Rise of the Runelords Redux: Recruitment

Oh, this looks good... but I really shouldn't enter another campaign... But Gestalt....

Ah, forget it.

Depending on if I get into some games I've already applied for, I think I'll go with Titan Mauler Barbarian//Vivisectionist Alchemist. In other words, "hitting people with a tree, really, really hard in their spleen." I figure pumping strength to the max, grabbing weapons taller then myself, and hitting people through sneak attack presents something of an amusing mental image.

Seems neat! Is the Aegis class allowed?

There we go. Most of the crunch is done, I just need to add spells, equipment and the personality profile. Have a look see if you like it.

Gear's not quite done, but everything else should be good. Simple and to the point hopefully.

Grand Lodge

Pathfinder Lost Omens, Rulebook Subscriber

I'm currently crafting an albino Tengu Paladin of Shelyn. My hopes are to advance to Sentinel Prestige territory....

Still trying to get things right. Hopefully I will have this in the next day or so.

Here is beastmaster's character, Koran Lashorn. Sorry the background isn't the best, I'm not the best writer.

ugh. hate point buy, even the relatively generous ones like this 25.
I'm always racked by indecision on it.

I'm thinking an arcanist/kineticist. Not much synergy on the stats, but plenty of flexibility

Loup, are you allowing the Psion class from Dreamscarred Press?

If so I might throw a character in after all. Psion/Monk Gestalt.

Full disclosure, I am actively running this campaign.

Okay it's decided, I'm making a Wizard greed sin mage specialist and the other half will be a Blood Arcanist.

Whew! I'm checking in much later than anticipated--I've been on the road today, and we had to spend hours picking up our U-Haul trailer because there was a huge issue with... everything. I'm here now, though.

F. Castor wrote:
Regarding tieflings and aasimars, are heritages allowed? Also regarding those two races, do you allow replacing the spell-like ability with a Variant Tiefling or Aasimar Ability (from the relevant tables)?

Heritages are perfectly fine, and tieflings don't need to spend a feat to do so, either. As far as the tables, I'll allow the more flavorful options, but many (if not all) of the mechanical tradeoffs are incredibly overpowered. If you want one of those, you can roll once.

Ierox wrote:
In the mean time, would you allow the Bladecaster and/or Battle Templar PRCs, if we removed either the casting or initiator progression?

I'll take a look, but if memory serves, I've glanced them over in the past and thought they were okay. I'm not one of the folks who's crazy against PrCs in gestalt, so as long as they seem balanced I'll allow them--but do wait for my comments before setting your heart on it.

Cale Vatay wrote:
Wait no rolling for stats and Prestige classes aren't allowed?

No rolling, no--I love rolling for stats, but in a game like this it could create a huge disparity in power among the PCs, and I'd rather have people on similar ground. As far as Prestige Classes, they're absolutely possible to take; they're only off the table if you decide to use Variant Multiclassing, as I don't want that system mixed with regular multiclassing on top of gestalt. (Way too abusable, even for this power level.)

Teiidae wrote:
for the arcanist I was planning on taking the blood arcanist archetype, is the Aboleth bloodline allowed?

Hmm. I like the flavor they're going for, but it does seem a tad powerful in some ways. I'll try and write up some tweaks for it--mostly clarifying an ability or two and altering things slightly. If I don't post it soonish, feel free to pick my mind about it again, because it might slip through the cracks.

Timeskeeper wrote:
Though that does bring up the question when it comes to the Gestalt rules, do you just stop progressing in one of the two classes and take on the prestige class?

My way of dealing with this conundrum is based on meeting requirements: If you can meet the requirements of a Prestige Class entirely with one "side" of the gestalt, you progress in it alongside another class; if you need both, you lose both. So you could, if you really wanted to, go into (for example) mystic theurge starting at 4th level, but it would take up both of your classes at each level, since you're qualifying for it using both sides of the gestalt. Does that make sense?

JamZilla wrote:
How do you feel about retraining? Specifically ability scores as time goes on.

Retraining can be a fishy prospect. I'm alright with some things with it, but ability scores are a little foundational to swap around later on, at least for my tastes. Certain things might be able to retrain as the game goes on and you have downtime, but ability scores likely won't be on the table.

HedwickTheWorldly wrote:
how out of place would a Fey-related person seem in Sandpoint?

