Converting Iconic Science Fiction Characters!

I know it is a bit early (most of us don't have the rules yet), but I thought I should start the ball rolling of converting some of the true Icons of science fiction to Starfinder, much like people are already doing with the iconics of fantasy earlier on this board.

I figured that I would start with the Ultimate Science Fiction adventure - Starcrash!
... not really, it isn't a great movie. Caroline Munro is the only reason to watch it, and she doesn't even do her own voice work.

So, it that spirit, here are my suggestions:

  • Stella Star - Human Female Operative Ace Pilot
  • Akton - Divine Avatar ... a.k.a., walking Deus Ex Machina
  • Elle - Humanoid Robot "male" Soldier Mercenary/Lawman
  • Prince Simon - Human Male Soldier Icon
  • Thor - Unidentified Species Male Soldier Mercenary/Lawman

Count Zarth Arn and the Emperor never actually do anything, so I don't think they count.

I figure we can expand on these conversions as more of the rules information becomes available?

Mal has to be a soldier, because he's clearly got heavy weapons proficiency and specialization. (Also, he never, ever, ever talks himself out of any trouble.)

Not even Munro is hot enough to make me watch that movie again. MST3K picked a winner when they savaged that one.

The only thing we differ on is that Caroline Munro was hot enough for me to watch this movie twice ... otherwise, we completely agree about this film.

Hmmm ...

  • Flash Gordon - Human Male Envoy, Mercenary Theme

  • Dr. Hans Zarkov - Human Male Engineer, Scholar Theme
  • Prince Barin - Mongan (Human variant) Male, Soldier, Outlaw Theme
  • Prince Thun - Lion Man (Catfolk variant) Male, Operative Themeless (creating a "primitive" theme)
  • Prince Voltan - Hawkman (Strix variant) Male, Soldier, Icon Theme

I would have put Peter Quill as an Aasimar, as he is half-celestial.

Samantha Carter: Mechanic, Scholar Theme
Daniel Jackson: Mystic, Scholar or Xenoseeker Theme
Teal'c: A heavily modified Human Soldier, Outlaw Thema
Thor: Grey Mechanic or Technomancer, Scholar Theme
Vala Mal Doran: Modified Human Operative, Outlaw Theme
Average Jaffa: Modified Human Soldier or Operative, Mercenary, Bounty Hunter or Priest Theme
Average Goa'uld: Mytic or Operative with Icon or Priest Theme

which makes me think something similar to Goa'uld would be a nice antagonist

Paul Atreides is pretty much the quintessential psychic warrior character. If one has to use Starfinder classes, however, I would say Mystic with the Icon theme or Soldier with the Scholar theme.

For my team:
Spike Spiegel: Human Operative with the Mercenary theme.
Jett Black: Human Soldier with the Bounty Hunter theme.
Faye Valentine: Human Envoy with the Outlaw theme.
Radical Edward: Human Mechanic with the Scholar theme.
Ein: Edward's drone or anthropomorphic corgi operative with the scholar theme.

I'm gonna take a shot at the crew of the Enterprise-D.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard - Human Envoy, Xenoseeker theme
This one's a no-brainer. Picard's greatest strength is his skill as a diplomat, and Xenoseeker is more-or-less described in the opening monologue. Picard even uses the "Quick Pidgin" ability on screen. 'Temba, his arms wide', anyone?

First Officer William T. Riker - Human Operative (explorer), Spacefarer theme
This one was tough. I almost thought of making Riker an Envoy, but I figured Number One's particular brand of charisma was maybe a little closer to that of a self-reliant Operative than the Envoy's seemingly more diplomatic approach. Explorer works best for a Starfleet Operative, and the spacefarer theme seems to fit better than anything else. Depending on the exact flavor of the theme, Icon might work as well.

Dr. Beverly Crusher - Human Mystic (healer connection), Scholar theme
Crusher's a little harder to replicate without access to the core rules, but a mystic's probably the best way to emulate a sci-fi-doctor. Most of the "miraculous" healing magic could probably reflavored as advanced medical technology. The Scholar theme helps to "secularize" the Mystic a bit, and it's not as if Beverly was above using the occasional folk-remedy or indulging in patient's superstitions so as to put them at ease.

Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge - Human Mechanic (AI companion), Ace Pilot theme
Now, Ace Pilot may seem an odd choice, but bear with me. The iconic Star Trek engineer's greatest trick is reconfiguring the warp core to do whatever it is the plot needs. If the Ace Pilot is all about pulling off the impossible with your starship, I think it's the perfect fit for Geordie. The AI companion could of course represent the ship's computer.

We don't yet know how "intelligent" the companion can be. If a drone can be fully sentient, you might be able to do Geordi and Data as a single character.

Lieutenant Commander Data - Android Mechanic (AI companion), Themeless
Data's class is tough, since I'm tempted to make him a Technomancer. Noonien Soong, however, would definitely be a Technomancer, and for that reason I decided against Data being one as well. Noonien talks once or twice about how he wished Data had become a "scientist like him", so it seemed fitting that Data would have chosen a different path. Like Geordi, the AI companion could represent the ship's computer. Themeless seems to be the best fit for Data as he is very much a "blank slate", trying to find his place in the world of organic creatures.

Deanna Troi - Half-Betazoid Phrenic Adept Envoy, Spacefarer theme
The Phrenic Adept archetype gives Deanna her empathic powers, and helps in reflavoring her Envoy abilities as psionic in nature, rather than strictly a result of mundane psychology. Betazoids would probably be fairly easy to build from bits and pieces of other Starfinder races.

Lieutenant Worf - Klingon Soldier (guard fighting style), Bounty Hunter theme
Worf is nice and straightforward, as he's very much the archetypical "Proud Warrior Race" guy. Bounty Hunter doesn't exclusively mean the character is an actual bounty hunter. As James Sutter has said, "cop" (or "security chief") fits the theme as well. Mercenary might fit as well, perhaps better representing Worf's position as tactical officer.

I would say Sheppie is represented by a player who cant decide what they want to play and works out with the GM that they can re-build their character after each book in the AP so long as they keep the same name and back story.

Josephus Miller - Human Operative with the Bounty Hunter theme
Jim Holden - Human Envoy with the Icon theme
Alex Kamal - Human Soldier with the Ace Pilot theme
Naomi Nagata - Human mechanic with the outlaw theme
Amos Burton - Human mechanic/soldier multiclass. themeless, as sociopath isn't a theme.
Bobbie Draper - Human Soldier with the mercenary theme.

What would we do for the crew from the Borderlands games? I'm assuming most of the Sirens would be some flavor of Solarion, but I'm at a loss otherwise.

No I didn't forget them. I think they're an envoy X/fill-in-the-blank, but who knows, so I didn't include them.

I did leave out Joker and EDI, though, because I can't decide how EDI ought to work (need to see how the game handles AIs overall) and I'm waffling on Joker's base class...

(Also, I might need to reconsider Legion, because it has a drone too. might just be a mechanic with sniper rifle proficiency/specialization.)

commander/Captian Riker was mentioned.

Funny thing though, Picard was the diplomat, tis true. Riker ot me was always hands on rough and tumble style of an officer....

you sure a multi class wouldnt do betteR?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

EDI would seem to be a decent fit for the android race. I would be inclined to make her a technomancer thematically, but and Operative(hacker)/Mechanic multiclass would probably better approximate her gameplay abilities.

Joker is a example of a roleplayer overdoing the heroic flaws.

Technically Barbarella is a better film then Starcrash. Unfortunately, Stella Star is actually a better character then Barbarella (who doesn’t actually do anything during her story).

