[Community Project] Wayfinder #18 Call for Submissions

Community Use Projects

23 people marked this as a favorite.

As we previously announced, Wayfinder is now going to be an annual issue, released for PaizoCon each year. Therefore, Wayfinder #18 is slated for a May 2018 release.

Alright! Back to themed issues. This one is a theme that has been requested for quite a while, and we think it’s time…..Fey and the First World!

Goal
The goal for the fanzine is to create a collection of fan-created articles and supporting art set in Paizo’s Pathfinder Campaign Setting world of Golarion.

The theme for Wayfinder #18 will be Fey and the First World! Please use the Inner Sea World Guide as your main reference, along with Pathfinder Campaign Setting: The First World, Realm of the Fey; Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Fey Revisited; Legacy of the First World, and “The First World” in AP #36 Sound of a Thousand Screams (as well as the handy-dandy PathfinderWiki and the Archives of Nethys)!

Preference will be given to articles that follow the issue’s theme. Writers are invited to submit articles that fit within the following categories:

  • Advice: Share valuable information or experiences with new GMs or players in the world of Golarion. Submission size: 750 words.
  • Bestiary: New creatures to terrorize your PCs! Each creature counts as a separate submission. Submission size: 750 words per creature. However, because multiple creatures are combined to form a single bestiary article, smaller entries will be considered as long as they are complete. (i.e., a hard target word count of 750 words does not apply to bestiary entries. See the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary for examples of proper formatting and content.)
  • Fiction: Wayfinder now accepts fiction submissions directly from the public. Joining a writer’s group to help with editing and development is still highly recommended. Submission size: either 750 or 1,500 words.
  • Flavor Articles: People, organizations, events, poetry, or other aspects of life in the Pathfinder Campaign Setting. These articles should build on the material already available in other sources. Flavor articles may include some rules material, such as item, location, or spell stat blocks, if necessary. Submission Size: 750 or 1,500 words.
  • Golarion Gazetteer: Expand and explore places or towns on the Inner Sea maps that have little to no information about them in the campaign setting literature. If applicable, you may submit up to a 1/2-page map of your chosen locale. Submission size: 1,500 words.
  • Of Chance and Skill: Games, new to or adapted for Golarion, to play at your table. Submission size: 750 or 1,500 words.
  • New Rules: Articles devoted to new archetypes, prestige classes, class abilities, feats, spells or magic items for the world of Golarion. Multiple smaller entries (usually feats, spells, or magic items) can be grouped together by a clear theme and submitted as one article. Submission size: 750 or 1,500 words.
  • Realm Building: Pathfinder RPG Ultimate Campaign contains rules for building armies, cities and kingdoms. This column is focused on building upon those rules. Submission size: 1,500 words.
  • Side Trek Seeds: Side trek seeds are short outlines that provide GMs with ideas, either as side treks for a Pathfinder adventure or as mini-adventures involving the fey and First World. Each side trek seed counts as a separate submission. Please refer to earlier issues of Wayfinder for the layout for this article. Submission size: 325 words.
  • Poetry and Song: Music and poetry often define a culture. Share your vision of the best-known songs and poems of the Inner Sea, with special emphasis on the issue’s theme. Submission size: 35 to 50 lines in total.
  • Weal or Woe: Two 7th-level or lower NPCs (including statblocks—one potential ally, one potential adversary. Include hooks for how PCs might meet each NPC and how to use them in a campaign. Include a boon that can come from the Weal character and a drawback from the Woe character. Please reference earlier Wayfinders for the layout for this article, and try to avoid lengthy and complicated stat blocks, as they take up more space than regular text, and can cause problems with layout (i.e., not enough room for art). Submission size: 1,500 words.