Not really any more than they are in most places; I don't know of a particular hotbed of First World activity in the region, but a good backstory can explain that well enough. I'm tempted to say no because of your following pun, but I'll let it slide this time. As far as the scythe, I don't have a problem with that, and druids are proficient with them, so no issues there.

Zayne Iwatani wrote:
What about half-ogre?

I'm gonna say no to that one, both because it's going to be really hard to rationalize for a few reasons, and because I'm leery of a race that seems so singly built for one purpose. (To destroy the world of men? Maybe.)

Gilthanis wrote:
I re-read your mechanics section and did not see "pregame crafting" rules. Can you please say yay or nay

I'm going to say no on this one; you already have max gold for starting, and I'd rather not have Background Skills turn into a quest for free gear at game start. Feel free to declare any of your gear that makes sense as being self-crafted, but pay full price.

glibness wrote:
Can you take more than one prestige class level at a time? I promise it's for flavor I want to take both Noble Scion and Evangelist on

As mentioned earlier, this depends on how you qualify for a given PrC. If you can make it work where you qualify for one on each side of your levels, yes. If not, no. I should mention, though, that I don't like the Evangelist. I think it was a horrible decision and there's a good reason many people bring out the banhammer.

glibness wrote:
assuming that the Noble Scion class is allowed I get leadership as a bonus feat which I really don't want could I instead take the Anti-Paladin 3rd level ability Aura of Cowardice

I'd want to have more information on the character and build before making a decision there. My gut check is no, but we'll see.

glibness wrote:
Assuming the answer to question 2 is no can I take levels in Antipaladin with the Tyrant Archetype which is used by LE characters.

Yes, that archetype is allowed. I should say that the Antipaladin would be a very suboptimal choice for the campaign, as you'll almost never be in conflict with good characters, but I'm open to someone wowing me with it.

glibness wrote:
Are the performance combat feats allowed? They're the cruix of my PC

They're allowed, but they'd only function in a performance combat, and I don't allow the feat that lets you turn any combat into a performance combat, so... in the kindest way possible, you might want to rethink your build plans, given my comments and answers so far.

That's fine--it's a fun concept, so I'd love to see you pitch it.

Shub-Niggurath's cousin Al wrote:

I'll allow the Aegis and the Soulknife from Dreamscarred Press, but not the other stuff from the Psionics line, and not the archetypes that give those classes psionic "casting". I prefer Paizo's take on psychic magic, and I dislike the power point system in Pathfinder, but the Aegis and Soulknife can be easily reflavored slightly and they do offer some neat options that other classes don't.

Storyteller Shadow wrote:

Just so everyone knows, I don't have issues with players who have knowledge of the campaign. Considering its age, I figure most people are at least somewhat familiar with RotRL, and I'll be changing things up enough to keep it interesting, I hope. If I notice you seem to be using that knowledge to your advantage, in ways that don't fit the game or your character, then I'll say something, but don't do that, and it's no issue!

I know some people have PM'd me and put forward characters--I'll get back to all of that as soon as I can, but especially character commentary might not be done until tomorrow night or later. I'll respond as soon as I can, though, I swear!

@Loup: Sounds fair I will make sure to remind you and we can discuss it in a pm.

Just checking in. I'm still working on my character sheet, but work is swamped this week. I'm building a Warlord (Steelfist Commando) / Monk (MoMS, Scaled Fist). My Warlord levels will transition to levels in the Dragon Fury PrC, if available.

Thank you for the answers. :-)

One more question:

Regarding Campaign traits, do our choices also include the ones found in the "Varisia, Birthplace of Legends" book (Sandpoint Faithful, Thrill Seeker) and/or the ones found in the "Advanced Player's Guide" book (Black Sheep, Favored Son/Daughter, Outlander)?

Loup!! RotRL!! Gestalt!! Whoohoo!!

Seriously, I have tried to play in at least half a dozen Rise games, including a RL one, and they have all failed for one reason or another. So, I would sell the souls of several innocents if it meant I could get in a RotRL game that went the distance.

Might be bit of a dumb question, but in your OP, you said that 'we'll be using gestalt for leveling up' does that mean for level one we're single class, and then 2+ we gestalt?

