Detective Comics, one of the two Bat books I still collect, is hopefully moving away from that whole Team Batman crap. This last issue was a pleasant surprise with Deacon Blackfire turning back up. What a blast from the past!

Two issues into the new Thor and I like it. It's got some humor, and the art is...interesting.

Granted, I've never collected Thor before, and haven't paid attention to stuff going on in his books in forever. So I wasn't aware that he apparently lost an arm and Mjolnir.

I especially love his murder dog, goat and house boat.

Thori is great. :) As is the goat.

I'm not so sold on the multiple hammers thing. Hope it doesn't last to long. Also didn't seem to be used in his Avengers appearances, so not sure what to say about that.

I also really like the role Loki's playing here, even if I've got no idea what he's up to.

A-zombie,

While I'm by no means an epic level expert, I can at least tell you what I've seen in Thor since 2004.

Thori is a great thing that came out of Kieron Gillen's run on Loki and Thor.

Scarab Sages

Cosmic Ghost Rider #1 should be out this week, so now I'm tempted to make a trip to the comic book store to pick up my stuff, even though I did that last week as well. I don't like to waste a trip on just a few books, and there should only be about 4 in my box.

Although, I did notice that Immortal Hulk #2 is also coming out this week. I did not get #1, but after hearing that it has some horror elements to it, I'm tempted to see if the store has a copy.

A-zombie,

Cosmic Ghost Rider's first issue was interesting. Not sure I'd spare the money for it.

Immortal Hulk though, is VERY good, especially because it's more body horror than it is monster horror.

That and apparently Banner took some Int Drain after having his head aerated... But not so much that the average Joe would notice.

Scarab Sages

So, when I went to the comic book store yesterday, I did pick up Immortal Hulk. Read the first issue, and really enjoyed it. I'm hoping to get around to issue #2 sometime today.

I also decided to add Ant-man and the Wasp, since it's another Mark Waid book. I like his work. And they had all the back issues. I'm not very familiar with the new Wasp, so I hadn't been aware that Hank Pym had a teenage daughter. But they did some pretzel twists to get her the Van Dyne last name. Reading through the book, they gave her ties to the Red Room, which I had seen before in the MCU, being where Scarlett's Black Widow was trained. Interesting.

Scarab Sages

Apparently they're doing another 12 issue series set in the world of the Dark Crystal. The previous one was decent enough. Still, I don't know what else they can do with it.

A-zombie,

If you want to learn more about Nadia, you REALLY need to read the Unstoppable Wasp series by Jeremy Whitley. It was VERY under-rated and quite good.

Not sure I'm a fan of this series...but I love Nadia.

Scarab Sages

I enjoyed Doctor Strange's visit with the Skrulls. I always liked the Super Skrull. And now - skrull sorcerers.

Still, as much as I enjoy seeing SORCERERS IN SPAAAACCCE, I hope he gets back to Earth soon.

Scarab Sages

Immortal Hulk has probably become one of my new top 5 books. That is, top 5 favorites I'm currently collecting. Not top 5 favorites ever. Too early to tell that.

I've always enjoyed horror themed comics though. One of my favorites of those was from a few years back, when they did a Werewolf by Night 4-issue series.

This new one for Strange isn't my favorite...but like you I hope they resolve all this soon.

But yes, the Immortal Hulk is my new favorite of 2018, easily.

Scarab Sages

I found out another League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is being published. First issue came out this week. So, of course, I'll have to call my store and have it added to my box.

Pass. After seeing Sean Connery as Quartermain, I don't think I need more of that in my life.

Thomas Seitz wrote:

The movie was no more than vaguely related to even the original comic.

Which is admittedly not for everyone, but brilliant nonetheless. The later sequels probably even less for everyone. :)

In any case, I'm sticking with stuff I know is working, like Immortal Hulk and Infinity stuff.

Scarab Sages

Saw an article the other day that Marvel is bringing back "What If?" for a six issue run. Hopefully, it will prove successful enough that they will expand it to something more regular.