No matter, we’ll plunge ahead anyway …

  • Barbarella – Human Female Envoy Xenoseeker (Oh boy!)
  • Pygar – Ornithanthrope (Strix variant) Male Envoy Themeless
  • Dildano – Sogoite (Human variant) Male Operative Outlaw
  • Professor Ping - Sogoite (Human variant) Male Engineer Scholar
  • Durand Durand – Human Male Engineer Scholar
  • The Great Tyrant - Sogoite (Human variant) Female Operative Icon

The Dirty Pair

Kei and Yuri are the two members of Trouble Consultant team 234, code named "Lovely Angels". Almost every mission they are involved with ends up in disaster, but not failure (they'll catch the crook, but a city may be destroyed in the process), and thus they are more generally known as the "Dirty Pair", a nickname they hate. They are always cleared of any wrongdoing by the 3WA's Central Computer because the extreme collateral damage is never actually their fault (though their mere presence has been known to make things worse). In some but not all continuities, they have joint ESP powers, usually limited to precognition. This talent was the reason they were recruited in the first place.

  • KeiHuman Female Soldier MercenaryKei is a hot-headed tomboy with red hair and tanned skin who wears a silver-white uniform. She favors large weaponry and prefers to "shoot first, ask questions later". The more aggressive of the two, she is also the bustier of the pair and is attracted to manly, muscular men.
  • YuriHuman Female Operative Mercenary - Yuri is of Japanese ethnicity, and wears a golden-yellow uniform. She often uses non-gun weaponry such as energy whips or throwing cards. While the more feminine of the two, she is known to become very violent when crossed. She is the more bottom-heavy of the team and is also a coy flirt who prefers cultured, refined men. Her most recognized weapon is the Bloody Card, a technologically enhanced throwing card that can be used to take down several people at once.
  • MUGHI”Special” Male Soldier ThemelessMughi is a genetically engineered animal that accompanies Kei and Yuri on their cases. In the novels, Mughi looks like a fierce, black panther with noticeable tentacles attached to the shoulder blades of his forelegs. A fierce fighter, Mughi is always ready to help the Dirty Pair when they’re attacked. In the anime Mughi is a large, brown creature that looks like a cross between a car and a bear who is rather lazy and not much help in a fight. In the first episode of the TV series we see Mughi’s tentacles but after that they never show up again. The Dirty Pair call him their "cute pet" and mostly leave him on their ship when they're working. Mughi can fly the ship for short periods of time and operate its systems when Kei or Yuri ask for something specific. Mughi can’t speak but somehow manages to communicate quite well with his friend NAMMO during the TV series. Mughi is terrified of mice. Mughi stands for Military Utility Genetic Hyper Intelligence.
  • NAMMORobot Genderless Engineer ThemelessNAMMO (often called “Nanmo”) is a small, vaguely egg-shaped robot with two large, red shoes that helps Kei and Yuri solve their cases. It’s never mentioned if NAMMO belongs to Kei and Yuri or if the WWWA assinged it to them. The little robot proves to be useful for a wide variety of things. From repairing their ship to piloting it, operating its weapons and even defusing bombs, NAMMO does it all. NAMMO can’t speak but somehow manages to communicate very well with Mughi via beeps. Over the course of the TV series the two of them get along very well. After Affair on Nolandia NAMMO is never seen again in the anime. NAMMO never appeared in the novels. NAMMO stands for Navigator And Memory of Mechanical Organism.

Bounty Hunter soldier. Her proficiency with heavy armor (or Power Armor), longarms, and grenades stand out.

Also, when she loses her armor, she uses light armor and sidearms, but displays no innate mystical abilities.

Dark Matter

Derrick Moss, aka Jace Corso, aka One: Human Male Envoy (Outlaw)
Portia Lin, aka Two: Augmented Human Female Operative (Outlaw). A case could be made that she's an android.
Marcus Boone, aka Three: Human Male Soldier (Mercenary)
Ryo Tetsuda, aka Ishida Ryo, aka Four: Human Male Envoy (Icon - as of season Three, anyway)
Emily Kolburn, aka Five: Human Female Mechanic (Themeless) Phrenic Adept
Kal Varrik, aka Griffin Jones, aka Six: Human Male Soldier (Bounty Hunter (Kal Varrick) or Ace Pilot (Griffin Jones))
The Android, aka Kiva Ehrens: Android (duh) Female Mechanic (Scholar)

Technically they all start with the Outlaw theme, but that would be boring for what this thread is doing.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Farscape

John Crichton - Human Technomancer (Ace Pilot/Scholar) -
"John Crichton. Astronaut."
John starts as a pilot, but his piloting was to test his own theories, so I'd lean more towards Scholar then Pilot. Considering his work with Wormholes (which is clearly not just based on technology), I'd put him down as a Technomancer over Mechanic.

