Possessed options

So there are several class options involving possession (A sorcerer bloodline, archetypes for both shaman and oracle, and even a trait). These usually involve some sort of skill and/or mind affecting save bonus, and are always called out as "spirits".

However, this doesn't seem to really mesh with how the actual possession spell works.

So how does one reconcile these disparities? What are all these spirits? Almost all entities capable of casting/using possession are fairly high level, so what reasons might there be for them to possess something and yet not use their power?

Just trying to work it out in my head how to best roleplay it. I'm building a True Silvered Throne/Possessed shaman. My background is that he was a leader in the Esoteric Order of the Palentine Eye, but fell to diabolism after he was possessed by a devil after reading some ancient tome or something of that sort (according to Carrion Crown it's apparently common for that sort of thing to happen).