Guidelines

  • Thou shalt not disregard canon, thou shalt build upon it.
  • Keep in mind thy audience. Keep it PG-13. No slash fic/porn fantasies, cheesecake/beefcake/fan service. These are prohibited by the Community Use Policy.
  • Short and sweet. Refer to the word count requirements for each type of submission. These are HARD targets, not a range. Articles submitted with word counts more than 5% above or below the target numbers will not be accepted.
  • Limit of up to THREE submissions per person per issue. So, pick your three best ideas!
  • Do not submit an article that relies heavily on another submission, whether the other submission is yours or someone else’s. Any submitted articles that reference (an)other article(s) must be pre-approved by the Editor-in-Chief.
  • Stick to the theme. Articles that do not relate to the fey theme will not be accepted. Articles should feature or be about fey and/or the First World in some aspect.
  • Submissions used to defame, harass, or threaten board members are not tolerated.

Submission Instructions

  • Conditions for Submissions. All authors and artists must agree to have their works reproduced for this and other Wayfinder products, be it for translations into other languages (we will be responsible for the truthfulness of the translations), special publications, or use on a Wayfinder website. All of Wayfinder’s publications are NON-PROFIT, and authors and artists will be given proper credit where due.
  • Send all submissions to: wayfinder.fanzine@gmail.com with the subject line containing “Wayfinder #18 Submission:”, followed by the article title.
  • All text submissions must be submitted in DOC or DOCX format (doesn’t matter if you use Office or OpenOffice). Note: Files sent in RTF, TXT, or any other format than DOC will be rejected.
  • For people who use open-source software, like OpenOffice and LibreOffice, and save their files as .DOC files, there is a mismatch between file types when trying to open the .DOC files in versions of Word from 2013 and up. It results in losing the last few lines of text. Those lines can only be viewed on Word 2010 or earlier. If you use these open-source programs, you MUST put one or two carriage returns after your last paragraph before you save the document as a .DOC file. Otherwise, we will have great difficulty being able to read and edit your submission.
  • Do not use fancy fonts or colors or styles for formatting - these will get stripped out in the editing and layout process. Use the standard body font for the program you’re using - bold and italics are fine. Ask us for an example of our style templates, if you’d like to use that. Tables must be tab delimited (DO NOT USE FORMATTED TABLES).
  • Use standard Pathfinder RPG formats for stat blocks. Familiarize yourself with the style and wording choices used in Paizo products and apply those same style and wording choices to your submissions.
  • At the top of your submission, in the body of the article, provide the following information: article title (and subtitle, if any), author name(s), contact e-mail address(es), and word count of the submission. For example,

Article About Something Cool: Subtitle Would Go Here
    Liz ‘Lilith’ Courts
    Lilithsemail@cooldomain.com
    Word Count: 1,501 words

  • Accepted entries will go through editing passes for clarity and concision. Depending on time constraints, you may or may not receive feedback from the editing process.
  • Failure to follow these instructions or to meet one or more guidelines will result in rejection of the submission.
  • DEADLINE: October 31, 2017, 11:59 Pacific. All entries will be handled on a first come, first serve basis. Some articles may be rejected depending on the final size of the PDF.

Advertising

  • Fan projects operating under Paizo’s Community Use Policy are welcome to advertise their websites and materials.
  • Third party publishers wishing to advertise their Pathfinder Roleplaying Game-compatible projects in Wayfinder #18 are welcome to advertise as well. Space is available for 1/4, 1/2 and full page ads.
  • Email wayfinder.fanzine@gmail.com for questions about placing an ad. Be sure to include “Wayfinder #18 Advertising” in your subject line.
  • RESERVE YOUR AD SPACE BY October 31, 2017
  • ADS MUST BE RECEIVED BY November 30, 2017

Now to think of stuff to submit...

I'll have to see what I can come up with - this topic definitely interests me. ^_^

I already have one ready. Need to look into my second entry.

Oh, finally I can submit all three my pieces.

Sent a powerful NPC, a monster, and two witch archetypes.

A deadline of Halloween seems very appropriate.

I will definitely submit something for this!

A few ideas for this. Gonna be my first RPG submissions ever, slightly nerve-wracking!

Definitely relevant to my interests...gonna have to see what I can come up with.

