Boosting Spell DCs

Advice

As my current campaign is slowly moving towards its end, I have started looking ahead to what I may play next. I haven't played a full caster in a long time so I'm strongly considering that route. I don't like it when my spells fail so I've been looking at ways to get my spell DCs way up.

I put together an enchanter build. A Kitsune Fey-blooded enchanter can get an extra +7 to compulsion spell DCs by level 16. That's huge!

I would much prefer to focus on transmutation or necromancy spells, but I can't find anyway to really bump those school spells DCs up. I don't like specializing in enchantment or illusion since so many creatures are immune to them.

Aside from the obvious Spell Focus feats, or going Arcanist for Potent Magic (all of which can be applied to any school), are there any good tricks out there for boosting specific school DCs?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Arcane Bloodline. Usually going Blood Arcanist archetype Arcanist is the best option for this since you get Arcane Resevoir to increase DC's even further and make use of the bloodline's bloodline arcana, which you can't get just from the Bloodline Development arcane exploit.

As for race, that's tricky. Obviously any race that provides a +1 to the DC's of your primary school choice is good, but that isn't all schools. If it's transmutation or necromancy, definitely go gnome with the Utilitarian Magic alternative racial trait or Fell Magic alternative racial trait respectively.

With an 18 in Int (which might require some stat dumps depending on your point buy), and Spell Focus at first (if that's your thing), you have a DC of 11 + 4 Int + 1 Necro/Trans + 1 Spell Focus + 1 Arcane Reservoir = 18! This only gets better when you throw in metamagics, and gets really good when you factor in Potent Magic and your 15th level bloodline boost.

Would starting with a race with a +2 in int basically achieve the same thing but with the boost to all magic not just one school?

Anyway eventually spell perfection is a thing you should get.

Keen Kitsune from Blood of the Beast changes Kitsune to have a racial INT bonus! :)

Focused Spell is great. Particularly when comboed with metamagic reduction and spell perfection. Would definitely recommend using with any spontaneous caster. Persistent spell works similarly though it technically doesn't boost save dc

Elemental Spell is alright if you want to play a blaster

Anything and everything that boosts int

For illusion try Resilient Illusions wizard discovery

Are things that lower saving throws an option or just save dc boosters?

Just looking ahead, but you should also look into ways to bypass spell pen if you particularly hate spells failing

Scarab Sages

Another great option applying penalties to saves. A mesmerist stare, a madness cleric, or even a simple intimidate check will apply a significant penalty to saves.

Grand Lodge

Persistent is a great way to "boost" dcs it is actually the most effective way.

The advice I'm talking about suggested playing a Gnome.

I just want to support gnomes...

But yes, you could. It's probably better even.

I mean
I love Gnomes don't get me wrong :P
I'd just suggest they just make better Sorcs and Oracles so making an OP as heck
So maybe go Necro Oracle or Transmuter Sorcs with gnomes and use their trait to patch the fact they don't have the Arcanist Arcane Res.

Thanks. A few suggestions here I wasn't aware of. I was hoping there was another awesome favored bonus I didn't know about.