Either way, I will be remaking Dair here as a Stalker/ Harbinger, focusing on being a mobile, quick striking, acrobatic attacker.

Edit: I'm going to submit Dairkal to Storyteller Shadow's Rise, and will submit a different PC(same classes, stalker/harbinger, but I will probably make him a human) for this, as Dairkal is a follower of Desna, and so fits a bit better for that recruitment.

How do you feel about Spheres of Power?
I won't allow it for this game, primarily because I haven't looked at it in-depth. From what I have seen, both of that system and the playtest of Spheres of Might, it strikes me personally as an overly complicated attempt to do something that doesn't truly need doing.* I know many people are familiar with the system and love it, and maybe one day I'll join their ranks, but for right now I'd rather stick to what I know. That said, you did remind me of an option I allow.

Alright, I've got more than enough ideas without it. Current thinking is a Vexing Daredevil Mesmerist / Warlord, though that Warlord may become an Id Rager Bloodrager.

I think I know exactly what I am going to build.

Dervish Defender Warder | Thug Scout Unchained Rogue

An amazing Dexterity/Intelligent build, that has a perfect chassis (Full BAB, Full Saves, 12hd, 8 skill points). Pity that Ponykind doesn't exact fit the feel of the game. I always did want to play a Unicorn with that build.

Sczarni

Oh, temptation... RotRL was the first ever PbP for me, and while it ended really early, got me hooked. I've always wanted to play it ever since, but never got the chance, so that's me! And the gestalt - just icing on the cake!

I have a very particular concept in mind, and I'll get onto it ASAP!

Quick question: Is health also maxed?

Here is my application. Corso mixes brawler and investigator (empiricist) classes. One day, he'll be the King of Vagabonds in Varisia.

I hesitated between investigator (empiricist) and bard (archaeologist). I think both can work for the concept. Please let me know if you have questions or comments.

Question on your feat tax rules
While I understand most of it, is the removal of point blank shot required? This gives a ray using sorcerer a useful bonus to hit and damage. The article says to take weapon focus and specialization, but weapon spec is not availiable to mage types. Maybe allow precise shot to no longer use it as a prereq, but could still be an availiable feat?

Sczarni

This is me checking in with Perspicacious Gao, a thoughtful man on a quest for knowledge and wisdom, of every variety. An exile from Tian Xia, he's currently in Sandpoint attempting to read everything into the Curious Goblin he can get his hands on, and helping the old owner with household affairs and gardening. He's often seen in Ameiko's place, occasionally engaged in discussions about Tian Xia.

He's also been warned by her not to start any more discussions about past military battles, due to said conversations often continuing until the dawn on the next day. Generally a pleasant, if a bit odd conversation partner.

Ruaidhrigh is now updated to comply with the altered feat rules we're using. Should be ready, unless you're looking for more background or I missed something.

I have an idea for a slayer/inquisitor for a monster hunter type setting out to make a name for himself, especially with the 'Monster Hunter' trait.

Varisia being a place for monsters with the likes of goblins, the Sandpoint Devil and other monsters he holding out hope to catch a whiff of adventure and maybe meeting up with some like-minded people wanted to hunt and make a name for themselves.

I'll get the easy stuff up later today, and work on his backstory and motivations over the next few days.

Of the four options I was considering for my more martial half (warder, ranget fighter and swashbuckler) I have decided on fighter

GM Loup Blanc - one last question - what are your thoughts on the Paladin/Druid alignment requirement discrepancy? I'm shooting for a Paladin/Feyspeaker Druid, but one requires LG, and the other Any Neutral. Any chance I could roll with a NG/CG Paladin of Magdh, Ng, or The Lantern King without having to use the trash-bag Grey Paladin archetype?

You could play a NG paladin (or monk) aasimar if you take a certian trait if I remember right
Also an option is the hell knight classes for an LN character

you could always play a Grey Paladin (requirement is NG)

On another note. How would you feel about a Half-Elf Gunslinger (Bolt Ace)/Magus (Eldritch Archer)? seems like it isn't super hard to work into the world (no issue that is the complications of guns)

I'd be very interested in this.

I'm looking at making a Changeling, either a local and a daughter of Peg o'Ness, a sea hag that haunts the coastline going north from Sandpoint, or someone from further north in the Land of the Linnorm Kings and daughter of Ulla Jarnrygg, annis hag of the Grungir Forest.