Some random fey class option ideas that people may take inspiration from;

First World Summoning feat (replace creatures on SM or SNA list with fey, add new First World template to replace celestial or fiendish (DR/cold iron, resistance to ???, summer – fire, winter – cold, spring – electricity + sonic, autumn – acid + negative energy)

A Spritely Tune (bardic masterpieces that emulate fey abilities)

To the Pain – Performance combat dueling

Fey Rage powers (redcap bleed attack, etc. unpredictable movement
allows rager to make an extra 5 ft. step / round that does not provoke AoOs)

Fey Sorcery (adds some druid spells to sorcerer spell list, allowing them to be taken as spells known, or adds one spell of each level as bonus spells known from charm person, invisibility, etc. Can be taken by a druid, ranger, sorcerer, hunter or magus?) illusions, enchantments, polymorph effects, invisibility, +1 DC to charms, polymorphs and glamers

Fey Familiars (mites, sprites, gremlins, etc.)

Fey Trickery (rogue talents)

Feybond Paladin Bond (aura of resistance to illusions, charms and polymorphs) Can seize control of a polymorph effect, charm effect or illusion effect cast on self to turn it into a beneficial effect of the same type of an equal or lower level.

Fey Items
Mask of Disguise (obscures all facial features, so that all wearers have an identical blank white face, effect continues after being removed, can breathe, see, hear and smell, but not speak, eat or drink)

Red Cap (when smeared with blood from a creature you’ve slain within the last minute, you gain favored enemy bonuses vs. that creature type, but also a homicidal loathing of that creature type (will save to avoid attacking them when you have the opportunity) Negated by someone taking the cap from you and spreading 1 con pt. of their own blood on it.)

It doesn't have to be, Andrew! Tips for you, and any other 1st time submitters:

1. Please read the guidelines and submission instructions carefully. Ask questions if you have them.

2. Stick to the theme, and try to incorporate the campaign setting of Golarion (using those product references) in some way. We find that those submissions that successfully weave in Golarion are stronger for it.

3. Hit the word count targets. Those are HARD targets. 750 or 1500. Not 1230. Not 624. The only categories where there is flexibility are Bestiary and Magic Items (more on that in a follow-up post).

4. Do what inspires you. Often we get folks that ask what we want them to write. While most freelance opportunities ARE someone telling you specifically what they want you to write, this is a bit different. We've given you a theme/topic, and a number of article categories, some campaign setting recommendations, and a list of guidelines and instructions on how to submit your ideas. This is YOUR chance to show everyone your stuff. I don't really want to coach you on your submission, because that would be MY design preferences influencing YOUR choices...and that, honestly, comes later, during the development/editing stage. This should be your ideas, not mine, and your submissions should properly reflect YOU, as the potential freelancer and author.

So, final note....if you have questions about any of this, just ask. Either here, or via an email to us. These forums (at least the Wayfinder ones) are helpful and productive during the process.

Good luck!

And because I chose to post this Call after midnight, I forgot to revise the Magic Item rules for submission that we adopted last issue.

Here they are:

Note that we are changing the way we take magic items (up there under New Rules articles).

Now we will take either a full article of magic items that all tie into a central theme (and we'll keep it intact and use it as an article) OR we will take a collection of magic items that adhere to the theme of the issue generally, and will cherry-pick the ones we like from those for use in an article like "Heroes' Hoard" or some market/shop/bazaar article that needs a list of magic items.

If you are just submitting general magic items (and not a tight themed article of them), every 750 words you write counts as 1 submission, OK? If you write only 500, that's OK too, but it counts as 1 submission to your max of 3.

If you are going for the themed collection of items as a complete article, it will definitely need to hit the hard targets of 750 or 1500 words, or it will risk being rejected, or cut apart for single items we like most.

Clear?

Question, then! Am I correct in assuming that something dwelling in, or strongly tied to the First World itself is a better fit for this issue than a fey creature that spends most of its time on Golarion?

Ooh, exciting... I have a bunch of bits that fit this theme!

Not necessarily. The campaign setting books give numerous examples of places in Golarion where there are connections to the First World. Examine the Forestheart rift in the Grungir Forest. Or fey activity in the Embeth Forest. Or in the deep forest near the Junira River, just outside the Thuvian city of Lamasara. Paizo has littered Golarion with these rifts. Those are places I'd love to see examined and expanded on, and read stories set there.

