The Mythos Notes of Astrapi Mirous

One of the rules I implemented for my Strange Aeons game was to give any player who writes a recap or summary of the previous game session one free d20 reroll during the next session.

One of my players, Ashton "N'wah" Sperry, went above and beyond the call of duty, and has been writing these recaps in the form of an in-character illustrated journal.

We thought that other GMs might get a kick out of reading them, but he didn't want to poke his nose into the Strange Aeons board, lest he encounter spoilers, so he asked me to post them here. Since he did all the board formatting for me, I could hardly refuse!

Note: Major spoilers for books 1-4. May contain some foul language.

Not quite?

I haven’t posted new links, but you can find journals through the first third of book 6 by following the “Root Directory” link at the top.

N’Wah is still working on the last couple journal entries. I’ll poke him to try to get him to finish.

Yeah, I just hadn't seen an update in two months and didn't know.

Hey everybody, N'wah here! Figured since we've wrapped up the AP it's safe for me to find the thread and jump in in-person. :D

I do plan to finish up the journals- as a matter of fact, I was resuming work on the most recent one of the backlog earlier today, but a power outage cut the work short, so I'll be hopping back in tomorrow afternoon. There was a total of five sessions as-yet unfinished, though two of those were rather short, so it's not as intense of a backlog as it might look, and all the art is finished (and then some- all of it's up in the Drawings section of the Google Drive).

Anyhoo, I wanted to thank you guys personally for keeping up on it as it's been coming along. It's been really fun working on all these, and being so close to finishing it all up, it'd be a real waste to hang the project up now. With most of my other time constraints back to a more manageable level (minus the upcoming holidays, of course) I should be on track to have it all rolled out soon.

In the meanwhile, I'll collect all of the shorthand episode title description things off of Facebook for the ones already written and get links set up for the inevitable final full link post. Prolly have a filler one posted up that goes through Book 5 and the first of Book 6 tonight.

Thanks again!

Here it is, the current journal series links- I'll add a post with a link for each new entry as I complete it, then create another massive compilation list once they're all done (including planned epilogue- for anyone who's come to love Astrapi as much as I have, resolving some of her backstory stuff might be almost as important as all the other bullVig).

Also, if you missed it, I posted up the backstory I wrote for one of our players (Ben had us all write another player's backstory, so we didn't know our own PC histories 'til we uncovered them in Book 3). Here was my assignment- Teodor Kondiir, tiefling spiritualist.

Journal's proceeding apace- I'd guess I'm about 50% done with the latest one just banging it out this afternoon. Evenings are busier for me on the home-front so we'll see how much more I do today, but it oughtta be done this week barring complications, at which point I can roll to the next on the list.

While the computing machine's been finicky (and thus preventing new entries from getting done), I've decided to assemble a YouTube playlist of all the songs whose lyrics made up the tail-end of all those journal entries. I'll add the last few as the entries are finished.

Thanks for the kind words, uafbum! It's been pretty fun writing all these up, and I'm really glad folks have been enjoying 'em. After the series is wrapped up, I'm thinking on doing some in-character journal entries about random Golarion tidbits- a fun way to flesh out the campaign world, albeit non-canonically, and keep the writing going at the same time.

Topics might just be random stuff I'm interested in delving into, though since I'm cautiously optimistic that the upcoming Return of the Runelords AP will be a good one, I thought I might delve into stuff relevant to that- Thassilon, rune magic, that kinda thing. I am open to suggestions, however- I'll get a new thread going when that all kicks off, and a Google Drive for it. Might start up a blog to post it in as well.

And speaking of journals: the latest journal is done! Enjoy, folks!

Thanks! Most of it's based off the official Paizo art, stuff from Chaosium, or occasionally other sources, but I liked the idea of having the art have a coherent through-line as part of the journals. Funnily enough, I originally didn't plan to illustrate monsters and the like, despite giving my PC ranks in Craft (painting)- I was gonna do occasional bits here and there of stuff relevant to my character or things that interested me. Somewhere around journal #2, though, I started doing doodles of the art Ben posted up in our Facebook group for the AP, and it kinda all snowballed from there.

During book 3 I decided to toy with formatting and possible publication as books to give to fellow PCs and AP authors, hence the 9" x 6" format shift. I don't think that'll happen since self-publishing is kinda pricey, plus my computer suffers serious heartburn when I attempt to put more than one AP book's worth of words and art into a single ODT file. Also, the full campaign plus illustrations balloons the thing into a massive volume one could bludgeon a small animal to death with, and I know very little about publishing anyways.

Add into it that publishing even a few volumes to give away comes dangerously close to looking like I'm selling them (an Acceptable Use no-no) and the chances of a physical form of them- outside of printing them for myself in a binder at Kinko's or something- are basically zero.

