Liberty's Edge

Nothing to worry about? May 2018 release date is still good, they say

I wonder how bad the differences were.

Well, they lost two very talented and fun directors who could have brought some of their own style to Star Wars. That is a never good sign. Although, the reason was a beef between scriptwriter and directors and the fact that studio took Kasdan's side IS interesting. Usually "artistic differences" are between director and studio. Two wildly creative and modern film makers clashing between old guard writer that has worked since the 70's....yah.

On the other hand, maybe Lord & Miller will now direct the FLash movie they had a script for.

I saw elsewhere that maybe the few big films over the last bit that have changed directors at the end of production may signal a return to the studio and producer model of yesteryear. It's hard to see the end of the director focused model we've had so much in the last few decades, but the producer heavy Disney is already headed that direction with the individual directors of the MCU giving over alot of creative control to the vision of the studio.

At any rate, not a good sign.

Is Ron Howard going to reshoot what was already shot? From what I been reading Kennedy and Kasdan weren't happy at all with most of it.

I will not be suprised at all of this movie has a tone problem. I mean, this screams of issues with the tone of the film.

Agreed. It sounds like that's the main issue Lucasfilm was having - the light-hearted, overly comedic tone the directors were going for did not line up with what Star Wars and Han Solo are about.

Hopefully this will address that ...

Having troubles explaining why Doritos and Mt dew are in the SW universe now?

Han Solo's role in the original film was pretty much to turn the Death Star infiltration into a fast-paced comedic romp.

Light hearted comedic tone seems perfect.

This!

First of all, Star Wars fans are generally Rabid and often Feral. I can't imagine what kind of masochist would WANT to direct a Han Solo movie. Two things people can't stand... messing with Nostalgia... and Reboots. And this will be both. Han without Harrison?? I have always imagined this to end in flames...

That said, yeah... Han may have some serious tones to his character and origin... but the Han Solo that Harrison Ford played... and an origin in the tone of THAT character... should have more of an Ocean's Eleven feel than a dark and gritty scum and villainy vibe. He may have been a law breaking rogue... but he was a CHARISMATIC law breaking rogue.

It also seems like a lot of hand-wringing over stuff that is largely irrelevant... at least with all the insider news coming out about this. This is all the stuff that is normally only interesting years after the fact around a successful movie (or well known flop).

Once upon a time, yes. But these days the fate of films is determined well in advance of their release.

No, the majority of the movie going audience does not follow insider news of movie studios. They will see the movie when it comes out and form their opinion then. It's a very small % of die hard fans who pay attention to this kind of stuff.

Ant Man had very similar behind the scenes story take place and it did just fine. I'd consider grossing $520 million on a $130 million budget pretty good. I'm sure someone will reply to me about how they hated Ant Man, but that doesn't change the fact that the movie succeeded with the general public. Go dig up the Ant Man thread, you'll see people talking about how the swap in directors was probably going to ruin the movie.

I bet no one even cares about the director swap in Ant Man any more.

...but I thought Johnny Depp said his movies are being bombed by the internets???

I think it's a combination. I don't think most people really care at all about the behind the scenes trivia going on with the directors... but at the same time Critics and Rotten Tomato's have WAY more power then they should. A lot of people have made up their minds long before the show ever airs.

Critics and Rotten Tomatoes only have power as long as they're accurate. If their reviews are decidedly off, people wouldn't care what they have to say. It's not like the Transformers are getting rave reviews, but people still go see them. Currently, 0 Transformers movies have gotten a Fresh rating, but several of them hold top spots for all-time grossing ticket sales.

Well put. Even as someone who has an interest in the behind-the-scenes going ons in the film world, in the end, all I really care about is the END PRODUCT.

Sovereign Court

I'm not young nor particularly old, but the first instance of behind the scenes impact on a film I recall was Water world. Great concept, but not well executed. Nobody cares unless the movie ends up sucking in the end though. I find critic reviews and consensus sites like RT to be really helpful when it comes to films I'm on the fence about. Social media is more a culprit of damning a film then critics or RT are these days.