I like the second one better but it's also harder to tie into Sandpoint. The former could just be raised there as Sandpoint is within Peg o'Ness's domain. On the other hand, that would also mean that she'd most likely start calling my character.

Class-wise I'm not sure yet. It'll be half spellcasting, half martial (most likely fighter) but that's about it for now.

I am playing an elf bladebonded kensi magus/fighter (mutagen warrior, maybe eldritch guardian) who learned magic while working as a wizard's bodyguard do you want to maybe tie back stories together?

As I'm shaping the build I'm strongly considering an anti-caster sort of theme on my mystic warrior who wants to learn magic and alchemy to augment his martial prowess (even a little bit of divine via deific obedience)

backstory:
Cale's father was a stage magician for a traveling theater/carnival, (around expert 6, bard 1) his mother worked with them as a medicine woman (adept class, somewhere around Lvl 3 to 5 or so maybe with a level of alchemist) and fortune teller so because of their jobs Cale had always been fascinated with real magic, and because of the stories they would tell he always wanted to be a hero, to have his name go down in legend
Ever since he found that what his father did for a living was mostly fake, he vowed to learn real magic and become the greatest wizard... No... Greatest hero ever known.

He took the first opportunity he could to leave his family after that point, signing up to be a bodyguard for a human noble born wizard by the name of Rin, learning what he could from her and her assistants to make him a better guard and (eventually) assistant to her.

He left the mage in good standing for the religious festival and was told that he could have his old job back if he wanted it and if he was still alive next time they saw each other, but he doesn't expect to have to take her up on this

quirks
he taps his fingers together when excited,
he waves his arms a bit when he talks sometimes
he paces back and forth and talks to himself when thinking hard on something in particular
he frequently flips a coin when bored

How are we handling FCB? Do we get both, gotta pick one and stick with it, pick one each level?

Also, max HP for first level?

GM Loup Blanc,

I am working on a Goliath Druid/Brawler and want to ask if one choice is a possibility.

With Goliath Druid, Nature's Bond gets altered to

Primal Bond (Ex):

When a goliath druid forms a nature bond, if she selects a cleric domain, she must selected from the Animal, Destruction, or Strength domains, or the Ferocity, Growth, or Rage subdomains.

Could I choose the Persistence Inquisition? The idea would be that I would belong to a group that hunts down and infiltrates giant groups that are out of balance with nature. I feel the general idea of this inquisition could work with this concept but I think it would have to be your call if it would be acceptable.

Persistence Inquisition:

Your deity chose you for your persistence. You have vowed to pursue the enemies of the faith to the world’s end if necessary.

Bonus: You receive Step Up as a bonus feat.

Granted Powers:

Relentless Footing (Ex): As a swift action, you can add 10 feet to your land speed. This increase counts as an enhancement bonus, and it affects your jumping distance as normal for increased speed. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Wisdom bonus (minimum 1).

Inner Strength (Su): At 6th level, once per day, you may heal yourself as a swift action, healing 1d6 hit points for every two inquisitor levels you possess. When you use this ability, you can also remove one of the following conditions from yourself: blinded, confused, dazzled, deafened, frightened, nauseated, shaken, sickened, or staggered.

Looks very interesting Loup!

GM Loup Blanc wrote:
Alignment: At risk of causing a big debate (please, please for the love of the gods don't start one in this thread), no alignments within one step of Chaotic Evil.

Fine I'll keep it short...

My thoughts on the Alignment issue and proposed fixes:

Just Kidding! :P

With all that finally out of the way, my thoughts. For my character, I like how you are offering some interesting 3pp materials so I might try and build something around those. I had just done my first read through of PoW a week ago and I quite liked what I saw, so I plan on trying to read more of that and come to an idea with those.
First idea is to go with a PoW character to pick up a Stance and then pair that with a MoMS Monk using the Fuse Styles feat, then, as I level up, take advantage of the monks ability to have multiple styles and a stance up at the same time :3
A question on PoW. If I have 2 PoW clases gestalted together, how do I handle Maneuvers Known and Readied? Say I was a Warlord (6 known, 4 readied) gestalted with a Zelot (5 known, 3 readied);
1: do I know a total of 11 maneuvers, which I could ready any of them on either side, and have a total of 7 maneuvers readied? Or;
2: are they both independant of each other, 2 seperate 'pools' that dont interact.
3: if they are seperate, could you select the same dicipline on both sides and then ready the same maneuver twice, once on each side?

