Improved Familiar Leveling Up

So say you take an Improved Familiar at whatever level, upon taking it does the familiar level up to your spell casting level or does it start at it's base states?

It uses the familiar advancement, same as a regular familiar, except it doesn't get speak with animals of its kind.

The Familiar doesn't collect Experience points. It just get's better as it's master becomes better. So an improved familiar would be exactly the same level as the master's non-improved familiar.