Aeryn Sun - Peacekeeper Soldier (Ace Pilot) w/ Sharpshooter fighting style -
"But shooting makes me feel better."
Aeryn is a peacekeeper officer, an ace pilot, and a combat expert. She is just as happy with a heavy weapon as she is with a pistol, and she's been doing it all her life (literally trained from birth to do it).

Ka D'Argo - Luxan Soldier (Bounty Hunter? Mercenary?) w/ Blitz fighting style -
"Fear accompanies the possibility of death. Calm shepherds its certainty."
D'Argo is the archetype of Luxan warriors. Hit hard, hit fast, rely on his Qualta Blade to carry him through. I was tempted to give him the Arcane Assailant Fighting Style, but felt that Blitz more accurately showed how he fought, regardless of his focus on his ancestral weapon.

Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan - Delvian Mystic (Priest) w/either Healer or Mindbreaker connection -
"Well, even among my people, I was something of an anarchist. Actually, I was the leading anarchist."
Zhaan was pretty easy - she's a mystic, she's a priest. Over the show she showed she could use her powers to heal or harm, which was a central theme of her character.

Dominar Rygel XVI - Hynerian Envoy (Outlaw) -
"I am Rygel the XVI, Dominar to over 600 billion subjects. I don't need to talk to you!"
Rygel is a charming, irritating, egotistical little sociopath. Somehow he was able to both make things better or worse simply by opening his mouth (the times he wasn't stuffing food into it). I went with Outlaw over Thief because he was often shown negotiating black market deals.

Chiana - Nebari Operative (Outlaw) w/ Daredevil or Thief specialization -
"Let's screw the pooch. I'm all about fun."
Chiana was pretty clearly a thief, but she also had plenty of hyper acrobatic moments. She spent a lot of time playing people, and her preferred method of dealing with people was always social.

Stark - Stykera Mystic (Priest) w/ Healer connection -
"Let me help you to the other side."

Bialar Crais - Peacekeeper Soldier (Mercenary) w/ Sharpshooter fighting style (?) -
"I live, I plan, I do all in the service of my own interests. In that I believe I am not unique in the universe."
Crais was a starship commander, but also a peacekeeper, which means he was raised since birth as a soldier.

Scorpius - Sebacean/Scarran Technomancer (Scholar) - An argument could be made for Mechanic with Exocortex -
"I long ago learned the advantages of patience."
Scorpius builds several unique devices over the course of the show, starting with the Aurora Chair. Although his motivations were military in nature, he chose to handle them through science and inventions - his goal was to win the arms race his people were engaged in.

Anyone want to take a shot at the main characters of Babylon 5?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Sort of crosspost, I thought more about how I'd build these characters. I also REALLY want to play an envoy now that I have a proper idea of how one would work.

Miles Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold
All characters are human.
Miles Vorkosigan - Small-sized Envoy (Mercenary)
The consequences will be my responsibility. That's the devil's distinction between being in charge and being in control. I'm in charge, you're in control. You can imagine how much this thrills me.
Using the young template, and with a VERY low constitution score. Miles wishes he were soldier, but instead just dropped the feats on heavy armor, power armor, and long arms. And learned to exert his will in combat by other means. He also managed to talk the DM into allowing him to do Diplomacy at 1st level instead of Sense Motive, but eventually picked up Sense Motive as well anyways. He also has a ton of biological enhancements as he levels, starting with an artificial skeleton.

Aral Vorkosigan - Blitz Soldier (Icon, professional politician)
Guard your honor. Let your reputation fall where it may. And outlive the bastards.
Aral has max ranks in culture and both profession-soldier AND profession-politician. He's able to afford it since he has above average intelligence for a soldier. He is such an effective icon that his entire family reaps some of the benefits of his status.