I figure that would be good to know before I really decide on what I am going to go :)

Aside from that, I am also investigating the possibility of going Oracle with the Foretold Curse and the Hunters Blood trait to really play up the concept of a prophesized hero, kind of like Harry Potter. Maybe combine it with the Vigilantie and the Renown talent to complete the effect.
As for his personality, he might either embrace his destiny, his own ego fed by the praises he hears, or he might scorn it :P

However, the Foretold Curse is 3PP so I have to ask you about it.

Foretold wrote:

Your life fulfills the predictions of one or more important prophesies. You may choose to embrace, or resist, your foretold fate.

Effect
Subtract your curse level from the DC of gather information or Knowledge checks to learn things about you. You suffer a-10 penalty to Will saves versus non-mind-affecting spells and spell-like abilities of the divination school. Once per day, you can “take 10” on a check even you would not normally be able to do so because of distractions or threats.

At 5th level, add either augury or enthrall (your choice) to your spells known.

At 10th level, you gain a bonus revelation.

At 15th level, add screen to your spells known.

Last idea I have is to create some sort of full caster and look into the Wordcasting set of rules :)

I have not used them before and it might be fun ^_^

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Hi, GM-JZ here with the first pass of my submission.

This is Deiniol (Di-Nee-ol) Sylvir. I have not worked out the mechanics because I always start with a concept I find interesting and work out the nuts and bolts from there.

I know he will be an elven Psychic Detective/Magus (maybe Hexcrafter, maybe Kensai maybe even Bladebound if i can refluff the black blade as some kind of manifestation of his psychic powers.)

Anyway, this is a pretty long submission, I think I got too carried away!

Backsory (quite long!):

Deiniol entered the shop, taking in the smell of sawdust and oiled wood. He moved with a languidness that looked aloof, as if he were simply on an afternoon stroll instead of a scene of horror. His keen, deep-seated eyes immediately perceived that the man in the centre of the shop was hanging from a hook, probably used to hang some of the heavier tools or even as housing for a pulley system.

Mr Bradbury led him passed the slightly swaying man to the counter at the rear of the shop where a sales ledger lay open.

I’m sorry the body is still here Mr Sylvir, I’m told the guards will be removing it shortly. Could have at least taken him down… the man grumbled.

Bradbury was the owner of the shop next door and some distant relation to the deceased. The pace of life was always fast in Magnimar, and where death was involved, life moved all the quicker. Bradbury was interested in the will. Or more importantly, the lack of one.

Deiniol had been hired to unravel the legal threads that lead to the rightful owner of this newly vacated property with it’s prime dockside location.

Indeed they could. Deiniol said, idly scratching his long nose and flipping through pages in the ledger. For the past six months every page of them told the same story, a great increase in sales of prow carvings and figureheads. Apparently the man had some skill with a chisel and plane. But had they done so we may never have realised the man was murdered.

Bradbury reacted as if punched in the chest, his face turning a sickly white.

Murdered!? The man is hanging from the ceiling! he exclaimed irritatingly pointing out the obvious; but neglecting what, to Deiniol at least, was equally self-evident. How can you possibly say he was murdered?

His shoes. Deiniol replied, stifling a yawn.

His shoes!? Bradbury repeated; again, quite irritatingly.

Deiniol brightened at this point. Before him was a puzzle, a disappointingly simple one, but a puzzle nonetheless and his mind has always stagnated when inactive.

Indeed. The man was a carpenter was he not? he doesn’t wait for the response. Cast your eyes to his shoes good man. Can you see they are freshly blackened and polished?

Bradbury nods dumbly and shrugs as if to say so what?

There are few men I can conceive of who would find it prudent to freshly polish his shoes before he took his own life. the investigator snaps impatiently. Also, regard the newspaper there. A few sheets of the Tribune lay in a heap a few feet from the body and Deiniol strode to retrieve it. He holds the first sheet up to the bright sunshine streaming in through the window so that the parchment is almost transparent.

