New to PFS and GenCon

Hello there everyone! I and a few friends are newbies to GenCon and Pathfinder Society in general, and we were wondering what all to expect. We've made characters per Season 8 rules, but don't know if it will carry over, or how to make them official. Any help would be great, thank you!

For gen con, the biggest piece of advice i can give is that the sessions effectively start half an hour before their listed times. Thats when they start seating people, the "Start" time is the END of the seating time.

That's a little misleading. Yes, we start seating as early as 30 minutes prior to slot start, but seating does not END at slot start. It is just the time when we can begin seating generic ticket holders which means "real" ticket holders who arrive late are at risk of losing their seat.

Thank you very much! I guess some of my less general questions are about things like the Character Number; what's legal for play in what looks like Season 9, and that such stuff.

I also saw something somewhere about needing to post the character somewhere here? Is that true or did I just read something weird and wrong?

Nope, you need to have chronicle sheets for your characters. (which is "I played this adventure and got this much gold and found this unique lootz)

Whatever character sheet you're using is fine. As a joke/ rules discussion i once made a character sheet on 2 ply, took a picture of it... and then lost the character sheet on the way to the session, and wound up using that as my sheet for a game.

I've found having a copy of them here on paizo handy a few times , but it's not neccesary.

Going here should get you a pfs number

The season is about what comes out. Older stuff from past years is still legal to play unless they retired it. 7ish is out of 260ish? scenarios were retired the rest are still good.

Okay that's cool. I just didn't realize, since the PDF specified certain races that could be played, but not others, and my friend wanted to play a tiefling, but it wasn't listed.

A tiefling is not a legal race to play now unless you have a boon or made one and played it when it was a legal race.

Ahhh OK. The list of stuff on Piazo is so cluttered I can't really make heads or tails of it. Let me just run down the our characters really quick so I know if we'll be OK with what we have right now: Human Investigator, Dwarven Warpreist, Nagaji Barbarian. Are those good, or will we have to make something else?

There's a reason "hey, is this legal.." is a chapter in the linked Newbies guide :)

Yeah. Its a bit of a mess. Your best bet is to head to archives of nethys , look for the symbol of the open road (funny white x) next to somethings name to see if it's pfs legal.

Those are good. The warpriest will need a god though.

What books or PDFs do you have? Each person will need to own a copy in order to use things from the resource.

I ask because the classes you list are not from the core rule book.

Well we're hoping to just be grouped together so maybe we can use them together, but we did only use the books I had available, and I have the pdfs should they truly be needed

Ok. As a group you are fine for home or store sessions. But going to con could be more problematic if you are not at the same table.

You should be fine if all of play at the same table.

I can only hope we don't get separated, as we made the group to balance each other out and get a table together. It's also just a tad intimidating, for some of my friends more than others.

With regards to Gen Con, as long as you have real tickets for the events you wanna play, it should not be a problem seating you together with your friends. Generic tickets is much more challenging as seats tends to be sporadically available across multiple tables

That would double the advice to get there early , that way you're one of the core groups that they form a table around. They'll sort you and 2 or 3 lone geeks and put you on an empty table.

If you show up just as they're starting or gods forbid a little later (whistle innocently) you're trying to cram 3 geeks into tables of 5 and that just doesn't work. Even solo and a little late was a bit of a dash to find something one person could play.

I would highly advise trying to get at least a PFS game or two in before gencon , because there's going to be a lot of PFS specific terminology getting thrown around and it helps to have a little idea what it is before you see it happen in the middle of gencon.

A three ring or pronged binder pre stuffed with plastic protector sheets would be a good idea if you're playing more than 2 or three games. At the end of the adventures you're going to get pieces of paper (chronicles) that you're going to need to keep in order. While migrating from table to table.

We would, but unfortunately for us, every PFS game we could go to is during the week, and we all work different shifts. It's difficult enough getting together on Saturday's for our home games. The one guy we could send is the one lacking confidence and true knowledge of the game to retain the info he'd get.

Go separately? Or get together at pretty much any time and the chat group can find someone to run something. One of the advantages to a living campaign is people being able to hop in and out of games on random scheduels.

not the same as doing it but the next best thing i suppose would be watching a session.

... and i want that DM screen.

Another important note is that there are going to be a wealth of super helpful folks at GenCon. If you have a question, there will be someone that can and will answer it, even on Sunday when we're all a bit haggard. GMs and HQ folks will be readily identifiable and plentiful :).
