Briar nods sagely as the Priest confirms that his God is dead.

Like I said. A dead god. Powered by forces unknown. It's curious that belief only can fuel divine magics. Belief=magic.

Briar holds up the holy water and examines it. Briar opens the stopper and takes a sniff with a cocked eyebrow.

"I'm sure they will work great," Briar says as he puts two vials in his efficient quiver. "They will be worth every copper."

Why did we buy 10? Are we drinking it instead of regular water? We should put it in wine flasks and feed it to Charlie...I'd like to see the look on his face.

Barael offers the flasks to Dandi and Briar, while packing away at least two flasks already petitioned in his backpack.

On the trek back to the Citadel, Barael tries to adjust the two flasks of holy water in his belt pouch for a more comfortable saunter.

"So, what did you think of Sadon? He's lifted my spirits more than I can count, and I've never been led wrong on his advice. When he says that Aroden is dead, do you believe him? I mean, they didn't find a body, least I can remember." Barael studies Briar from his side gaze. "You believe in a living god, Nethys, right? So, you're like Sadon. Your belief brings you that power of yours, huh?"

Barael crooks his neck, and addresses Dandi. "What do you make of all this talk of belief and gods? You got yourself a favorite amongst the stars yourself?"

Dandi stores the various flasks away and walks beside Briar and Barael, listening to talk of the gods. "hmm? I'm not sure I know enough of Aroden to say much of him. But there are others. Desna's beautiful, but mysterious, you know. Some people think they know her will, but I'm not so sure. " Here she hesitates, before continuing, "But there are so many gods, so very many, that we can't possibly know them all, can we? I dream of one once, a Prince of Dreams from deep in the Mwangi. Why he would touch someone so far out of his web is a mystery too, but I..." She breaks off and smiles apologetically, "yes, I have a few that I hear calling me. I just don't know why they would bother with one such as me."

Briar smirks.

He seemed perfectly nice for a charlatan.

"Well, yeah...Aroden is dead. When Churches close because most of the clergy can no longer evince the divine spark, it's pretty clear either the god is dead or no longer cares for this realm. Either way, dead is dead."

Briar tenders no gentleness with his words.

Yeah, I believe in a "living" god...how *strange* my ways must seem, my kooky belief in a living god.

"Yes, Nethys lives but it is not my belief that gives me power." Briar swallows a scoff. "No, it is my faith that the agents of Nethys entrust to me. Because I believe means some, that they trust means more."

Briar looks at Barael.

This discussion has been entertaining...I have learned much. This human is not a lost cause. Briar's eyes flicker to Dandi. Lost cause?

"Truly, we shall learn more after our time in the Warrens, yes? We'll see if Aroden's can sanctify water and if Nethys opts to keep me in power. If not, I'll have my bow and you'll have your sword and e shall succeed without the gods aid."

Do not leave me, Nethys.

The Church looked open enough to me... "So you're saying that if we scald some skellies, Aroden can come back from the dead, eh? I like that. Brings me comfort." It makes sense. Magic is simply a god's power given as a gift. Wonder which god favors Nikolay.

"Yes, I look forward to our excursion. And, yes, we shall succeed."
...
Barael smiles at Dandi. "Who are we mortals to know? They have their reasons, is my guess. They wouldn't bother with just anyone." Barael nods in Briar's direction, but winks at Dandi.

I guess I get my power from "The Gods." I'm glad I don't have to engage in this divine pissing warfare that my compadres are. Still, they seem comforted by it. I'm glad I don't have to defend someone who may or may not have my best interests at heart. I think we are here to help each other out. The world is not going to hesitate to rain on your parade, but we can watch out for our friends. Maybe this is weird, but I would rather die because someone wants to help me but can't, rather than dying because someone can help me but won't.

Korvosa's vast graveyard is a mournful place even by day. Alone in the city, this place is quiet and calm in the face of the recent unrest, yet this calm is an unnatural still ness, almost as if it were preparing for a vast influx of new dead. Certainly this ominous feeling is nowhere more noticeable than in the Potter's Ward - the final resting ground for Korvosa's poor and homeless.

Mounds of unmarked dirt stretch far and wide, indicating sites of mass graves, while crumbling mausoleums from years ago, abandoned by their families as the Gray District expanded to the west, dot the bleak landscape, forgotten and empty. Mourners do not visit here, for the dead buried in Potter's Ward leave few behind who regret their passing.