Here! he indicates a series of small impressions on either side of the page, both left and right. Do you know what those are? Fingernail marks and…-

Suddenly there is a flash of light, as if there were lightning in the windows that somehow were brighter than the afternoon sun. Somewhere in that lightning were a ghost, or at least that’s what Deiniol thought it was in the instant of its occurrence. The ghost was a man, standing clutching the pages of the newspaper, shouting, cursing though Deiniol heard no words.

What followed was a headache the like of which he had never experienced before or since that very first episode as he came to call them.

His trembling hand raises to his face, forefinger and thumb pinching the bridge of his nose.

...The man…. was reading this paper in what I might only describe as a h-heightened state of emotion. he struggles. Not surprising, given the first page article describes a major ship-building contract being awarded to what must be a rival company – Freebooter construction.

As the headache passes, Deiniol begins to regain his composure and his rhythm, thinking it were just a passing fugue, caused by fatigue or over-work.

Plainly, this man, this rather successful man, was about to set off for a meeting with said company and somebody decided they would rather not allow that session to take place. I’m sure a very public disagreement over the validity of that business deal would be rather perturbing for all involved. Besides which if he had hanged himself the bruising around his neck would be high under the chin and not low around the apple of the throat.

Another vision explodes behind his eyes. The flash of lightning again, then phantoms in the mists of his own mind. The hanging man, stood with newspaper in hand, a dark figure behind him. And then a strip of leather around the man’s throat, a struggle, a fight. He could feel his own throat closing, the air trapped in his lungs and no more able to flow. Suddenly he was light-headed and he feared he were about to faint.

Steadying himself by placing a hand on the table beside him he manages; He was ch… choked. He was murdered.

Bradbury stands and looks at the man with stunned silence.

Sweat had broken out on his forehead now and his hands too were slick with it. Whatever was happening was more than frightening.

Quite an appropriate response, Mr Bradbury I’m sure. he adds, blinking away the last of the fog that shrouded his vision. Now unfortunately for you, the fact that this case has now become a murder means that this man’s holdings are frozen until that investigation is concluded to a satisfactory outcome. I wouldn’t plan on redecorating this shop for some time. Rather, I’d prepare for a visit from the Guard. he struggles to maintain his decorum but rather attempts to conclude the meeting as quickly as possible.

Now, you hired me to unravel the legalities of this situation which I have. I believe that now belongs to me. he weaves an intricate pattern in the air with thumb and forefinger and the small money pouch laced on Bradbury’s belt floats up and toward his outstretched hand.

B…but…. Who killed him? Bradbury stutters.
Deiniol had already turned and taken several long strides toward the door. He was dressed in a long cotton coat over a leather jerkin, a satchel slung over one shoulder. He slumps against the doorframe, fearing that he might fall down without it. Tapping out some tobacco into a long, thin pipe he lights the bulb and turns at the question, but rather answering with one of his own.

Well isn’t that also obvious? The empirical facts are there to be read Mr Bradbury and as much as I would like to interpret them for you, alas, that was not the purpose for which you hired me. he looks at the man’s plain face through bloodshot, sunken eyes. He feels as though he has aged ten years in the last few moments. I bid you good day sir.

Without another word he strides from the shop and breathes in the air of the Bazaar of Sails. He weighed the coins in his hands and felt satisfied, though despite the easy money, the puzzle had been interrupted by something far more disturbing.

Nevertheless, this too was a puzzle of sorts, which was just as well. Deiniol thrived on puzzles. He lived for them and he would get to the bottom of this one as well, beginning by consulting the only person he knew with a greater intellect than his own - his mother.

Anevia Sylvir was well known in Magnimar. For more than 20 years she had been responsible for orchestrating some of the greatest magic demonstrations to be held at the Serpent’s Run, Magnimar’s illustrious arena.

Under her tuition Deiniol had honed his intellect like a blade, practicing the arcane arts with as much diligence and fervor as he did with the gentlemanly art of fencing. His father had died some years past of a blood sickness but despite the fact they were fourth generation Forlorn - elves raised and living in human civilisation - they had never lost the innate sensibilities of their kin, moulded into attitudes that humans often thought of as ‘aloof’ or arrogant.’ In truth, he and his mother simply knew they were possessed of mental faculties that put them in the vast minority and she encouraged him in exercising his talents through investigation services.

