Masterwork composite longbow ( Strength +1) as an arcane bond weapon

Rules Questions

Can a wizard choose a masterwork Composite longbow (strength +1) as their arcane bond weapon?

Dark Archive

Yes.

"Objects that are the subject of an arcane bond must fall into one of the following categories: amulet, ring, staff, wand, or weapon. These objects are always masterwork quality.

But the wizard wouldn't be proficient with it unless he took the Martial Weapon Proficiency (longbow) feat.

It's a pretty strong option for an eldritch archer magus.

Or has the proficiency by race like an Elf...

So is a revolver.

Any bonded item that you must hold in your hand will limit you somewhere down the road. No metamagic rods for you!

Isn't the wizard allowed to cast (without penalty) with both hands occupied as long as one hand is holding the bonded object?

Wait until you see a battle host occultist start with a masterwork firearm or hellknight plate at lv1.

Which has nothing to do with "No metamagic rods for you!"

EDIT: on re-read, I see your point, though Jeraa's point below seems to contradict that in the general case.

I see nothing in the description of the arcane bond, the magic chapter, or the FAQ that would indicate this. So unless I missed something, you still need a free hand for the material and somatic components.

Edit - The arcane duelist archetype has the following:

Quote:
Arcane Bond (Ex): At 5th level, an arcane duelist gains the arcane bond ability as a wizard, using a weapon as his bonded item, allowing him to cast any one addition spell that he knows once per day. He may not choose a familiar or other type of bonded item. He may use the hand holding his bonded weapon for somatic components. This ability replaces lore master.

Which would only need to be said if the bonded item would normally prevent using that hand for casting purposes.

Thank you for your answer and comments.

Metamagic rods don't exist in my games, but if they did, a hand holding a bonded item can be used for somatic components.