Locating the mausoleum described by Thousand Bones is a relatively simple task. As you approach the site, what do you do?

Male Human (Per +18 | Fort +12 Ref +16 Will +12 | AC 24 (f 19/t 17)| CMD 30/f 25)

Barael lifts the sole of his right foot, and brushes his left leg with the graveyard dirt. He tries as best he can to count the adjacent mausoleums, graves, to understand the possible sources of undead that may arise. Elbow to elbow with an animated skeleton, or corpse, huh? A mockery of life, bestowed by a mage accustomed to dark magicks. Take comfort in the mages who travel with you, and the gods that look after them. The blade is a welcome companion as well. Barael's nerves fail to steady him, and his approach is mediocre.

Barael makes sure that the holy waters are distributed, 2 to Nikolay, 2 on his person, and 6 amongst the other four in the party.

Barael studies the faces of his companions, trying to draw strength from their calm. Glad for the day, at least until we breach the doors, when the earth opens up below us, and invites us deeper. There is nothing welcoming here.

Briar switches to a blunt arrow as he gets near the Dead Warrens, mindful of Cressida's words about skeletons.

Even more mindful of the Whispers in his MindsDark, Briar will begin to search for 6 good throwing stones.

Barael's blundering did muss some tracks, but a few are still visible. You find evidence of a man's tracks and a wheelbarrow trail. More interestingly, several smaller humanoid tracks, each bearing only four toes, clutter the site as well.

Your perception check reveals a poorly hidden secret door with muddy tracks leading up to it in the floor of the mausoleum. Clearly someone took some time at one point in the distant past to create a secret passage here, but time and recent frequent use have worn it to visibility.

Knowledge Nature checks please as Briar points out the odd small footprints. Trained only… DC 20.

"Do the undead make noise? Aside from their feet shuffling? Do they moan in far off corridors, so we can identify 'em?" Barael whispers to anyone who might answer him.

These warrens are dimly lit by patches of eerily glowing mold, filling the chambers here with a cold blue light. The light from Fondo's belt though is enough for everyone to see clearly close up. The air is musty and damp, with the stink of rotting flesh always present in the background. The entry chamber and stairs are of ancient Shoanti construction.

You enter into a large room supported by four wide pillars of stone. The ceiling above arches in a dome nearly twenty feet high. Majenko flies up there seemingly trying to get away from the smell. The walls are lined with skeletons caked into the mud - human bones mostly, but here and there smaller bones might be from halflings, or perhaps children.

Fifteen-foot square pits sit to the east and west, each filled with a large heap of hundreds of bones. To the south a crude hole has been gouged into the wall providing access to a tunnel.

While the skeletons are wearing bits and pieces of broken armor, they are wielding no weapons other than their claws and teeth - or beak in the case of the owlbear.

Briar smirks as the holy water proves to be holy.

That's nice and all, but let's see how Nethys' magic compares.

Briar will pull out 3 of the throwing stones that he found earlier and cast Magic Stone upon them.

Not sure what will be left after Dandilion goes before Nikolay, but this should cover it.

Slashed by the skeletons, Nikolay considers whether or not the exchange of taking out a skeleton was worth not getting his shield spell up. Considering he's not up against the owl bear, he considers it a fair trade and does the same thing, but in the opposite order. First he slashes at S4 and then takes a 5' step back to G-9. Then he fires a ray at a remaining skeleton without cover or in melee (S3?).

Barael hears Fondo bellow, and steps up to fill the opening created by his retreat. Move to G-13

Feeling the need to free his hand, Barael drops the gleaming rapier to the ground. Sorry! Barael then tries his might against the monstrosity with his naked fist.

Dandilion hits the owlbear with a bomb for 8hp. Nikolay swings at S4 killing him and then hits S3 also taking him out! Briar makes some pebbles into magical stones. Fondo swings and connects for 6hp damage before backing up. Charlie delays until after Fondo to heal him for 4hp and then also backs up. Barael steps up to the owlbear as well and finishes him with a critical hit scattering bones everywhere!

Meanwhile, Majenko continues to taunt the skeletons, and remains out of reach. He does comment that he sees a Guard, dead, near the entrance to the tunnel systems. Looks like he died in the last day or so to skeleton attacks.

Then at the top of the order the skeletons, what's left of them, strike back with full vigor.

One slash to me and two more of them down. A fair trade.