For years they studied Deiniol’s ‘episodes.’ Over and over they would try to recreate the conditions of that first instance. Occasionally he would receive that flash of light, that headache and be able to tell her something he could not possibly know about the owner of a monocle or a cane or a pair of shoes. The phenomenon fascinated them both but Anevia - with all her years of experience and expertise could not explain it.

But look around Magnimar, Deiniol. she said one day. The Irespan for example. There are relics all around us of a power beyond all memory. The Thassilonians were possessed of knowledge the like of which we can no longer even conceive. If the answer to your quandary cannot be found in modern understanding of the arcane, perhaps you can learn from those ancient mages?

From that day on Deiniol dedicated his studies to ancient Thassilonia, teaching himself the archaic tongue and consuming every scrap of information he could find. But after years of study he came to the conclusion that he could only learn so much from mere books and that more practical study were required.

He travelled Varisia extensively from that point until he found himself happening upon the small town of Sandpoint, a quaint but backward place. He had heard rumours of a Thassilonian lighthouse named - aptly enough - the Old Light. Sadly his funds were running low. But one thing his long-lived people had was the luxury of time, even if the visions and flashes of insight were becoming more frequent and more disturbing. Nevertheless, with the Swallowtail Festival about to begin, perhaps there may be opportunities for a man with his talents to replenish some coin and continue his endeavour.

Personality:
Deiniol is very often the most intelligent person in the room and is not shy at remarking so. He is outspoken, brilliant, charming and infuriating. When he is taken by an intellectual problem, he is a fiend of activity but when boredom, or his more frequent ‘episodes’ strike he is as aggravating as he is belligerent.

Among a party, Deiniol will be at times aggravating and annoying but his logic, knowledge and arcane and martial skill will certainly be useful. He will be highly respectful of other intelligence or wisdom-based classes, considering them peers that he will engage with and share opinion and debate.

Physical:

As described by his one-time investigative mentor; Barnabous Snipe.

Even the casual observer is struck by his personage. In height he is rather over six feet, and so excessively lean that he seems to be considerably taller even than that. His eyes are always sharp and piercing, sometimes alarmingly so, except during those periods where he suffers such debilitating headaches that he is sent spiralling into a self-destructive torpor. And yet to come out of it with such insight is something remarkable to behold. His thin, hawk-like nose gives his whole expression an air of alertness and decision and his chin, too, has the prominence and squareness which mark the man of great determination. His hands are invariably blotted with ink as he feverishly scribbles in his spellbook and yet he is possessed of extraordinary delicacy of touch, as I frequently had occasion to observe when I watched him manipulating the most fragile of documents or when he maneuvered his rapier as skillfully as he did the quill.

Party role:

Deiniol is a well-rounded character. Primarily he serves the function of a striker - using his magus spell combat and eventually studied combat to fight effectively but not in a prolonged combat because his hit points would not sustain it. He has an excellent array of skills including ‘face’ skills and knowledges.

In terms of spell selection, his psychic detective spells will almost exclusively be ‘interesting’ or flavoursome spells that link to his ‘episodes’ - flashes of insight that he can get either from spells themselves or by utilising occult skill unlocks such as phrenology or aura reading.

His motivation is to better understand the ancient magics of Thassilonia and whether they can explain what he has come to think of as his mental illness - a concept that terrifies him given his reliance on his superior intellect. I appreciate ancient Thassilonian magic wouldn’t be retooled to be psychic in nature but it seemed like such a good fit that I went with it and besides, Deiniol wouldn’t know either way!

Thank you for getting to the end of that overlong submission. If you have any questions please let me know.

One thing that is called out in PoW is that if you multiclass with two classes that share a discipline, you can't know/ready the same maneuver twice. I would assume it's the same for gestalt, especially since 1) you recover all your expanded maneuvers after an encounter, and 2) each class has a method to recover a limited number of maneuvers during combat.

Actually, what I would really like to create is an Iaijutsu Striking warrior, someone who starts with his blade sheathed and then draws and strikes with his blade in a flash, only to instantly sheathe it again :)
I think I should be able to create something like this using PoW and the Mithral Current Dicipline, however it will probably be very feat intensive :3
I will have to see what I can do to make if work ^_^

Btw, thank you Monkeygod.