Cordelia Vorkosigan (née Naismith) - Explorer Operative (spacefarer)
Whack off some idiot's head and you were really something by god.
I went back and forth on if she was an operative or an envoy, and decided that her early years, when she was a PC, she was clearly an operative that traded the normal Culture focus of her explorer specialization for Physical Science. She possibly starts taking levels in envoy later in life, but probably not. Despite how Miles sees his mother, SHE never stopped seeing herself as a ship captain. Considering Aral's focus in life, it's ironic she never seems to have taken a rank in culture; any expertise she demonstrates is by virtue of listening to Aral over the decades.

Mark Vorkosigan - Spy Operative (Outlaw)
The first thing I was supposed to do when I met you was try to kill you.
A clone of Miles, he also has the young template and several bio modifications, but does not have Miles's low constitution score. He probably has a 1 level dip in Blitz soldier, meaning he would have a combination of both of his parent's classes despite never meeting either until he was 22.

Ekaterin Vorkosigan - Xenodruid Mystic (scholar - botany)
Do you think I'm lying or that I'm just stupid?
Let's be real, book!Ekaterin is an envoy (she's on record as preventing a war by shouting at it until it went away) but she's also about the only person in the series I could see pursuing magic if it was in the setting. So she gets to be the party healer.
Well, I suppose the Haut-cetegandans would be Mystics as well.

Gregor Vorbarra - Detective Operative (Icon - Professional Politician)
Let's see what happens.
Gregor is what happens when you drop a normal person in the middle of the circus above and just expected to cope. He has low charisma, intelligence, AND wisdom...at least when compared to the Vorkosigans. With other people, his keen insight and reserved demeanor arrest attention and create an unforgettable impression. Although he probably did have to retrain at least once; he seems to have the daredevil specialization at first, and only later switch to detective. Probably because someone pointed out Daredevil is an underpowered option.

I can't favorite this post. BRIAN BLESSED must be spelled in all caps.

Trent the Uncatchable: Human (genetically engineered with huge point buy and 16+ in every stat), Mechanic (Exocortex), outlaw theme. Missile launcher for robots, spray gun with contact sleep poison for living things. Fleet feet, max datajack, massively upgraded computer in his head, exocortex is named Ralph.

Although really a hybrid with Operative Hacker/Ghost would be closer. Need those crazy social skill bonuses and the ability to walk through a wall.

Sword Art Online (Gun Gale Online segment of season 2)

Kazuto Kirigawa / Kirito - Human Solarian (Icon), Solar Weapon, Photon-mode as primary

Shino Asada / Sinon / Hecate - Human Soldier (Mercenary), DEX-focused, Sharpshoot fighting style

"Death Gun" - Human Operative (Bounty Hunter)

Liberty's Edge

I drew up stats for my take on November Annabella "Nova" Terra from Starcraft.

Nova as a PC: Human Female, Bounty Hunter Operative 14 (Ghost Specialization)

Nova as a NPC: Human Female, Operative (CR 14)

At the moment this is the only iconic science fiction conversion that I've done.

Liberty's Edge

Here are the two Overwatch characters that I have created that can be used as PCs if needed.

Akande "Doomfist" Ogundimu: Human Male, Outlaw Soldier 8.

Reinhardt Wilhelm: Human Male, Mercenary Soldier 13.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

To try and keep this ball rolling, becouse I like this kind of thread, I'm going to have a stab at the cast of voltron: Legendary defender.

Kiro: Human eldritch knight soldier with the mercenary or spacefarer theme

I initially was tempted to label him as a solarian, but given how he doesn't do anything particularly supernatural or mystical beyond having his cybernetic hand glow, eldritch knight soldier ended up feeling better. Mercenary is a reference to his gladiator days, while spacefarer goes a bit further back to when he was involved in manned spaceflight alongside Pidge's brother and dad.

Keith: Human blitz soldier with the ace pilot theme OR Human ghost operative.