I hope so. I loved What If. But I doubt it since Marvel already is a What If...(looks at Secret Wars 2015)

Scarab Sages

Saw an article today that DC is going to put out an out-of-regular-continuity miniseries called BATMAN/JOKER: THE DEADLY DUO, with writing and art by the great Marc Silvestri.

This could be really interesting. I know I have plenty of stuff with Silvestri's art, but cannot currently recall if I have anything he's written. It's certainly possible, considering the size of my collection.

Scarab Sages

They're also bringing back Captain Marvel (SHAZAM!!) to a regular series, written by Geoff Johns. It could be interesting, but I'm hesitant based on the art they shared. It showed at least six Shazam-powered people. I know one was Billy, another was Mary, a third was probably Freddy Freeman. The other three I didn't recognize. I never really liked the idea of a bunch of other Shazam folk walking around.

A-zombie

They're probably from when the Wizard gave his powers to some kids that Billy was friends with...like in the Flashpoint Captain Marvel/Thunder.

Apparently there was a Shazam series early in the New 52 (maybe as a backup?), also by Geoff Johns.
That also had Mary & Freddy and 3 other new Marvel Family kids.

Having a bunch of other Shazam folks has long been a part of the lore. Maybe they'll bring back Uncle Marvel and Tawky Tawny too. :)

thejeff,

I think they killed Tawky...

Thomas Seitz wrote:

thejeff,

So?

This is comics. How many times has he been killed?

I dunno but I keep thinking they're not ready to bring him back...

Scarab Sages

Not sure I like where they seem to be headed in the aftermath of Flash War. Especially since I saw a description for the next issue of Flash mentioning something about "Wally's last run". Can't remember where I saw it, though.

I've got to say, if they get rid of Wally (again), I may just have to write off Flash. Which would suck. He's one of my favorites. And I've already written off too many other favorites: Green Lantern (too many human GLs, plus I thought the storlines were sucking hard), Batman (although I have eased back into it with Detective), Justice League (just too much stuff I thought was stupid, plus I never thought Cyborg belonged with them).

Scarab Sages

Also, Marvel is making a come back in my pull list. For the past few years, I hardly collected any Marvel (Moon Knight, Infamous Iron Man, the Man-Thing miniseries). And up until a few weeks ago, I was collecting Moon Knight, Daredevil, and that's about it.

Now, I've got Doctor Strange, Ant-man and the Wasp, Immortal Hulk, Thor, Cosmic Ghost Rider, and Tony Stark: Iron Man added to the list.

My understanding is Wally is going to a nice comfy room to hang out until someone decides he needed.

Also I do think Marvel is improving in some areas after the whole Secret Empire farce.

Scarab Sages

"Hey, what else can we do to insult the fans of Wally West? You know, that character who had a successful run as The Flash for 20 years, before we decided to relive our childhood by bringing back Barry Allen?"

"I know! Let's give him a mental breakdown and lock him away in a mental institution."

And.....that is why I will now be done with The Flash. Probably Titan, as well, since the only real reason I was collecting that book was because it had Wally in it.

A-zombie,

Well you'd have a breakdown too if someone took your kids and wiped your memory AND the memories of everyone else so they forgot about them too. But I get it.

I'm not feeling Titans reboot right now that's for sure. Nor Damien's Titans.

Scarab Sages

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I agree about s!+# like that being reason enough for a mental breakdown. This is part of their whole "Heroes in Crisis" storyline.

I just have to wonder how selective DC is going to be in which heroes have a crisis. Like Wally West, whom DiDio doesn't seem to like. Because if whatever criteria they claim to use was enough to get Wally locked up, then pretty much every damned hero in the DCU needs to be locked up right along side him.

Titans was kind of a disaster from the get go. The only reason I even started collecting it was because Wally was in it.

As for Damien, I try not to willingly purchase any book that little a!$+&*$ character is part of.

Three things:

1. I dunno about Dido's being THAT involved in the selection so much as he saw some stuff and said "This should work!"

But yes, more than just Wally needs to be locked away and possibly the big 3.