However! Robert Brookes suggested setting up a blog for 'em, and even offered some pro-bono design work to help it along, so that is a likely thing in the future. If that happens, a link will certainly be made for it.

I've been having fun making 'em, even if sometimes the campaign journal format can be a bit limiting. When free time was a bit more available, that's the purpose the Intermezzios served- a chance for me to get to stretch out a bit beyond things exclusively related to the campaign plot as we were exploring it. Typically, if a volume is a bit blunt, it's because I'm sorta just pushing through 'til the next one, and I hope to fix some of that when I give the whole thing a final review process- clean up the typos and grammatical errors, fix an occasional unintended repetitive phrase, and so on.

tl;dr- It fills me with great joy that folks are enjoying these!

CAMPAIGN JOURNALS COMPLETE!

It was (almost) a Christmas miracle. :D

I'll be looking around for a good way to host these in a more browsing-friendly form, though I do plan to host them all on the Google Drive for as long as it remains feasible. Also plan to clean up all the typos and stuff, but for now I think I'll take a well-deserved break and recharge the inspiration batteries. If folks have requests for future articles, feel free to drop me a line.

Came late to this, but enjoyed it a lot. Liked the victory-but-at-a-cost ending -- very appropriate for a Mythos story.

cheers,

Thank you so much!

That was what Ben said regarding it at the end- he didn't really want it to be entirely a "and they all go home, everything's hunky-dory" finale, but by that same token, an "everyone's dead or insane" ending isn't what a Pathfinder AP is about, either. The sort of compromise ending was a bit of a challenge to decide how to write about, until I had a brainstorm a few weeks ago that'd let me get the gist across without entirely breaking the narrative for the sake of comprehensiveness.

It does shortchange the final fight a bit, during which I had to cast wish twice, and spent a not-inconsiderable amount of time trapped under a prismatic sphere with a very angry Pallid Mask- what I referred to as the Thunderdome. In fact, it was the second wish that ate my bonded item spell, so an interplanetary teleport was off the table to save us. But if I've gotta lose something in a journal, a blow-by-blow recap of a series of slugfests is what I'd prefer to chop. That, and by the end my note-taking took a backseat to trying not to get killed, so a lot of the nitty-gritty ended up lost anyways.

It was a total blast to write, and I'm looking forward to continuing doing some entries beyond the scope of the AP. But moreso, I'm looking forward to taking a little breather, drawing some random art, and coming up with ideas on what to write.

Thanks to all of you who came along for the ride- or are just diving into it! It was a great AP played with some great folks, and I hope the journals can give a glimpse of all that greatness in an enjoyable format. :D

Not to mention the bit where you had to murder the Briarstone Witch so she couldn’t go back in time via the dreamlands to murder you before you ever woke up in the asylum in the first place. That was one of my favorite parts in this book.

I had two prior drafts where I'd attempted to unscramble those plot eggs out of my notes, but in the end I think it just made it more confounding. Or at least like describing a dream:

"And then the Briarstone Witch showed up, and also a ratling named Yonah was there. And she was all, 'you should be not alive but you're alive, so I'm-a sic a Tatter Man on your past selves,' and we were like, 'no way,' and we beat her to death and Yonah ran away. Then we went into the basement and said, 'wake up!' and past us did, and we were the ones who saved ourselves, not the dying guy. Then we woke up and Thrushmoor wasn't a frozen-time pastel painting anymore."

I woulda liked to include it, but it was an uphill battle I just didn't have the strength to fight at the time. Apologies.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

So, as a player in this campaign (my Paizo alias should make it clear which character), I can say that this was one of the most interesting, compelling, and fun Adventure Paths I've ever played. Astrapi's journals were often the highlight of my week, because of their fun blend of in-jokes, pop-culture references, art, and honest-to-God recaps of things that I'd forgotten.

I'm really glad to know that these are posted publicly for people to enjoy.

It was an honor and a pleasure to play beside you, sir. May Hedwick loom large in all our hearts as a hero that the world needed at a desperate moment in time.

Also, you gave me the best encapsulation of the journals I've ever seen:

"I think the Astrapi Mirous Method involves detached condescension and no small smattering of snarky pop-culture nonsense. Which are essentially two hallmarks of my life, Ashton."

So you're a hero to me, sir. :D

Working on some RotR character backstory stuff written by Astrapi. Since RotR occurs some nine-ish years before Straeons ended, it's a matter of historical record, so she can write my backstory and recaps as letters to her sister about Varisia. Kinda excited about it. :D

Also, I'm putting all my current tokens up for folks to use for free for whatever they'd like; you can find 'em here. There's over five hundred tokens in there, IIRC; that's after my latest purge of almost two hundred that I didn't think made the cut anymore. So something for folks to enjoy. :D
