Small character, Medium Weapon

Rules Questions

I had a session today and got a new weapon, a Masterwork Shortsword. Problem is, my character is a Gnome and the sword is medium sized. What's the penalty for a character using a weapon that's one size too big? Is there a spell that can shrink a weapon down a size?

Inappropriately Sized Weapons: A creature can’t make optimum use of a weapon that isn’t properly sized for it. A cumulative –2 penalty applies on attack rolls for each size category of difference between the size of its intended wielder and the size of its actual wielder. If the creature isn’t proficient with the weapon, a –4 nonproficiency penalty also applies.

What I want to know is the Craft DC/formula to turn said Medium shortsword into a Small longsword.

Here is a longer slice from the section that CKent83 quoted.

Inappropriately Sized Weapons: A creature can't make optimum use of a weapon that isn't properly sized for it. A cumulative –2 penalty applies on attack rolls for each size category of difference between the size of its intended wielder and the size of its actual wielder. If the creature isn't proficient with the weapon, a –4 nonproficiency penalty also applies.

The measure of how much effort it takes to use a weapon (whether the weapon is designated as a light, one-handed, or two-handed weapon for a particular wielder) is altered by one step for each size category of difference between the wielder's size and the size of the creature for which the weapon was designed. For example, a Small creature would wield a Medium one-handed weapon as a two-handed weapon. If a weapon's designation would be changed to something other than light, one-handed, or two-handed by this alteration, the creature can't wield the weapon at all.

So you would take a -2 penalty on attack rolls, and the shortsword would be a one-handed weapon for you rather then a light weapon.

-2, got it. Can a weapon be crafted smaller like that? And still be mastercraft? She is proficient with longswords. I also got a masterwork hammer that's her size, but she's not proficient with it. So either way, there's a penalty.

Here are a few options for addressing the problem.

(1) Sell the sword and use the money to buy a properly sized but otherwise identical item.

(2) Hand the sword to someone or set it down, use Enlarge Person (potion, spell, etc.) on yourself, then pick the sword back up. Now you are the right size for the sword.

(3) Add the Resizing Special Ability to the sword. You would have to add an Enhancement Bonus of at least +1 before doing so.

I'm not entirely sure what you are asking here. If you are asking whether weapons sized for small characters can be masterwork, then the answer is yes.

Don't have the gold for the Resizing as of yet. But I think I can afford a small one.

I figured. That's why I listed that option last. The most straightforward solution is to sell the sword and use the money to buy a properly-sized masterwork weapon.

I think I'll do that. I have a masterwork crossbow I'm also selling since I'm not proficient with it either and do have a decent shortbow already.

Scarab Sages

Just out of curiosity, what class are you? I can't think of anything in the game that is proficient in short swords but not proficient with crossbows.

I'm a bard. I am proficient with light armor, shields, all simple weapons, plus the longsword, rapier, sap, shortsword, shortbow, and whip. And the crossbow in question is a hand crossbow, an exotic weapon.

And crossbows are simple weapons ^^

I edited my comment to include the fact that said crossbow was a hand crossbow, an exotic weapon.

Ah, I missed that.

Anyway, selling two masterwork weapons you don't need will net you enough money to by that small masterwork weapon you do need.

It definitely should. I might be able to buy a masterwork buckler shield too.

The medium masterwork shortsword and masterwork hand crossbow have been sold! I have bought a small masterwork shortsword, masterwork shortbow, and masterwork buckler shield.