One of the two likely picks for best fighter in the main cast, soldier just seems right for him, and blitz moreso as he uses a sword almost exclusively. Ace pilot theme becouse he's also likely the most capable pilot initially, and that is a big part of his early characterisation.

Alternatively, he could be an operative who uses a particularly long knife to trick attack with, given how he gets sneakier later. Soldier definately feels more right to me though.

Lance: Human sharpshooter soldier with the ace pilot theme

He went to the same school Keith went to to study basically the same thing, so them sharing a class and theme makes a lot of sense to me. Sharpshooter becouse he uses a longarm and later takes to calling himself the team's sharpshooter.

Pidge: Human drone mechanic with the scholar theme OR Human hacker operative with the scholar theme

Pidge is definately a techie of some sort, and technomancer doesn't feel quite right here considering the setting. After the drone goes away though, there's lots of sneaking and hacking done, so I'm torn.

Hunk: Human envoy with scholar theme

Easilly the most diplomatic person on the team with the only real contender being Allura, envoy feels right for this big lug. He read the threads saying it'd be a good pick to go with an unwieldy weapon when you're an envoy and whent right for that. Diplomacy and Engineering would be his most prominent skills, and profession: chef.

Allura: Altean star shaman mystic Xenoseeker OR Altean technomancer with the xenoseeker theme

As the only person doing much of any mystical stuff on the show, shaman feels like a good fit, though you could easilly argue technomancer aswell, given how much of said mysticism involves tech to enhance the effect. Xenoseeker becouse she seems utterly fascinated with every alien species she finds.

DOOM

Doomguy, aka Doom Marine, aka Hell Walker, aka the one and only:
1. Human Soldier, Merc theme, Class Soldier, style Hit-and-Run.
2. Aasimar Soldier/Paladin, Merc theme, Class Soldier, style Hit-and-Run.

Option 1 is classic Doomguy from 1-3. Straight forward, simple.
Option 2 is Doom 2016. Going off the lore that he is a incorruptible soul that keeps returning when Hell is unleashed. Aasimar felt more akin to the incorruptible instead of the traditional modifiers. I mixed Soldier and Paladin, again because of the resurrection cycle, plus when your a mid level paladin it's hard to corrupt you.

No one's done the Andromeda crew as far as I can see? I'll take a shot at it.

The Ryder Twins: Xenoseeker Exomechanics, this is pretty obvious, depending on whether you want some magic you could dip some Technomancer levels, given their Military training you might see Heavy Weapons or Sniper Rifles as appropriate too

Pelessaria B'Sayle (Peebee): A Scholar Drone Mechanic with an Archaeological focus. In combat she uses small arms and combat hacking as more of a harrying force and directs Poc rather than being a direct damage dealer

Vetra Nyx: An Outlaw Operative(Detective) with the Starfinder Forerunner archetype, Vetra is good at reading people, skillful, well connected, and highly resourceful, and not too shabby in a fight either.

Cora Harper: A Themeless Soldier (Blitz Style) later going into Guard Style with the Phrenic Adept archetype, she's a bit bland personality-wise (hence her lack of theme) instead preferring to model herself after her current role model, whether it be Alec or Sarissa. Lastly she has the phrenic adept archetype because of those Biotics capable of tearing apart a tank that she can't seem to forget.

Liam Kosta: controversially I'd call him an Exomechanic with a penchant for grenades rather than a soldier, as a lot of his abilities are based around tech and overcharging his gear rather than a penchant for combat. As for theme I would call him a Mercenary (not in a literal sense, but rather because of how the abilities synergize with his squad oriented, helpful mindset)

Nakmor Drack: An easy one this time, Drack is a pretty good fit for a Bounty Hunter Soldier with Blitz and Armor Storm styles, an unstoppable juggernaut charging into the fray with shotgun and rifle in hand.

Jaal Ama Darav: Given his skills as a rebel soldier and his preferred methods of dispatching enemies (sniping and invisibly backstabbing respectively) he's a pretty solid Operative(Ghost). As for his theme, given his fame among the rebellion and the trust that Evra had in him as a soldier I can pretty confidently peg him as an Icon of the Soldier profession.