2. Titans...I thought had promise but it kept morphing in REALLY horrid ways.

2. Damien was better off when he was just working with Jon.

Scarab Sages

I might have to give the new Fantastic Four a shot. Although, I understand their have been some big changes over the years since I last collected FF. I recall reading somewhere they brought the daughter of Reed and Sue back.

Aberzombie wrote:

She featured pretty heavily in Hickman's run on the FF. I think she was around in the run up to Secret Wars.

Not sure what the whole family's been doing since then.

thejeff,

That's kind of the question on everyone's mind. Most everyone thought the rest of the FF died.

A-zombie,

Yes Valeria, the daughter of Reed and Sue, is a main character. Much like Franklin is. Some times more so since she's often shown to be smarter than Dad.

Scarab Sages

I recall a "What if..." story about what would have been if Valeria had survived the initial miscarriage story. It was, as I recall, two stories - one ended bad, the other ended good.

I had been peripherally aware she had been brought back, but hadn't really paid much attention to Marvel for several years.

Well considering I'm a dyed in the wool Marvel fan (even when they do something incredibly stupid) I keep up to date with stuff from 2002 to present.

Scarab Sages

I've never considered myself devoted to either one of the big two, going back and forth over the years on which one I buy more books from. The first series I ever seriously collected was Marvel's G.I. Joe, but around the time Wally West took over as The Flash I was mostly collecting Marvel. Then, for awhile, it was equal parts both. Then it was mostly Marvel. Then DC.

For the past few years, it's been mostly DC with a smattering of Marvel stuff. In the last few months, it's going back to a bit more equal.

One thing that's changed over the years, is I think I enjoy the mini-series format far more these days. I find myself wishing both companies would do it more often.

Scarab Sages

On top of that, I've got favorite heroes on each side: Batman, Flash and Martian Manhunter for DC. Captain America, Ghost Rider, and Moon Knight for Marvel.

Also on the DC side, starting with Cosmic Odyssey, all the way through Death of the New Gods, I collected most everything 4th World related.

I never much liked 4th world. Mostly because I never understood in a world with aliens with god like powers, why needed more of them...

I'd consider myself a Marvel mostly because my favorites are Thor, Spider-man (I LOVE Mysterio!), and a tie between Strange and Captain America.

Loved Kirby's 4th World stuff, though I'm still looking for some bits of it. Liked some other uses of it (Great Darkness Saga in the Legion might have been my first introduction), but far from all.

I never understood it in the context of DC. It made more sense to me in Marvel. Go figure.

Scarab Sages

I can see where it might have made more sense at Marvel, given Kirby. I think my love of it was helped by some of the awesome writers/artists working with the material - Jim Starlin, Mike Mignola, Walt Simonson, John Byrne, to name a few.

Thomas Seitz wrote:

Where they called it "Eternals"?

The Eternals weren't gods. They might have been worshiped as such, but there was a distinct difference between Asgardians and Eternals.

I was thinking more of Eternals being Kirby's next take on the same themes when he came back to Marvel after doing the Fourth World at DC.

Eh. Maybe but Fourth World beings were CLEARLY gods, not just enhanced mortals.

Scarab Sages

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I was thinking the other day about Ghost Rider, and what I would like to see in a new series.

I think it would be cool to take a page from Agents of SHIELD, and have the curse as something that can be passed on to a willing person. Then you have a series showcasing people taking on the mantle of Ghost Rider while trying to right some wrong or bring vengeance against someone/thing.

Maybe they could even take a page from Legends of the Dark Knight, and have a different creative team for each story arc. Then each arc could be whatever length the writer is capable of telling a solid story in.

Could be cool.

I think it would work in a comic setting, not sure about as a TV show, if that's what you're thinking.

Scarab Sages

I was strictly thinking comic.

Scarab Sages

Only two issues in, and I've got to say I'm impressed with Justice League Dark. James Tynion IV is doing a decent job so far.

Not sure I like the direction they are taking Nabu, however.
