pathfinder academy = kid track?

PaizoCon General Discussion

hiya

I plan on taking a kiddo to the con for the first time, is the pathfinder society academy the recommended or only kid's track for the con? Or am I missing something via the filters and search

Academy is the official session designed specifically for younger players. Beyond that, there is nothing specific that I am aware of, but certain sessions may have an age restriction on them.

My son and I did a couple Pathfinder Academy sessions at a (different) convention last year. Not only was it our first time playing Pathfinder, it was his first time playing any RPG. We both had a great time, and if your child has never played Pathfinder before (or is relatively new) I highly recommend it. If your child knows the rules of Pathfinder already, then it might not be as interesting for them.

Also: you may already know this, but you can sort the events by age group. I'm not sure how old your child is, but you can choose "Family Friendly" and "10+" to see events suitable for younger kids. I noticed there was at least one session of the Mouseguard RPG geared specifically for kids (look for "Heroes of Lockhaven"). My son is 11 and so far we've had no issues with the suitability of the content in the PFS adventures we've done, and all the adults at the tables have been very welcoming of him.

I hope you and your child have a great time at the con!

Pathfinder Society Academy is a series of 15 lessons that introduce the Pathfinder Society to new players. It is written with youth in mind, but accommodates any new player. You start with a 1st level beginner box pregenerated character and play through PSA:Beginners. Then you level the character up to level 3 and run through PSA:Advanced. After that comes PSA:Transitions, where you choose one of several 1st level iconic pregenerated characters, which have more options than the Beginner Box characters. When completed, you have a certificate to make a 2nd level character.

In addition to the lessons, Pathfinder Society Academy has tables that are aimed at youth. Scenarios ran under the PSA aegis are adjusted for age appropriateness. GMs also come to the table prepared to run for younger players.

You are not tied in to completing the "track" and may play a mix of Pathfinder Society, Academy, and other games as you desire.

thanks tonya! that is exactly the kind of info I was hunting for.

is there an equivalent path for the card game?

We don't have anything created specifically for younger people, but we do offer demos for new players, and those who already know how to play can jump right in to regular Pathfinder Society Adventure Card Guild play.