With all that finally out of the way, my thoughts. For my character, I like how you are offering some interesting 3pp materials so I might try and build something around those. I had just done my first read through of PoW a week ago and I quite liked what I saw, so I plan on trying to read more of that and come to an idea with those...

A question on PoW. If I have 2 PoW clases gestalted together, how do I handle Maneuvers Known and Readied? Say I was a Warlord (6 known, 4 readied) gestalted with a Zelot (5 known, 3 readied);
1: do I know a total of 11 maneuvers, which I could ready any of them on either side, and have a total of 7 maneuvers readied? Or;
2: are they both independant of each other, 2 seperate 'pools' that dont interact.
3: if they are seperate, could you select the same dicipline on both sides and then ready the same maneuver twice, once on each side?

If maneuvers work anything like spellcasting, you'd be using option 2 and the answer to 3 would be 'no' for the reasons Monkeygod gave above. Gestalting two PoW classes gets pretty weird.

Regarding your monk idea, you can always have a stance and a style (or many styles, if you have the option) up at the same time. All Fuse Styles does is make the action economy a little kinder.

Regarding your Iaijutsu idea, I recommend taking a look at the Combat Stamina options for Vital Strike and Devastating Strike. They add some things that would be pretty useful for an Iaijutsu-based character.

Hi, GM-JZ here with the first pass of my submission.

Anyway, this is a pretty long submission, I think I got too carried away!

I've been putting off watching the BBC Sherlock for years, why'd you have to make me scratch that itch! You despicably brilliant person.

Or, as Gao would put it - "One quick quill can move more people than a hundred quick ships."

Backstory and crunch of the dispenser of wisdom and fists is up! I'm pretty sure RotRL isn't as Tian-heavy as Jade Regent, but I don't think a monk of the mystical persuasion would be too lost there.

Kensai has some Iaijutsu-themed features.

you could always play a Grey Paladin (requirement is NG)

This amuses me.

lol didn't even notice that. Unfortunately there isn't RAW

I found the trait that I thought worked for this. First off you need to not only be aasimar, but also Idyllkin, and further, I was wrong, as written it only works for monk. Maybe you could get this to work with DM permission

I'd absolutely take a trait for it. I'd even play an Aasimar (a race that I dislike because they seem cheesy) if that's what it took! Though Angel-kin or Azata-kin seem like better fits than Idyll-kin, if I had my druthers.

Currently reading through PoW to re-familiarize myself with the classes, as my last GM allowed the partial initiating archetypes but not full initiators. For now I'm thinking Aegis/Warder to be the ultimate meatshield, and possibly Aberrant Aegis/Fiendbound Marauder for WRASSLIN EVERYTHING.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to drop out. Turns out I'm going to be a lot busier than I expected for the forseeable future. Beard-Fu will have to make an appearance later.

This looks like a game that will be an initiators dream. At least 2/3rds of the suggestions have been from POW.

I think that my plan is going to be to go for a Human Stalker/MoMS Monk.
I will then go for some combination of these;
Quick Draw and Improved Quick draw let me do the actual Iaijutsu strikes (albet they are not particularly strong)
Stalker class gives me a good, Wis based Iniatiator class. The Monk complements it quite nicely. Since I will be using a weapon the Flurry of Blows feature is wasted but I am trading that out for MoMS anyways. Even then, some of the Maneuvers i get (like Thrashing Dragon) require me to have 2 weapons, and an off-handed Unarmed Strike will be useful then (and stack on a free Stunning Fist >:) ), plus its a decent backup if I ever get disarmed.
Problem is somehow fitting TWF in there as well...

Anyways, I can go Str based as that is the most simple or I can take the Killer’s Implements Stalker Art to gain Dex to Hit and Damage, but only for that 1 weapon (and not my fists also).

MoMS gives me access to a preresiquite-free style feat, then another one at lvl 2, and PoW gives us many fun looking styles to play around with so I will have to look at those. At lvl 3 I can take an additional style with my normal feat and combine them.

[B]GM. Would you allow me to take the Mithral Current disipline with the Stalker class? It wont be that useful immediately but I would like to focus on it as I leveled up :)

DM: question
Given that armor proficiency is a feat, would class given armor proficiency count as a feat?
I was considering taking the eldritch guardian archetype for paladin but if I can't get my animal some armor, then it's much too fragile
