rather than us, and that's fine).

There's a LOT of game content and industry-related articles on that blog, including things that sometimes make their way into our products.

And, of course it's free! (Though you can always back his Patreon if you want to support him for a few dollars a month, and apparently there's at least a LITTLE exclusive content now being added for patreons, though that seems to be limited to a single item just put up today, so far).

And obviously Owen spends a fair amount of time looking at these boards, so if you want to engage with him wearing this Third-Party-Publisher hat, this is a good place to do it!

Although so are Facebook and Twitter, if you are in to such things. :)

Heh.
And since it is likely to come up, yes, my blog is Published Under the OGL.

Hmm. That name does seem oddly familiar, but I just can't quite place it...

Wait—I know... Is he related to Lisa Stephens?

Common misconception!

But no.

They DID both worth at Wizards of the Coast at the same time, though!

Never heard of the man. And I certainly also don't own dozens of products that have his name on the title.

Ok, I'm lying. And thank you for reminding me about the blog. Seems familiar so I might have already read some entries in the past, but I totally forgot about it in the meantime.

That's fair, my blog posting history proves that every once in a while I forget about it!

It's a problem I generally have, there are too many interesting rpg-related products out there, and I can't afford to buy and read them all. Same with RPG related blogs. I just don't have the time to read everything I find interesting. So most of the time, I start to read something more intensively until I get distracted by something else.

Have they ever been seen in the same room together?

Are they both aspects of Shyka?

Heck we were in the same room last *week*.

AND we have witnesses.

And while MOSTLY the fact Lisa and I both worked at Wizards of the Coast at the same time, and I guess now both work at Paizo at the same time, is a coincidence, there is certainly some arguable cause-and-affect, since that means Lisa knows who the heck I am, and we've both been in the industry since the last century.

I get mail for Gwen Stephens sometimes, which I presume is a result of a misattribution that happened once, and got copied onto a mailing list.

New post, on a new kind of paladin mercy option.

Also, it seems worth noting that I am a Dream Date, for the ENnies, at Gen Con this year.
If you win, you will meet up at the cocktail reception starting at 6:30pm and sit with him during the 2017 ENnie Awards ceremony taking place at Gen Con on Friday, August 18th, at 8:00pm in the Grand Ballroom of Union Station.
You will also receive swag!
(I do not yet know what swag I come with, but I promise, there *will* be something. :) )
Plus, I come with free local pickup!

Cool. Hmmm, might use these, but questions!

Final Mercy (Ex) wrote:
The harsh reality of battle is, sometimes there is nothing a paladin can offer but a swift death. A paladin with this mercy can perform a coup de grace as a move action using a use of his mercy* ability, and deals additional damage equal to his lay on hands dice. These additional dice are not multiplied by the weapon’s critical damage multiplier. If slain, the target is affected by sanctify corpse, but it gains no other lay on hands ability**.

* was this supposed to be LoH ability?

** could this be cut if the first * read as "by expending a use of Lay on Hands"?

You only get to use your mercy when you LoH, but you still need the second section, because normally all mercies stack.

But you're not using Lay on Hands though, you're just expending a use of it. Such as the Radiant Charge Feat.

Benefit wrote:
When you hit with a charge attack, you can expend all of your remaining uses of lay on hands to deal extra damage equal to 1d6 per use of lay on hands expended + your Charisma bonus. This damage comes from holy power and is not subject to damage reduction, energy immunities, or energy resistances.

My apologies for bugging ya, I just think it's a really neat ability.

That's a key decision a designer or developer has to make when describing abilities. Do I HAVE to say you don;t get the benefits of other mercies since you are't actually using lay on hands? Or does doing so raise weird questions, because people already assume that?

Honestly space, page count, and precedent are often as major deciding factors as any instinct for how the gaming public will react to a specific wording.

And when it so far only exists in electronic format I don't worry that much, since anyone who sees it can just ask me what it means. :)

Often ideas need to be expressed in small ways to see how people like them before it makes sense to do a lot with the idea. :)

Yeah, hmm... I'm kinda torn on the value such a product line would have for me. Normally, combat is the least interesting part of roleplaying games to me, so products that focus on combat tactics are normally not what I crave for. On the other hand, this short article already showed me things I probably would never have though off myself, because I normally spend my time on other aspects of the game.

So a product, that would explain such tactics, gave me rules options to better use them (especially those that are not in the core rules) and maybe even provided me with ready monster statblocks containing those rules options so that I could plug 'n'play them into my game would actually interest me very much.

Oh I liked the article on tactics, I just Hmmed cause Ogres :3

That being said, I would like articles more about actual monster tactics, rather than Feat swapping suggestions. Basically, what does this monster do that warrants it over any other at this point in time?

Thanks folks, both of those are useful feedback as I ponder this one.

I'm not disagreeing. To me, feat suggestions have the additional benefit that if something is not in the CRB, chances are that I've never seen it before, because I actually avoid reading rules stuff just for the fun of it, when there's so much adventures and setting books that I prefer reading. And the steady influx of awesome Paizo and 3PP material ensures, that I'm totally way behind reading anyways. From the article, Crowd Control and Desperate Battler are pretty good examples of feats I've never seen before even when I own both products they are contained within. There's an awful lot of options I don't explore when a player doesn't want to use them, so to get pointed at those options can be a tremendous help for my GMing

And we're only talking Paizo stuff so far. I just took a short look in the download section here and at drivethru and from SGG/RGG alone I own around 300 pdfs (and I still totally plan to include all (most of ^^) the Guide classes to my homebrew :D). That's a lot of stuff (including feats) that may or may not be (re-)usable in such a context.

Which reminds me that I really need to continue cataloguing my pdfs just to find out what I already have :D

Well, and in the meantime, Owen made me already think about combining "whip wield" with two-weapon-fighting (or better yet, doing something with it and tentacled monsters :D
