K'Thrax'll Vesk Operative

General Discussion

I've got a friend who is super excited about Starfinder coming out this summer. I haven't really had the time to look over a lot of the previews, but i've scanned the race/class info. If this is the wrong place for this, let me know. I'm wondering if a character concept would work. I'm thinking of a Vesk Operative that is fairly pragmatic. His word is his bond and once he says he'll do something, he does it. But he isn't picky about how it gets done. From he preview blog, I'm thinking of downplaying the "honorable combat" and "glory-seeker" parts of Vesk and focusing on the get it done. I'll wait to see how the actual specialization turn out, but I'm thinking mostly infiltration type skills, maybe a little demolition and sniper as well. Does this seem to fit with what is known? Would there be room for this kind of character? Is operative an accurate fit or would soldier be closer?

Scarab Sages

Based on the preview data, the concept should work out fine. Operative and Solder would both fit, but the Solder is more about straight-forward combat and the operative is more about special ops. Both classes should be able to make top rate snipers, with the operative using the Ghost specialization and Trick Attacks to be mobile, hidden, sharpshooters and the Sharpshoot combat style for soldiers should be cool as well.

We really don't know enough yet to say which is "better", but both classes should work. The Soldier will likely be a little tougher and do more damage in combat, while the Operative will likely be able to apply debuffs to help the party, and will have more skills.

since stealth seems to be a typical option i would stick with operative

I'll wait to see what the family structure of Vesk is, but here's some thoughts. His mother was in the police force and earned some prestige. He grew up with stories of her work and too many crime dramas and mystery novels. He wasn't exactly a disappointment, but never really a source of pride either. He got into the police academy in an effort to impress his parents. Throughout the academy, he frequently played loose with many procedural rules. He never really did things to get in trouble, but definitely refused to color in the lines. If the objective was to capture a flag on the other side of a field, he was just as likely to climb through the ducts, even if it was out of bounds, He ended up unable to graduate and left the academy embarrassed. Though he's sure his mother knows, he hasn't been back to see her. I figure this sets up a fine 1st level amount of skills. This could be when the campaign starts, as he's drowning his sorrows after leaving the academy.

Scarab Sages

I'm not sure if there is a separate police force from the military for the veskarium, but it should work.

Do we know if it's beneficial to multiclass and dip into soldier?

Unless multi-classing works differently now, you should get all of the Soldier's proficiencies, which should be extremely beneficial, I would assume. About as much as it was in Pathfinder I guess. Less need for it pre-req wise, but maybe you'd have level to damage with more things because of it?

Three levels of soldier gets you specialization in all weapons (or most weapons if there's a proficiency or two we don't know about yet.) So yeah, very worth it.

From the few blogs I've read through, it sounds like there are a few more things that are dependent on character level, so those would encourage more multiclassing. On the other hand, looking at the abilities they have previewed, i.e. Cloaking field and backlash, are you really going to want to delay those fun (ex) and (su) abilities?

Another way to encourage multiclassing would be removing the lvl 20 capstone abilities, they were pretty cool but usually one didnt get there (especially if you multiclassed)