But equally, I'd also like to see articles taking a crack at First World content too. Vendors in the Witchmarket? A side trek in the Riftwood? People and places of interest in Palenhyr, City of Faith?
A story about an encounter with the Lantern King?

SO MANY POSSIBILITIES.

Keep in mind, that if you are looking for people to use your material, most characters aren't traveling to the First World. They are encountering the fey here, likely near one of the many rifts. Or....perhaps they ARE going to the First World....

Had a couple ideas written down for Gazetteer-type articles, which I don't think I've submitted to Wayfinder yet.

We'll see if we can come up with a crunch article too. Set, as always, thanks for the great suggestions. I really appreciate you doing those.

Scarab Sages

Items! Not sure if a re-write of Springheart is ok to submit though.

Will definitely have other stuff.

I have an idea for a Fey themed Golem that really seems promising.

Question!

My son really liked my idea and is putting together some really cool looking art designs for it. Can I just submit the art along with my article and clarify the artist info? Or is there a better way to do it?

We actually use the magazine to also promote up and coming artists as well as authors, so I usually assign it to the pool of volunteer artists. If your son has an online gallery or portfolio of his work, I can take a look....

So, shorter answer: I'd be interested and curious to see what he comes up with...but we give no guarantees that we'll use it.

Not trying to poach submissions from Wayfinder, but if anyone has magic items that don't fit this issue's theme or you've submitted your limit of 3 (like Bardess), maybe drop by the 3rd-Party Freelancers thread and consider submitting them to this open call.

OK. That's cool. So the easiest way to do it is have him put up something on-line then just refer to his web-link on my submission as a possible suggestion?

I'm in the same boat. While I've thought about writing some PF content before, I'm only now thinking very seriously about it.

Wayfinder seems like a good first foray, since I've used material from it for sidequests in the past.

Hey folks,

With PaizoCon behind us and Wayfinder 17 in people's hands (physically and digitally!), plus the Bestiary released, I thought I'd take a moment to remind people that the next issue is open for submissions.

Be sure to read (and follow) the guidelines to maximimize your chances of inclusion. I look forward to seeing everyone's submissions!

Need to finish my second entry...then polish both entry a bit.

Oh, this is a good theme! I'll have to finally come up with something to submit for Wayfinder now.

Extremely minor question: if we're writing a bestiary entry, is it ok for the article title to just be the monster's name? I don't know if it should be more clearly marked as a monster in the email subject line.

Yes. Totally OK.

Be sure to put your name, article title (aka, your monster name), word count, and email address at the top (NOT as a header), as per the guidelines.

Think of it as the same as putting your name on your homework to hand in...no name, no grade!

Nightdrifter wrote:

I'm going to say....no.

Note, this is a FEY / FIRST WORLD issue, not the GNOME issue.

Yes, gnomes are from the First World...but they left, hence stuff like the Bleaching. So, they are related to First World for sure, but really should not be front and center in a fey-themed issue.

Can there be gnomes involved in the articles? Yes, especially if they are interacting with fey or the First World. THAT is the theme, and should be the focus.

(Note....I'm open to a discussion on this though. Not that it'll change my mind, but I'd be interested in your reasoning)

Sovereign Court

Thanks Timitius, was just trying to get a feel for where you wanted to go with the issue :)

I'm not sure if I'm understanding the community use policy right, but is it okay to reference something in a paizo novel? The idea is to give something mentioned in a novel as an example of some new rules. Thanks!

Go to the Community Use Policy list of products

Most of the Pathfinder Tales novels are there, so you can refer to characters and places and stuff. I think you are OK. But be sure to cite the novel as your source. We'll need to add it to our Section 15.

Seriously cool looking. Over 300 pages in that pdf, and it's all fey, baby. I recommend people check it out to get motivated to write something for #18.

Nice!

I still need to start thinking about my submission. Gonna be another last-minute design, with everything that's going on...
